City Sports Debuts New (But Made to Look Old) ‘Philly Rocky Run’ T-Shirt

The ultimate #throwbackthursday

When I received an e-blast from City Sports yesterday about its new vintage t-shirt line, I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple shout outs to good ol’ Philly in the mix. The tees are part of the store’s new throwback 1983 Collection, which is actually a tribute to City Sports’ 30th anniversary this year. Each tee represents something from the year 1983. And so, we have the “Philly Rocky Run” shirt, a nod to Rocky Balboa’s run up the Art Museum steps. (By the by, Wikipedia tells me that none of the Rocky movies actually came out in 1983 and that his first jaunt up the Art Museum steps was in the first film in 1976, but … close enough, I guess.)

The other Philly shirt in the collection is printed with words “Freedom 5K” and an outline of the Liberty Bell. As far as I can tell, that isn’t—and never was—a real race on Philly, but maybe I’m not googling the right thing? Anyone know? If you have a clue, let me know in the comments. (I reached out to City Sports to ask them what it means but I haven’t heard back. I’ll update if/when I do, assuming no one else has solved the mystery by then.)

Either way, both shirts are available for men and women. The Rocky Run shirt comes in orange for men and burgundy for women; the Freedom 5K shirt comes in light grey for men and blue for women. They’ll set you back $22 a piece.
