“Oh man,” my husband said last night after seeing a commercial for Taco Bell’s new Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. “That looks soooo good.”
I was appalled for two reasons: 1) I’m not a huge Doritos fan (am I the only person who thinks they make your breath stink for days?), and 2) I couldn’t even begin to imagine how many miles a person would have to run to burn one of those suckers off.
So this morning I decided to sleuth out the answer to #2, figuring one of those Dorito-made shells would put the taco off the charts. But guess what? They’re actually not that bad. I mean, they’re not great, but I’ve seen much worse.
According to tacobell.com, the Locos Tacos Supreme, which is the souped-up option loaded with beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and reduced-fat sour cream, clocks in at an even 200 calories. It also has 12 grams of fat (4.5 of which are saturated), 35 milligrams of cholesterol, 370 milligrams of sodium, and 15 grams of carbs. That’s not awful, awful. Some context: It has fewer calories than the 350-cal Fresco bean burrito and less than half the calories in the chicken Cantina Bowl, one of Taco Bell’s salad-like options. And if you opt for the regular Cool Ranch taco (i.e. the non-”supreme” one in which you lose the tomatoes and sour cream), you’ll save a few calories, too: those are 160 calories a pop.
Granted, these tacos aren’t huge. But eating three puts you at roughly the same calories as eating three chicken tacos with the same ingredients at Chipotle—so it’s not like the Doritos shell, which is the big junk-food draw here, is adding a ton of extra bad stuff. And while I would never consider these tacos a healthy option, if you’re dyyyyyying to give one a whirl (*ahem* Chris Leaman *ahem*), you can put your calorie-counting conscience at ease.
Just don’t eat like 10 of them. I can’t help you there.
