31 FUN SUMMER RACES NEAR PHILLY WHERE YOU’LL DO MORE THAN JUST RUN

Because a 5K that's just running is soooo 2012

Posted by Lindsey Murray on 5/1/2013 at 1:15PM | 1 Comment

Part rave, part 5K, the Electric Run is hardly your typical race.

Fitness and fads pretty much go hand in hand, am I right? There’s always a hot new class everyone’s obsessed with (see: hot yoga, barre, et al) and gear you just have. to. have.

If I were a betting woman (which I am, duh), I would wager that summer 2013 will be the season of The Race that Doesn’t Feel Like a Race. Seriously, gone are the days of a couple laps around a track followed by a granola bar and free t-shirt. These days, a 5K is more likely to include some zombies, a mud pit, and clouds of colored cornstarch. And let me just say: This is one fitness fad I can get on board with.

Because I’m all for running races that are more than just, er, running, I’ve rounded up some of the most unique, most outrageously fun runs that are on tap for Philly this summer. Consider this the Ultimate Guide to Races for People Who Don’t Just Want to Run. Or something.

WATCH YOUR INBOX: BROAD STREET BIBS AND CORRAL ASSIGNMENTS TO BE EMAILED TOMORROW

Plus: what your corral color actually means.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/26/2013 at 11:50AM | 2 Comments

Just a quick note from the Broad Street Run folks that corral assignments and race-bib numbers are due to be sent via e-mail tomorrow, April 27th. If you don’t see the email, you might want to check your spam box. When the race notified runners that they were selected from the lottery back in February, more than a few of us had to fish those notifications out of our spam folder.

For anyone who’s never run Broad Street before—or a race in general, for that matter—organizers try to group runners according to the finish time you indicated on your registration form. The hope is that by corralling runners (hence, you know, corrals) and using a waved start procedure—meaning, they build in a few minutes of padding between when each corral crosses the start line—runners will be spaced out at well-paced intervals with few traffic jams along the course. It doesn’t always work, but it helps.

When you get to the starting line on May 5th, just look for your corral color and go stand with your people. Of course, no one really polices this procedure to make sure everybody is where they’re supposed to be, except for possibly the elite group and the first competitive group at the front. So if, say, you wanted to run with your friends in a corral further back, I’m 99 percent confident that no one would actually stop you. But you didn’t hear that from me.

DAAAANG: CECILY TYNAN HOPES TO RUN BROAD STREET IN 61 MINUTES

I talked to super-star runner and 6 ABC meteorologist Cecily Tynan about how she's preparing for the May 5th race.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/25/2013 at 12:46PM | No Comments

Cecily Tynan suited up for the Gary Papa 5K, which she runs every year.

I’ve always known 6 ABC meteorologist Cecily Tynan is a serious runner. I mean, I put her on the cover of last year’s Be Well Philly print issue for that very reason. But until I chatted with her yesterday about her Broad Street Run training, I don’t think I realized how much of a rockstar (like, Rock. Star.) that woman actually is.

This year will be Cecily’s fifth Broad Street Run. Last year, she won her division (females 40 to 44) with a crazy-fast time of 1:02:12. This year, she’s aiming to shave a minute off that time, clocking in at 1:01, which would mean pacing at 6:10 per mile—three seconds faster than her pace last year. “I notoriously go out too fast at races, and then the last couple of miles are torture,” she says. “My goal this year is to have a good race all the way through, including a good final couple of miles.”

Although I’ve got no where near the lofty goal of Cecily’s—if I finish Broad Street without walking, I’m usually pretty happy—I was still more than happy to pick her brain yesterday about how her Broad Street training has been going, how she’s gearing up for the race in the final week and a half, and what she hopes the weather forecast will be on May 5th. (Hey, I had to ask, right?) Read our conversation below.

MAYOR NUTTER INVITES BOSTON MARATHONERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BROAD STREET RUN

Plus: city officials outline safety and security measures for the May 5th race.

Posted by Justin Krajeski on 4/25/2013 at 10:23AM | No Comments

From left to right: Mayor Michael Nutter, Stephen Wray, Dan Hilferty and Mike DiBerardinis.

“I talked to [Boston] Mayor [Thomas] Menino this morning,” Michael Nutter said during a press conference in Rittenhouse Square yesterday. “He’s getting the word out to the Boston running community: they are more than welcome to participate in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. We send our hearts out to all of them, and we want to be supportive.”

Independence Blue Cross, the City of Philadelphia, Department of Parks and Recreation and Cadient Group yesterday announced a city-wide initiative called “From Philly to Boston with Love” to show unified support and encourage donations for those runners, spectators and families affected by the bombings in Boston last week. In addition to an open invitation to the Boston running community, officials detailed what the city will be doing to hearten Boston and keep runners safe during the Broad Street Run on May 5th.

LOCAL RUNNING STORES ARE STOCKING UP ON RED SOCKS FOR THE BROAD STREET RUN

Many runners will sport bright red socks on May 5th to show support for the Boston bombing victims.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/23/2013 at 3:37PM | 1 Comment

If you’re running or watching the Broad Street Run this year, don’t be surprised if you see a lot of red socks. Many runners gearing up for the May 5th race are adding a pair to their race-day wardrobe as a show of support for the bombing victims in Boston. (Get it? Red socks? Like the Boston Red Sox? Clever!)

The movement is happening on Facebook, where an invite asking Broad Street participants to wear red socks for the race is gaining a lot of traction. 6 ABC reported yesterday that the socks are flying off the shelves at Bryn Mawr Running Company, where owner Bob Schwelm is donating proceeds from sock sales to the Boston bombing victims.

Philadelphia Runner’s Ryan Callahan emailed me this morning to let me know his Center City store will have red socks in stock by Thursday; the other locations should have them by the weekend. Like BMRC, Philadelphia Runner will donate proceeds to The One Fund.

THE CHECKUP: WHICH SHOULD COME FIRST, DIET OR EXERCISE?

Both, according to a new study.

Posted by Emily Leaman on 4/23/2013 at 7:30AM | No Comments

• In the age-old chicken-and-egg question of health and fitness, which should come first: diet or exercise? That’s what a new study set to find out and—fortunately or not, depending on how you look at it—researchers came back with this answer: both.

If you must choose one or the other, they said, go for exercise. Why? Because “changing diet first may interfere with attempts to establish a regular exercise routine” later, according to HealthDay. The researchers, who are at Stanford med school, figured this out by employing four different study groups—people who implemented diet and exercise changes at the same time; those who dieted first and exercised later; those who exercised first and dieted later; and those who made no changes whatsoever—and tracking their outcomes. Those who made both changes at the same time, obviously, were the most successful, hitting both the U.S. guidelines for exercise and nutrition and eating higher-quality calories by the study’s end. Those who exercised first and dieted later saw the second-best results. But those who dieted first were never quite able to hit the exercise goals. The reason, according to study author Abby King, could be pegged to the fact that diet habits are easier to make over than fitness ones. After all, we have to eat anyway, so swapping one food for another isn’t really that difficult. But finding time to exercise can be a real challenge. Your takeaway? Start with mastering the more difficult task when you’re the most motivated to do so; the easier one will, well, more easily fall in line later.
