While I love summer just as much as the next girl, the season has a way of forcing me to acknowledge a little issue that never seems to go unnoticed once shorts and tank tops become everyday attire: I am as pale as pale can get.

I’ve learned to accept the fact that the gene pool didn’t work in my favor (I blame my sister, the tanned goddess) but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up on my pursuit of a little golden color—I love a good spray tan. If the salon wasn’t 25 minutes away, I’d always be in faux glow heaven, and I know many girls who feel the same.

So, needless to say we were super pumped to hear about Erica Caplen, Philly’s newest traveling airbrush tanner.

For just over a year now, Caplen’s flourishing business has been catering to the tanning needs of clients on the go. “I’ve always been a fan of the spray tan because of the way it makes my skin look and feel,” she says. “I first started getting spray tans in college and soon after went to take lessons so I could spray myself on my own time.”

After finding success spraying family and friends, Caplen expanded her business—Tanning by Erica—and now serves clients all across the city. Her portable tanning tent makes setting up at your home or office a breeze (she only needs a 3 ft. wide by 6 ft. tall space) and the entire process of spraying and clean up is complete in ten to 20 minutes. All of the products Caplen uses are PETA-approved vegan and made with 100-percent natural ingredients and organic DHA. She also carries five different shades to fit a variety of skin types.

For the bride who wants a sun-kissed look for her Big Day, it’s a good idea to plan in advance. “I suggest that brides-to-be have at least two trial spray tan appointments before deciding on the perfect shade for her special day,” says Caplen.  She also recommends getting sprayed anywhere between two days and a week before the wedding, depending on how bronzed you want to be. (And no need to worry about orange streaks on your pure white gown. The pH-balancing, medium-level formula Caplen uses contains unique moisturizers that keep the color from rubbing off on your dress.)

So gather up your ‘maids—Caplen has a $35 special for parties of five or more—and make a day out of your pre-wedding beauty preparations (otherwise it’s $40 for full body and $20 for half).

To schedule your appointment, Caplen can be reached at 610-348-5731 or via email at tanningbyerica@yahoo.com.
