‘FATKINIS’: FAB NEW BIKINI LINE FOR PLUS-SIZE WOMEN

A blogger on a mission created a swimsuit line to make attractive bikinis for curvy women.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 5/17/2013 at 1:30PM | 1 Comment

Thanks to The Gloss for the heads up about a fab blogger named Gabi Gregg (a.k.a. GabiFresh), whose mission to help plus-size women embrace their curves turned into an awesome new collabo between Gabi and online swimsuit retailer Swimsuits for All.

Gabi’s been throwing around the term “fatkini” for a few years now, as part of her crusade to encourage body diversity in swimwear. Last summer, her effort culminated in a “fatkini” photo gallery, showing “31 hot sexy fat girls in skimpy swimwear.” The post landed her on the TODAY show, and got her all kinds of exposure on sites like the Huffington Post, latimes.com and more.

This year, Gabi’s back on the fatkini kick with a new bathing suit line inspired by her mission. The collaboration with swimsuitsforall.com features suits in sizes 8 to 34, and—get this—they’re actually good looking, too. In fact, that suits have been so popular that in the three days since their debut, most of the styles and sizes have already sold out. Awesome, right?

Check out this slideshow over at Teen Vogue to see a lookbook of all the styles.

CITY SPORTS’ LIMITED EDITION NEW BALANCE SNEAKERS ARE AWESOMELY PSYCHEDELIC

I like 'em. Do you?

Posted by Emily Leaman on 5/15/2013 at 1:40PM | No Comments

Will you get a load of that puppy? I know some of you will disagree with me, but I dig it. Like, a LOT.

The shoe is a just-released, limited-edition New Balance W890, made exclusively for City Sports (note the store’s logo on the tongue) in honor of its 30th anniversary year. The shoes are available for men and women for $115. The website says they aren’t being stocked at the Wayne store, for whatever reason, but you should be able to find them at the Center City and Ardmore locations. They’re also, of course, available online.

OH, MY: THESE SUPER-LOW-RISE WORKOUT TIGHTS ARE A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN

Ladies, would you wear them?

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/18/2013 at 10:30AM | No Comments

No, what you’re seeing here is not a design error or some sort of Lululemon-esque factory botch job. These new super-low-rise workout tights from trainer-to-the-stars Tracy Anderson are meant to be that crotch-eclipsingly low, according to New York mag. And unless you’re approximately the size and build of a twig, I’m pretty sure they’re a disaster waiting to happen. (You can use your imagination.)

I have to say, I have one pair of yoga pants that are cut lower than my usual mom-jeans-like running tights. These particular leggings probably land an inch below my belly button. Since I’m used to wearing workout pants that hit me an inch above my belly button, I always feel super self-conscious in the low-rise ones and wear them veeeery cautiously with visions of unfortunate mooning episodes playing in the back of my mind.

So the tights here? I can’t see them making it in to my gym wardrobe any time soon. How about you?

More photos are here.

CITY SPORTS DEBUTS NEW (BUT MADE TO LOOK OLD) ‘PHILLY ROCKY RUN’ T-SHIRT

The ultimate #throwbackthursday

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/11/2013 at 2:46PM | No Comments

When I received an e-blast from City Sports yesterday about its new vintage t-shirt line, I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple shout outs to good ol’ Philly in the mix. The tees are part of the store’s new throwback 1983 Collection, which is actually a tribute to City Sports’ 30th anniversary this year. Each tee represents something from the year 1983. And so, we have the “Philly Rocky Run” shirt, a nod to Rocky Balboa’s run up the Art Museum steps. (By the by, Wikipedia tells me that none of the Rocky movies actually came out in 1983 and that his first jaunt up the Art Museum steps was in the first film in 1976, but … close enough, I guess.)

The other Philly shirt in the collection is printed with words “Freedom 5K” and an outline of the Liberty Bell. As far as I can tell, that isn’t—and never was—a real race on Philly, but maybe I’m not googling the right thing? Anyone know? If you have a clue, let me know in the comments. (I reached out to City Sports to ask them what it means but I haven’t heard back. I’ll update if/when I do, assuming no one else has solved the mystery by then.)

Either way, both shirts are available for men and women. The Rocky Run shirt comes in orange for men and burgundy for women; the Freedom 5K shirt comes in light grey for men and blue for women. They’ll set you back $22 a piece.

LULULEMON’S PRODUCT CHIEF RESIGNS AFTER SEE-THROUGH YOGA PANTS DEBACLE

The company's stock plummeted after the fiasco last month.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/5/2013 at 1:43PM | No Comments

Yogawear giant Lululemon certainly isn’t taking its see-through yoga pants scandal lightly. The New York Times is reporting that chief product officer Sheree Waterson is stepping down and that Lulu is redoubling quality-control oversight efforts in its factories to (hopefully) ensure that no more behinds go uncovered in the future.

The public got wind of the quality issue last month after the company pulled affected pants from stores and issued a recall. Lulu warned customers that there would be a shortage of black yoga pants for the foreseeable future. The company’s stock took a tumble as a result.

Although Lulu execs won’t come out and say that Waterson’s departure is the result of the brouhaha—they couched it as “part of a plan to reorganize its product team to support long-term growth” to the Timesmost everyone is drawing the connection. Because, I mean, come on.

HUMBLEBRAG: THIS T-SHIRT TELLS THE WORLD YOU’RE TRAINING FOR BROAD STREET

With just over a month left until race day, I think you're totally within your rights to start bragging about how awesome you are.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/2/2013 at 2:45PM | No Comments

We’re at 33 days and counting until Broad Street. Eeek! If you’ve been sticking to your training plan, you’re totally due for some humblebragging. So, there’s this:

In addition to sort-of-subtly telling the world that you’re an awesome runner—I mean, you are going to kill it for 10 miles, right?—this shirt could come in handy in answering all those annoying questions from your non-runner friends, like:

“Why don’t you want to come out for happy hour?”
>> Shirt says: “Because I’m IN TRAINING, and I’m off alcohol for the time being.”

“Why are you constantly eating?”
>> Shirt says: “Because I’m IN TRAINING, and I’m constantly hungry.”

“Why don’t you want to stay out until 3 a.m. on Friday night?”
>> Shirt says: “Because I’m IN TRAINING, and I have a long run tomorrow morning.”

“Why can’t you come to brunch this morning?”
>> Shirt says: “See above, you idiot.”

Useful, right? The Broad Street Run is selling these shirts for $10 for a cotton tee and $20 for a tech shirt. Buy ‘em here.

NEW NOLIBS SHOP SELLS CUTE CLOTHES FOR DIEHARD FEMALE SPORTS FANS

Christine Blechman is about as big a Phillies fan as they come: She’s been going to games for as long as she can remember; she waxes nostalgic about The Vet like it’s a long, lost relative; and she goes to Florida for spring training every year. But something’s always bothered her: “I would look around at all the women at Phillies games and notice that they were either buying a kid’s size or taking a men’s jersey and tying or cutting it,” she says. “There isn’t anything that fits us the right way. I wanted to bring something to the market that’s comfortable, flattering and fits nicely.”

INTRODUCING: STELLA MCCARTNEY’S “CHECK OUT THE RASH IN MY CROTCH” WORKOUT TIGHTS

Okay, so that's not the real name. But these pants? Ew.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 2/20/2013 at 1:40PM | No Comments

There isn’t much to say about these $100 workout tights from designer Stella McCartney’s collection for ADIDAS. I mean, in this case, I’m pretty sure the picture says a thousand words.

If you’re not hearing those words as clearly as me, allow me to translate: “LOOK AT THE RAGING RASH I HAVE IN MY CROTCH!” the picture is saying. “ISN’T IT UNFORTUNATE??”

Yes. Yes, it is.

Oh, and if you’d like a matching shirt, that exists, too. You know, if you’re hoping the rash will spread or something.
