Local Running Stores Are Stocking Up on Red Socks for the Broad Street Run

If you’re running or watching the Broad Street Run this year, don’t be surprised if you see a lot of red socks. Many runners gearing up for the May 5th race are adding a pair to their race-day wardrobe as a show of support for the bombing victims in Boston. (Get it? Red socks? Like the Boston Red Sox? Clever!)

The movement is happening on Facebook, where an invite asking Broad Street participants to wear red socks for the race is gaining a lot of traction. 6 ABC reported yesterday that the socks are flying off the shelves at Bryn Mawr Running Company, where owner Bob Schwelm is donating proceeds from sock sales to the Boston bombing victims.

Philadelphia Runner’s Ryan Callahan emailed me this morning to let me know his Center City store will have red socks in stock by Thursday; the other locations should have them by the weekend. Like BMRC, Philadelphia Runner will donate proceeds to The One Fund.

“Our phone has been ringing nonstop since this idea came out last week,” said Callahan. “We are bringing in as many red socks as we can order.”

Philadelphia Runner will have red knee-high socks from Puma and red crew socks from Asics, both selling for $10. Bryn Mawr Running Company has Asics crew socks for $6, Wigwam 3/4 crew socks for $14, CEP calf sleeve for $40, and CEP compression socks for $60.
