MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
We are all excited to get the contest underway. This whole time we have been mentally preparing for the contest. Today we took the time to talk out loud about our goals and we believe in each other to support us reaching our goals.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
Talk about a test. Today so much food was brought in from Dave and Busters. They brought ribs, pretzels, cookies and filled our green room full of goodies. One of our teammates Nick ate a cookie. The willpower the rest of us showed was at such a high level of commitment.

ASK A TOP DOC: IS THERE A FAST FIX FOR POST-NASAL DRIP?

Answer from Michael Cirigliano, associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

Posted by Jenna Bergen on 9/26/2010 at 5:00AM | No Comments

“Whether you have allergies, a sinus infection, or chronic congestion and a runny nose from the common cold, the best way to treat the ever-annoying post-nasal drip is with a prescribed nasal steroid, like Flonase. Unlike steroids that body builders use, this is a topical steroid that you spray into the nasal passageway. It reduces the inflammation in the nasal passages, allows drainage if you’re congested, and, most importantly, decreases the amount of mucus—aka snot—you’re producing. Two puffs per nostril every evening should do the trick. Just make sure you don’t use over-the-counter nasal decongestants like Afrin for more than three days at a time, as they can damage the lining of the nose and lead to chronic congestion.  Never take an antihistamine unless you are sure your symptoms are due to allergies— it could make your mucus thicker.”

FROM THE MAGAZINE: IN THE RACE

Fall is Philly’s peak 5K season. Here’s a cheat sheet for running (and loving!) your first

1. Score the right sneaks
“The only gear you really need is one good pair of running shoes,” says Tony Van Dyke, president of Bryn Mawr Running Club. “Get fitted at a specialty running store. Poor-fitting shoes can cause painful blisters and broken toenails—and the last thing a beginner needs is another excuse to miss a run.”

2. Be social
“Running with a friend or group gives you accountability—you’ll be less likely to blow off a workout,” says Ross Martinson, co-owner of Philadelphia Runner. Lululemon organizes jogs for yogi runners; Fishtown Beer Runners share microbrews after their workouts.

3. Change Is Good
Van Dyke recommends doing three half-hour runs per week, and says, “Have fun with your workouts: Explore. Try running through a different neighborhood and checking out the houses, taking a new route through the city, or jogging through your town’s business district—see what’s out there.”

SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE FOR 2010 PHILADELPHIA MARATHON!

And the half, too! All you gotta do is raise money for a good cause

Posted by Jenna Bergen on 9/23/2010 at 10:50AM | No Comments

November’s Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon is now full, and if you’re one of the many Philly runners who are totally bummed out that you didn’t register in time — like BWP reader Kelly, who recently left us the comment, “Help! I missed the registration for Philly’s half marathon. This was the first half I planned to do and am currently training for. Can I just show up and run along without being registered? I really don’t want all this training to be for nothing!” — we have some good news …

There are still spots left! And you don’t have to sell your favorite running sneaks, buy a spot on the black market or get tackled by a police officer for running illegally on race day. All ya gotta do is raise money for a good cause. READ MORE
