Bride-to-Be Blogger Danielle: My First Fitting

Since I am not getting married until May, I know it seems early for a wedding dress fitting. However, Priscilla of Boston is custom making my wedding gown to fit my measurements and the first step is to create a muslin — the same dress in a less expensive material. Then, that dress will be used as a pattern for my gown. My muslin arrived before Labor Day, and I was told that I should come in for my first fitting in early November.

I was very excited to see my dress, even if it was not the exact one I would wear on my wedding day. I went to work giddy Monday, counting down the minutes until it was time to leave for my fitting. I got to the salon and headed down to the alterations department. When Mia, the head of alterations, brought out the muslin, I gasped. Even that was gorgeous! I couldn’t believe how pretty this “cheap” material looked. It honestly was nicer than some dresses I tried on. I could not wait to try it on!

And then it happened … my worst nightmare. I couldn’t get the dress on. Mia tried to help me and it would not go over my hips. Not if I stepped in. Not if I put it on over my head.  Not when she tugged a little. We heard the seams start to give and stopped tugging.

I panicked. Did I put on weight?! Maybe a couple of pounds. Ok, maybe five. But she assured me that was not the problem. I got dressed and she tried to figure out what had gone wrong. Turns out that we had taken measurements of both my high hip and my low hip, and the factory used my high hip measurement in place of the lower one.

Mia assured me she could fix it, and reminded me that this is one of the reasons I elected to go with a muslin in the first place. (That and my abnormally short torso!) She is going to alter the muslin and I’ll have to go back next week for another fitting. It sounds like I’ll ultimately have four fittings now, but I don’t think I mind if it means getting it right.

Still, that lack of gratification got me down a little. Talk about anti-climactic!
