The Checkup: To Cut Back on Alcohol, Change the Glass

Curved glasses may make you drink faster than you think.

• Whether you’re counting calories or simply trying to do a solid for your liver, cutting back on alcohol may be as simple as using a different glass. A new (and small) psychology study out this week found that alcohol served in curved glasses—ones that are narrower at the bottom and wider at the top—are consumed nearly twice as fast as drinks served in straight glasses. The problem, the researchers say, is our inability to accurately judge volume in curved glasses. Reports NPR:

[Researchers] discovered that the people had a much harder time determining the halfway point of the curved glass. What’s more, the subjects who performed the worst at this task were the same ones who drank their alcohol the fastest in the prior experiment.

Food—er, drink—for thought?

• Would you ever buy a used yoga mat on Craigslist? What if said yoga mat came with a very detailed (and hilarious) timeline of the one time it was used? That’s the sales tactic one Craigslist seller used—and it makes for some seriously funny reading.

• Yikes. There’s a school in California where 84 percent of the kids haven’t been vaccinated. Experts say they like to see an immunization rate of at least 90 percent in all communities to minimize disease outbreak. The Washington Post has more.
