Get your appetites ready, fellow healthy eaters. Freshii, a Chicago-based chain of healthy fast food joints, opens at the Residences at the Ritz-Carlton today and we can’t wait to try it! The menu is loaded with a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. First, you pick your “style,” choosing from salads, wraps, brown rice bowls or soups. The rest of what goes into your meal is up to you. Pick from a healthy selection of ingredients including edamame, grilled tofu, avocado, mango, spicy peanut sauce, even organic grilled steak. You can check out their website here to see all the options. And while you’re at it, glance over at the nutrition stats conveniently planted on the right side of the page. You can find out how many calories, grams of fat, protein, and/or fiber each ingredient adds as you custom-build your meal from the bottom of the plate up.

The international franchise, with stateside locations in NYC, San Francisco, Nashville and a handful of other cities, serves all of its food off of biodegradable or recyclable materials. Freshii also steers clear of energy-guzzling dishwashers, hoods, ranges and ovens, and strives to purchase food from farms that follow environmentally sustainable practices.  ”Philadelphia is the fifth-largest media market in the U.S., but has surprisingly few healthy eating options compared to many other large cities,” says Sumeet Goel, owner of the franchise rights to Freshii in the Philadelphia area. As many as 30 other Philly locations are in the talks for the future.

Finally, a place in Philly offering fast food that won’t weigh you down, without any of those all-too-common secret, mysterious ingredients or hard-to-find nutrition stats. Now … let’s just hope it tastes good!

Don’t kid yourselves–while some of the ingredients by themselves are healthy, some (for example, the oversize tortillas) pack lots of calories, and the combos can really add up. The spinach and goat cheese breakfast wrap is over 600 calories–FOR BREAKFAST! Sorry, that’s just not “healthy” by my standards. You can do just as well picking veggies and low-fat protein sources (grilled chicken, no teriyaki sauce, etc) at any salad bar or similar stop.

  2. It’s exciting that more healthy places to eat are coming to the Philadelphia area. At Live Well Holistic Health Center (http://www.livewellholistichealth.com) in Ardmore, PA, we’re finding that more and more people are ready to feel great by eating right, exercising more, and making natural choices when it comes to their health (as opposed to immediately turning to prescription drugs and surgeries as a first defense against common ailments such as allergies, asthma, skin rashes, acne, depression, stress, hormone imbalances, digestive issues, and general well being).
