It’s not just the unfairness of life that lets a chef known for her ice creams and pastries look like Monica Glass: Between tastings, the city’s culinary masters are munching homemade energy bars and broccoli rabe. Here, they offer up their average daily menus so you can toss that Lean Cuisine and eat like a hot chef.

BUILD SPEED DESPITE THE SNOWRunning guru Phil Clark offers tips for upping your pace indoorsPosted by
Jane Morley on 2/16/2011 at 1:45PM | No Comments
Snow. Ice. Freezing rain. Cheek-stinging wind and teeth-chattering temps. These are a few of my least favorite things—and not just because they make me crabby and cranky and a more-nervous-than-usual driver, but because they interfere with my running schedule. Since I registered last month for a mid-March 5K in Haddonfield, I’ve been fiercely determined to set a new personal record, or “PR,” at that distance. For the first time, well, ever, I’m actually committed to doing speedwork, and I’ve got a fancy training schedule packed with technical sounding workouts (7×400 meters at mile pace! 45-minute tempo run!) to help me develop cheetah-like leg turnover. NEW MANNEQUINS AREN’T FAT, THEY’RE REALISTICWhy you should love the skin you're inPosted by

There are multiple reasons that I disagree with the blog, “Fat Mannequins … So Wrong,” written by Philly Post contributor Kelly Rowell. First of all, the entire message of this blog goes against everything I stand for and the message I strive to send on the Be Well Philly blog: Love your body, take care of it as best you can and enjoy it to the fullest. To me, that means fueling it with healthy foods, staying active and accepting the natural shape of your body—not comparing yourself to fake, unhealthy ideals. READ MORE |
A ONCE-A-WEEK WORKOUTThis Limerick gym says 60 minutes per week is all you need to tone up and slim downPosted by

Sixty minutes of weight training per week. That’s what MaxOut, a Limerick-based gym, says is all you need to lose weight and get in shape. (This video, which aired on CBS 3 last night, takes you through the process.) MaxOut credits the success of its workout program to its unique weight-lifting machines, which allow trainers to adjust the weight on both the up and down movement of each lift. “The body can resist a heavier weight than it can lift,” says CEO Dave Schaffer. “And so we’re just now able to capture that and reproduce that.” MaxOut says its 60-minute workout pushes muscles to the max, which is why five to six days of recovery is needed after each sweat session. However, CBS 3 also spoke with a member of the American College of Sports Medicine who said, “There is no way a once-a-week workout could really get people in good shape.” READ MORE |

THE TOP SEVEN BED BUG MISTAKESBed bug infestations in Philadelphia only continue to rise. Here, the common reactions that make an awful problem worsePosted by
Jenna Bergen on 2/14/2011 at 9:27AM | 9 Comments
What’s the first thing people do when they think they have bed bugs? They panic. A natural reaction, considering they’ve been the nighttime dish on a blood-sucking buffet. “The moment you discover bed bugs in your home, it is normal to feel violated, disgusted, and a sense of urgency to get rid of everything you own and get out of your house,” says Jeff Klein, owner of A3 Superior Pest Control in Milford, who’s seen his bed bug clients in the Philadelphia area nearly double in the last six months. “Unfortunately, these steps only worsen the infestation and prolong the length of the bed bug treatment process.” Here, the common mistakes people make when they discover their home has been infiltrated by the bedtime beasts—and why it only makes the shudder-inducing problem worse. BWP GIVEAWAY: WIN A SPINGYM!The take-anywhere device that wipes out arm wigglePosted by
Jenna Bergen on 2/14/2011 at 8:30AM | No Comments
You may have heard of the SpinGym a few years ago, when its creator, actress-turned-exercise-maven Forbes Riley, launched the arm-shaping, yo-yo-esque device on the Discovery series PitchMen in 2009. I, however, hadn’t heard of the celebrity-endorsed flab-fighter (Tori Spelling, William Shatner and cast members of Glee have been reported to use it), and after seeing an ad for it in the upper corner of our Be Well Philly Facebook page, I quickly decided I needed to give it a test run—and to give one away to a BWP reader! After all, summer is only a few months away, and if there’s anything I could do to help all of us arrive at tank-top season feeling even a twinge more confident about our arms, I’m all for it. (Find out how to enter for your chance to win a SpinGym at the end of this post!) READ MORE |

Jenna Bergen on 2/14/2011 at 7:00AM | 2 Comments
I feel as though I’m constantly being bombarded with commercials of Jennifer Hudson professing her love for the Weight Watchers program and, seeing that she’s lost an estimated 80 pounds on the diet plan, I can easily understand why. But, then again, she’s paid to follow it! So when my inbox was flooded with local “after” shots of real-life Philadelphians who have used the program to shed pounds and regain their health and happiness, all while working nine-to-five jobs and chasing after grandkids, I was definitely impressed. DO VIBRATING PLATFORMS REALLY WORK?Not much, experts sayPosted by
Jenna Bergen on 2/11/2011 at 5:13PM | No Comments
According to the New York Times, vibrating platforms are becoming more common in gyms, despite the fact that their claims of increased performance are based on unclear evidence. Basically, researchers believe the shake machines do something, they’re just not sure how they work. They also wager that any benefit they do provide is minimal at best. READ MORE |
