The Checkup: Over 100 Sickened in Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tuna

Hope you laid off the sushi this weekend ...

• A yellowfin tuna product now linked to a salmonella outbreak has sickened 116 people in 20 states and sent a dozen to the hospital so far. The fish comes from California, but most of the cases have been in states along the Eastern Seaboard and in the South, according to the Associated Press. Five cases have been reported in Pennsylvania and seven in New Jersey. The tuna is not available for consumer purchase but is used in sushi and sashimi at restaurants and grocery stores. The manufacturer is voluntarily recalling nearly 60,000 pounds of the stuff. If you’ve eaten sushi recently, note any digestive discomfort, including diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever; these symptoms of salmonella usually pop up within 72 hours of eating contaminated food.
