MANAYUNK TO HOST FIRST EVER ‘FIT FEST’ AND FITNESS WEEK

Get entry to a dozen local fitness studios for one flat rate.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 5/17/2013 at 10:46AM | 1 Comment

The fit biz is certainly booming in Manayunk: at last count, there were 18 (!!) fitness-related businesses in the ‘hood, from personal trainers to yoga studios to indoor cycling and rowing outfits and more. So, the powers-that-be decided to round them all up for an awesome, massive Fit Fest on June 1st, kicking off a brand-new festival called Fitness Week. Which, you know, is right up our alley here at Be Well.

Fit Fest will include free outdoor fitness classes with instructors from area studios—The Wall Cycling Studio, Merge Dance Studio, Bikram Yoga Manayunk and more—as well as vendor booths, free health consultations and the “Walk the Wall” fundraiser. During Fitness Week, you can buy a $25 punch card valid for a free class at 12 local fitness studio. The idea is to give you the opportunity to try out lots of different classes for one flat rate. (And by the way, ladies, you can think of it as a warmup for Be Well Boot Camp on June 8th, okay?)

Fit Fest will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st. Manayunk Fitness Week runs from June 2nd through 7th. More info, including a link to purchase the punch card, is here.

FREE POLICE-LED 10-MILE BIKE RIDE IN CENTER CITY THIS WEEKEND

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is organizing a "Safety Ride" in Center City.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 5/16/2013 at 10:55AM | No Comments

Here’s a pretty good way to round out Bike to Work Week. This Saturday, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and Center City District are organizing a free “Safety First” bike ride through Center City. The ride is advertised for cyclists of all levels (including families), but is really meant for newbies who aren’t yet confident about riding bikes in the city. The group will be led by a police escort as well as reps from Center City District and BCGP. All traffic laws will be obeyed and enforced throughout the ride.

The ride itself is free, of course, but organizers are encouraging cyclists to register ahead of time here. There will be raffle drawings before and after, giveaways and more.

Cyclists will gather at 9 a.m. at Washington Square Park at 6th and Walnut. The route is an almost-five-mile loop that’ll be completed twice. See the map below.

TO DO: WALK THE WALL FUNDRAISER IN MANAYUNK

Do you have what it takes to conquer the famous Manayunk Wall?

Posted by Lindsey Murray on 5/15/2013 at 11:18AM | No Comments

Cyclists cringe at the thought of climbing the infamous Manayunk Wall, a 17-percent-grade hill right in the middle of Manayunk and long the most grueling part of the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (now the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic). But that dang hill isn’t just a challenge for cyclists. Next month, a group of people will walk up the infamous incline for the Walk the Wall fundraiser—and you’re invited to join them.

The event raises funds for organizations in the Roxborough and Manayunk area, specifically Journey’s Way, the Manayunk Roxborough Food Co-Op Initiative, North Light Community Center and the Roxborough YMCA. All participants will receive a snack, beverage, “Walk the Wall” button, and their choice of a “Walk the Wall” water bottle or backpack. (We love us some good swag.) Find out more and register here.

$15, June 1st anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., The Manayunk Wall, base of Levering Street at Cresson, Manayunk.

TO DO: RUN OR DYE 5K

A color blast (literally!) at Citizens Bank Park.

Posted by Lindsey Murray on 5/14/2013 at 11:26AM | No Comments

I was pretty much heartbroken last month when I went to sign up for The Color Run in Philly only to find out that tickets sold out at lighting speed. I imagine that a lot of you Be Wellers are facing the same issue so I’m here to present you with an alternative: The Run or Dye 5K!

Much like other color races, Run or Dye blasts runners with safe, eco-friendly, powdered dye through out the 5K. Once finished, a huge color bash is held—you know, just in case you didn’t get completely covered from head to toe during the race. The coolest thing about this race? It takes place at Citizens Bank Park! Find out more and register here. And for a list of 30 other fun races coming up this summer, go here.

$45 for individuals, $40 per person for teams (4 or more), June 15th at 9 and 11 a.m.,  Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way, Philadelphia.

Learn Queen Bey's best moves—just in time for her July concert in Philly.

Posted by Lindsey Murray on 5/6/2013 at 2:38PM | No Comments

After Beyoncé’s off-the-chain Super Bowl performance in February, Philly Dance Fitness posted a question on its Facebook page, asking if anyone would be interested in learning to booty shake and chest pump like Queen Bey herself. And, well, obviously they did.

Instructor-trio Angela, Maya and Deborah will be replicating the moves from Destiny Child’s and B’s biggest hits for you to learn. The girls promise to teach the choreography to chart-topping songs like “Baby Boy,” “Dance for Me,” and, of course, “Single Ladies.” Find out more and register here.

STREAM THIS: THE ULTIMATE BROAD STREET RUN 2013 PLAYLIST

Make sure to get these songs on your iPod before hitting the road on Sunday.

Posted by Justin Krajeski on 5/2/2013 at 2:04PM | 1 Comment

It’s. Finally. Here. That’s right, the largest 10-mile road race in the U.S.A. is this Sunday, and it’s right here in our backyard.

Hopefully, by now, you’ve picked out your red race-day socks, you’ve memorized BSR’s new security measures, you’ve accepted that Cecily Tynan will most definitely leave you in the dust, and you’re looking forward to running side-by-side with a few enthusiastic Bostonians. You good? Good.

Although you may think you’re 150 percent prepared to face the day, having covered all of the above plus some seriously intense training because you’re the bomb dot com, I think you’re missing something: You’re missing the soundtrack.
