The Checkup: Your Phone Might Be Swimming in Feces

For the love of God, wash your hands!

• Maybe I’m a bit of a germaphobe, but I wash my hands a lot. Why? Because of reports like this, which found that one in six cell phones is contaminated with fecal matter. We’re talking E. coli here, people, the tiny little bug that can make you seriously sick. Researchers are chalking it up to people not washing their hands after they go to the bathroom. The study took place in Britain, but I’m betting we’re in a similar feces-ridden boat here in the States.

• I was on a bit of a marathon-news kick last week and since none of you objected (at least to my face), I bring you this: the story of a 100-year-old marathon finisher, who completed 26.2 in Toronto on Sunday to become the oldest marathon runner ever. Fauja Singh came in dead last, taking more than eight hours to complete the course, but his effort earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. I’d say that’s an achievement.

• Some kids schooled some doctors with a science fair project at the American Academy of Pediatrics annual conference yesterday. Just sayin’.

• And just so you know, every beer or shot of booze you drink costs the American healthcare system—and society at large—approximately $2. That’s if you’re binge drinking. Just, you know, so you know.
