TO DO: SANDY HOOK DONATION YOGA CLASS AT FOCUS FITNESS MAIN LINE

Show your support for those affected by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Posted by Justin Krajeski on 1/23/2013 at 1:37PM | No Comments

The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School rocked America to its core and devastated many, many families. With the new year comes new ways to support those who were directly impacted in its wake—and Philadelphians can lend a hand, too. Focus Fitness is hosting a Sandy Hook Donation Class to raise funds for the Newtown Parent Connection. The all-level vinyasa yoga class will be an hour and a half long and incorporate reiki, a “laying on hands” Japanese treatment for stress reduction and relaxation that also, appropriately, promotes healing. All donations will go directly to the Newtown Parent Connection. Register and learn more here (click the Series/Workshops tab).

$20 minimum donation, January 26th from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Focus Fitness Main Line, 1111 East Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr.

FREE CLASSES AT NEW MAHA YOGA STUDIO IN CENTER CITY STARTING TODAY

The former Dhyana Yoga studio in Ardmore, which changed names last fall, is opening a new location in Center City this week.

Inside Maha's new Center City studio

Ardmore’s Maha Yoga is making its Center City debut this week, with a new studio at 17th and Sansom and five days of free classes to celebrate. The Main Line location is actually a former Dhyana Yoga studio; the name changed around Thanksgiving when Dhyana Vitarelli and Maha co-owners Justicia and Shawn DeClue parted ways.

“We were business partners with Dhyana in Ardmore, and it was always part of the contract that after a couple years we’d buy her out,” says Justicia. The Ardmore studio, she says, already has its new sign up.

Here in the city, the new location at 1700 Sansom officially opens tonight with a Yogahour class at 5 p.m., and a grand-opening party to follow. Yogahour one of the studio’s regular class offerings, a fun 60-minute session set to upbeat music. Although it’s free tonight as part of the grand-opening festivities, Yogahour usually costs $7 and is open to all levels. The drop-in price for the studio’s other classes is $15.

Maha specializes in alignment-based Vinyasa and also offers massage (Swedish, deep tissue, Thai) and other bodywork.

The free classes run through Tuesday and include morning and evening sessions. You don’t have to sign up for classes ahead of time during opening week, but they are first-come, first-served so you’ll want to get there early to get a spot. The studio will open 30 minutes before each class. Students can bring their own mats or rent one at the studio.

Check out the schedule of free classes here.

Maha Yoga Center City, 1700 Sansom Street, sixth floor, Philadelphia, 215-864-0770.

TO DO: YOGA FUNDRAISER FOR THE MORRIS ANIMAL REFUGE

Downward dog and other animal-inspired poses included (obviously).

Posted by Kimberly Tai on 11/30/2012 at 2:33PM | 2 Comments

On December 7th, join Sara Ronsvalle at Philly Power Yoga as she leads a special charity-yoga class to benefit homeless animals at the Morris Animal Refuge in Center City. Stretch in downward-facing dog and other animal-inspired poses as you set your intentions for the practice. Bonus: the event will feature adorable, adoptable animals from the neighborhood animal shelter!

For more than 135 years, the Morris Animal Refuge has been accepting every animal looking for a home. Almost 2,000 animals are brought to the refuge every year, and finding loving homes for these pets is always a challenge. All funds raised from this event will benefit the shelter.

After class, there will be a member-appreciation party full of cocktails and finger foods, plus you’ll get a chance to meet the adoptable pets. No prior yoga experience is necessary. Mats, towels and water will be available at no charge, courtesy of Philly Power Yoga. Find more info here; sign up here.

$20 for class only, $25 for class and party, $15 for party only; Friday, December 7 at 6:15 to 9 p.m., Philly Power Yoga, 2016 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.
