The Checkup: Paul Ryan Is in Seriously Good Shape

Say what you will about Paul Ryan's politics—but there's no denying that Mitt Romney's running is a stellar fitness role model.

• Not everyone’s super psyched about Mitt Romney’s choice for veep, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about. (You’re welcome.) What I’m most interested in is Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s impressive fitness routine, which includes leading Hill staffers in group P90X sessions. TIME Healthland reports that Ryan, a former personal trainer, is 6’2″ and a lean 163 pounds, with only 6 to 8 percent body fat. Dang! And although I don’t know for a fact what his schedule’s like, I’m willing to bet it’s nothing short of hectic, so it’s pretty darn commendable that he’s able to prioritize personal fitness to such a degree. Oh, and fun fact! Ryan reportedly works out with PA congressman Jim Gerlach at the House gym. Because I know you were wondering.

• One bullet we’ve dodged so far: A new CDC report shows that 12 states now have very high obesity rates (defined as states in which at least 30 percent of the adult population is obese), with Mississippi taking the No. 1 spot with 34.9 percent. Pennsylvania’s obesity rate clocks at 28.6 percent, according to the new figures.

• Next time you see a doc who seems too young to be treating you, take heart: A new study found that doctors-in-training pose no greater risk for complications when they assist surgeons with procedures. Phew.
