This morning on Good Morning America, they were exploring this very topic, and according to some of the people they spoke with—including one couple who walked happily out of their Farm Fresh grocery store with a $316 wedding cake that they say was exactly what they were looking for—this is certainly becoming a thing, especially with couples who are looking to cut costs, and for whom a wedding cake isn’t a top priority.
Seems some grocery stores these days are even employing wedding-cake decorators in order to provide this option to couples and compete with area bakers. Watch the video here, and then tell us: Would you ever go this route for your cake? If so, what’s your reasoning? Tell us in the comments.

Of course – why not? It’s so vain to think that anyone will give a second thought to how good your wedding cake is or was, and by the next day, it’s well forgotten no matter what. First time I got married, 10 years ago, we got our cake from that fool on “Cake Boss,” up in Hoboken – well before he had all those rubes and slack-jawed yokels lined up across the corner to get in there. It was fantasitc, maybe the best cake I ever had. And no one cares. By the time the cake comes out, 80 percent of the guests can’t wait to go home, and the others are too hammered to care. So, while I didn’t have a grocery store cake at wedding 2.0, I can say it was much less a priority to both of us (my lovely wife learned her lesson the first time, too).
I actually WANTED to go this route for our cake because in all honesty, the bakery from ShopRite makes absolutely THEEEEEE best cakes! Unfortunately, our ShopRite did not do wedding cakes and they also do not deliver, which would have obviously been problematic.
I think what people don’t realize is when a grocery store does a wedding cake it isn’t your run of the mill sheet cake with your faces on it and piped icing that says “Congrats!” They actually make really great products that content with and even surpass bakeries who specialize in wedding cakes but at a fraction of the cost.
Don’t expect anything super fancy but for a basic cake, you could definitely save a lot of money and end up with a great product. I’m extremely happy with our choice for our cake but we are definitely spending more than twice as much.
