My co-editor, Christine Speer, and I had a lot of fun putting together this roundup of amazing fitness instructors for our February feature, “Welcome to Fitadelphia.” Of course, we could only fit 10 in the magazine, and the city is filled with great instructors! Tell us who’s your favorite cheer leader and why they’re the best in the comments below.

YOGA CLASSES! RUNNING CLUBS! HEALTHY LUNCH SPOTS!Why I heart the February issuePosted by
Jenna Bergen on 1/28/2011 at 10:41AM | 1 Comment
When I look at the February issue of Philly Mag, I feel proud, thrilled and excited all at the same time. Why? Because fitness, a topic that has been overlooked and ignored in our lovely city for far, far too long, made the cover. And not just in the form of a little, throwaway coverline—the beautiful, strong, impossibly long-limbed Katelyn Prominski from the Pennsylvania Ballet is smack-dab on the front. There is a wellness revolution happening in and around our city, and the feature story, “Welcome to Fitadelphia (No, Seriously),” covers all that’s been developing: An enthusiastic, dedicated running community; nearly uncountable yoga and Pilates classes; more and more healthy food options; scores of fun dance classes; some of the best, life-changing instructors; and more. Sure, we have a long way to go to get our city healthy, but the seeds of fitness have been planted and have definitely taken root. I cannot wait to see the healthy changes our city makes in the years to come, but, for now, I just want you to enjoy the issue! Go on out there and pick up a copy. Show us you want to read about health and fitness, and we’ll keep putting it out there for you. |

LOVE LESSONS FROM ABU GHRAIBSee local yogi Jennifer Schelter in a one-woman show about her experience with Abu Ghraib prisoners this weekendPosted by

The fact that Jennifer Schelter, owner of Philly’s Yoga Schelter, traveled to Iraq in an attempt to ease the pain of tortured Abu Ghraib detainees through the use of yoga and meditation is surprising in and of itself. The fact that she’s turned her experience into a one-woman show, Love Lessons From Abu Ghraib (which she wrote and will star in at the Adrienne this weekend), is rather unbelievable. In an interview with InterAct Theatre Company, Schelter discussed how the trip came to be, and why the performance helped her deal with the depression she fell into after returning home. READ MORE |
GOD AND SEX: A LOCAL MINISTER’S FAVORITE TOPICSResearch shows that safe sex is good for you—but should it be talked about at church? This local woman says yesPosted by
Jenna Bergen on 1/26/2011 at 12:23PM | 2 Comments
It’s so rare to hear the words “religion,” “God” and “sex” intermingled in a positive way that I had to give a shout-out to this philly.com piece about Mount Airy’s Beverly Dale, a minister whose two favorite topics are “God and sex.” Though she’s definitely ruffled the feathers of some (she’s even been called the “whore of Satan”), I think that anyone who encourages people to become more comfortable with their bodies and to appreciate, take care of, and treat them with respect, is on the right track. Sex (safe sex, of course!) has been shown to do everything from help you live longer to make you look younger. READ MORE |
THE SOFITEL’S HEALTHY NEW MENUThree courses for under 500 caloriesPosted by

Dieters may soon find solace at the Sofitel. Starting on Tuesday, February 22, the hotel will be offering a lower-calorie menu that will allow diners to enjoy a “decadent and tasteful” three-course meal for under 500 calories. The healthy menu will be available at both the hotel’s restaurant, Chez Colette, and its on-site bistro, Liberté, and will focus on fresh, whole ingredients and local, sustainable produce, meat and seafood. “I’ll be creating simple, visual dishes that appeal to both the eye and the palate, utilizing classic techniques and fresh, seasonal ingredients,” says Kevin Levitt, the Sofitel Philadelphia’s executive chef.
