Bride-to-be Blogger Kathleen: House Hunting!

Sometimes, I think the future hubs and I might be a little crazy. Like, when we recently decided that wedding planning should also be accompanied by purchasing a house. I know, apparently we enjoy torturing ourselves, right? However, we do have good reasoning behind the house hunt.

I have been commuting to Princeton from Conshohocken for three years now, which is roughly fifty miles one way. So on average, it takes me about an hour to get to work. The future hubster drives (I believe) six miles to work one-way, for a—hold on to your fedoras—combined total of 12 miles! Ok, ok, I’m being a little unfair: Even though he does have a six-mile commute, he has to deal with 76, which, as most of us know who live around here, can unleash the fury of the potty-mouth drunken sailor who resides deep down in us all. But since the unfair scale still tips heavily in my favor, we have made the decision to purchase a home that will provide each of us with equal commuting time.

I don’t know about you guys, but we like to watch a whole lot of HGTV. Naturally, this makes us real estate pros. Our favorite show, without a doubt, is House Hunters, and of course, we like to compete with each other by seeing who can correctly guess which house the buyer actually purchased. Our stats look a little like this: Christian: 324, KJ: 2.

Clearly, I am terrible at the house hunter game—but I’m totally stoked that we are going to be real life house hunters. I do worry sometimes, though, that I might have a bit of a negative eye. But, that is one of the many reasons why Christian is perfect as my other half: He will balance out the negative and help put a positive spin on things. Granted, if there is a three-car garage and a large shed for all of his toys, it’s going to take a whole lot of negative banter to bring him back from his man-shed-tool-la-la land. I’m imagining something like this:

Christian: “Oohh, look at this garage! There’s room for all my tools and our cars, and there’s a large shed out back for all the lawn stuff, and …

Me: “Great! Is there enough room for a bed?”

But I’m still excited to get started! Do any of you homeowners out there have any tips for us as first-time buyers, or just for buying our first home together? How did you compromise on what you each wanted out of a home?
