Whether its served straight up or with a twist of lemon or a dash of juice, I simply cannot get enough seltzer. I love the way the bubbles feel on my tongue, and I adore the fact that it doesn’t have a speck of sugar or artificial sweetener. For the past five years or so, my love for the bubbly beverage has been evident in the numerous cans and plastic bottles in my recycling bin. While I knew it wasn’t great for the environment, it kept me from drinking unhealthy diet soda. However, once I moved in with my boyfriend a few months ago, he stopped buying diet soda and began sharing my seltzer. While I was thrilled he wasn’t filling his body with chemicals, the number of bottles and cans in our recycling skyrocketed. We were also spending much more than anyone ever should on H20, even if it did have bubbles. READ MORE

ASK DR. MONTI: DO I HAVE ADULT ADD?Answer from Daniel A. Monti, director of the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and HospitalPosted by

Q: Lately, I feel as though my mind is constantly hopping from one task to the next. Even though I’m “busy” all day at work, I feel like I’m accomplishing little. How can I tell if I have symptoms of adult ADD or if I’m simply over-worked? A: So many variables can affect attention, from high stress and not getting enough sleep to medical issues. If this is a new problem, then the first thing to do is get a checkup from your doctor and make sure you are evaluated for hormonal issues and receive a depression screen, as part of the general medical assessment. SWEAT COMES TO NORTHERN LIBERTIESPosted by

As of Tuesday, March 1, Northern Liberties’ Ironworks will become a Sweat Fitness. As a NoLibs dweller myself, I couldn’t be happier. While the gym has been a great service to the community since it opened its doors 15 years ago, and the Ironworks staff has always been friendly and helpful, the space is in desperate need of a face lift. Sweat plans to outfit the gym with new equipment, as well as add more group fitness classes. Of course, the gym will probably see a lot more traffic from NoLibers who used to make the trek to Sweat’s Old City and Arch Street locations, so always having your pick of treadmills may become a thing of the past. Cook This, Not That, a cookbook brought to you by the Eat This, Not That gurus, shows you how to slash calories in popular chain restaurant dishes by cooking lighter versions at home. Sounds good, but how do the DIY dishes really compare? Yesterday, 6 ABC went into the kitchen with local nutritionist Emma Fogt to find out for themselves. READ MORE |
THE ULTIMATE BROAD STREET TRAINING GUIDEA primer for running Philly’s iconic 10-milerPosted by

Originally published in Be Well Philly’s 2010 supplement. Last year more than 30,000 runners made the pilgrimage to Somerville and Broad for the start of the 31st Annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run (BCBSR), and on May 1, 2011, the race is expected to break history with its second straight sellout. Factor in the thrill of hearing the Rocky theme song roll from the speakers at the mark, the awe-inspiring view of the empty thoroughfare with City Hall beckoning in the distance, and hundreds cheering at the finish, and it’s easy to understand why entrants have nearly doubled since 2007. THE VAMPIRE FACE LIFTA procedure that uses your own blood to fill wrinklesPosted by
Jenna Bergen on 2/23/2011 at 9:30AM | 2 Comments
While anyone looking to turn back the clock has had the option of artificial dermal fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm, for years, there is now a more natural procedure that promises to fill wrinkles and firm sagging skin. Selphyl, also known as the Vampire Face Lift, injects the patient’s own platelets—taken from his or her blood, hence the blood-sucking nickname—back into the skin to regenerate collagen. While it takes up to three to six weeks to see results, many patients seem happy with the final outcome. Check out a clip of Richard Goldfarb, the director of the Center for Smart Lipo in Langhorne, speaking about the pros and cons of the procedure to learn more. ASK DR. MONTI: IS IT SAFE TO DRINK SELTZER?Answer from Daniel A. Monti, director of the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and HospitalPosted by

Question: Is it safe to drink a lot of seltzer? It’s helped me kick my diet soda habit, but even though it’s calorie- and artificial sweetener-free, I’ve heard that carbonation can alter the body’s pH levels and cause health problems. Should I cut down on how much seltzer I drink? Answer: No matter what you call it – seltzer, soda water, sparking water, or carbonated water – this type of beverage is water that contains dissolved CO2 gas. When combined, water reacts with CO2 to create carbonic acid. Carbonation can occur naturally in spring water that picks up carbon dioxide stored in rocks, or it can be infused by the manufacturer. Carbonated water is an increasingly popular beverage, which has led to questions about its safety. READ MORE |
