ORGASM STATS: WHAT YOUR LIPS SAY ABOUT YOU

Your fun factor in bed might depend on the shape of your mouth (It's not what you think!)

Posted by admin on 6/30/2011 at 3:20PM | 1 Comment

In the realm of “Who ever came up with the idea to study that?,” scientists at the University of the West of Scotland decided to look into the burning question of whether the shape of a woman’s upper lip—specifically, her “tubercle,” that little indentation in the middle—is correlated with her likelihood of experiencing vaginal orgasms. And—oh my God! OH MY GOD!—it totally is. (Sorry.) To quote from the study, “A prominent and sharply raised lip tubercle was associated with greater odds of ever having a vaginal orgasm, and also with greater past month vaginal orgasm consistency.” Now, go forth and check out the upper lips of every woman you know.

RUNNING: THE UPSIDE OF INJURY

What I love about being sidelined

Posted by Jane Morley on 6/30/2011 at 3:11PM | No Comments

I am grateful not to be one of those runners who are perpetually injured. You know the type: If it’s not a tight IT band, it’s a sore Achilles or a case of shin splints. And when I do get hurt, I’m not the sort of person who “runs through it”; I take note when my body speaks up with an urgent “Ow!” Which is why, since mid-March, I’ve been running a whole lot less than usual, thanks to a bout of patellofemoral pain syndrome (codename: runner’s knee). Log miles for a good cause

Posted by Kathryn Siegel on 6/30/2011 at 9:48AM | 2 Comments

Join the crowd at the Ben Franklin Bridge

Join the American Cancer Society on July 10 for their 39th Annual Bike-A-Thon to raise money for cancer research, advocacy, education, and patient programs and services. So far this year, cancer has taken 28,560 lives in the state of Pennsylvania alone. Help decrease that number (and benefit your own health) with either a 61- or 100-mile route from the Ben Franklin Bridge to Buena Vista, NJ. Join a team or ride as an individual, and choose the amount of cash you are able and willing to raise for the event. Over $850,000 has been raised so far, but of course every penny helps. Thousands of Americans battling cancer will thank you (and so will your quads). – Kathryn Siegel

$135 before July 7 ($160 after), July 10, 6:55 a.m., Ben Franklin Bridge, 1-800-ACS-2345, http://community.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=33704&pg=entry

THIS WEDNESDAY: FREE SELF-DEFENSE SEMINAR

Get fit and learn martial arts moves to protect yourself from potential assailants

Posted by Kathryn Siegel on 6/27/2011 at 11:29AM | No Comments

Learn to kick butt at a free self-defense seminar

Despite Philly’s many bragging points (2008 World Series Champs, the Liberty Bell, and cheesesteaks in order of importance), its still carries the stigma of being one the nation’s top 25 most dangerous cities. While you may not be able to prevent violent crime, you can certainly protect yourself from it. This Wednesday, the Urban Defense Center will offer its final free self-defense seminar at its Northern Liberties facility. By adapting traditional martial arts techniques to modern urban lifestyles, the skilled instructors aim to teach self-awareness, vigilance and protection that can come in handy while strolling a dimly lit neighborhood block. You’ll gain a sense of security and self-confidence during this hour-long session, all while burning serious calories practicing both basic and advanced fighting styles! – Kathryn Siegel

Free, June 29, 7-8 p.m., Urban Defense Center, 725 North 6th Street, 267-974-0287, http://www.phillyurbandefense.com/default.html

JENNA’S GOODBYE POST

I've got a new gig, but that doesn't mean you can stop sweating daily!

Posted by Jenna Bergen on 6/27/2011 at 10:55AM | 4 Comments

Jenna Bergen

To my very dear Be Well readers:

I’m writing with some bittersweet news, my friends: This will be my last post on BeWellPhilly.com, at least for the foreseeable future. No, I haven’t decided to give up my healthy ways for a life filled with potato chips and ice cream (although I will continue to eat both occasionally, because, well, I’d be crazy not to), nor have I decided to join the army (I’m just not that brave). What I have done: Accepted a position at Prevention magazine, where I will continue to cover fitness and do my best to inspire all of us—myself included—to sweat daily. Of course, BeWellPhilly.com, the little blog that I was lucky enough to start only two very short years ago, will continue—so please keep reading it!

This was a tough decision for many reasons, the greatest being that I believe in Philly. I believe that this cheesesteak-eating town is destined to become one of the healthiest cities in our country—if not the healthiest—and I will miss watching it unfold.

It’s been an honor to work with and learn from some of the city’s best health and fitness professionals, and a pleasure to write for you all. Thank you for proving with your interest in BeWellPhilly.com that health and fitness has just as much—if not even more—of a reason to be covered by Philly Mag as politics, shopping, and entertainment. For this, I will always be grateful.

In happiness and health,

Jenna Bergen
