Where Do You Stash Keys When You Run?

A friend asked me this very question recently and I didn’t really have a good answer. See, I specifically buy workout clothes that come with pockets (I’m so smart!), so figuring out what to do with my keys when I run isn’t something I deal with very often. But for her, it’s a daily conundrum. “Carrying them is annoying,” she complained. “And clipping them to the dog’s leash”—she runs with her pup—”can be clunky and loud.”

Harrumph.

And so I put the question to you, Be Wellers. The Internet turned up some funny DIY solutions—tying them in with your shoelaces or on your shorts waist-band string (smart!), or stowing them behind the little door of your car’s gas tank (no so smart?)—so I’m wondering what you do with your keys when you go out for a jog. Any unique solutions?

I have a set of specific running keys—just the two for my front door. I either tie ‘em in my with shoelaces or roll them up the cuffs of a shirt with long sleeves. Not necessarily unique, but it works for me!

I have a key cuff from Lululemon that will fit one key. Otherwise I tend to go for shorts/capris with a pocket, or I use a SPI belt if I am also taking my phone.

I put my key on a lanyard which I wear around my neck. I usually put the key side of the lanyard on my back so it’s not bouncing off my chest. Other than buying clothes that have pockets made for keys, this has been my best solution.

I use a safety pin! I pin the key to the inside of my spandex or the pocket of my running hoodie. Just make sure to pin it to a seam or else you might start making a hole in your gear.

I either put them in the pocket of my shirt/shorts or I have a water bottle with a pocket that fits my iphone and keys. I used to do the shoelace thing all the time!

    1. Fake rock (google it – amazon has several). 2. In the car (car has combo lock) 3. Leave back door open (I know I’m lucky that I live in that kind of neighborhood).

  7. Mike Bertha says:

I wear shorts that have key pockets in them. When I wear something else I tuck a single key into my iPod band against the back of my phone. Never had a problem with that method.

A lot of athletic shorts/pants/shirts have small pockets or zip pouches for keys, which are great! Otherwise I put my housekeys on a small keyring and lace them up with my shoes and tuck them into the laces. Works like a charm!

  9. Angela says:

I made a special key just for running, and if I am not wearing a shirt with a special pocket it goes right in my sports bra! haha

  10. Melissa B says:

Athleta makes a great tank top with a huge zip pocket in the small of the back. I can hold my keys and phone (in case of injury). Much better than having to find pants with pockets.

I only ever bring the one key I need (house or car) and the rest stay inside. Most of my clothes have pockets, but for those that don’t, I tuck it in my sports bra (on the side, like under my arm) or loop it in a hair tie, then put the hair tie around my pony tail (you can also just wear it on your wrist).

When all else fails, I make my boyfriend carry it :)
