Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Another Surprise Shower!

Carly and her girlfriends at her surprise shower.

Last Saturday night, Sean and I had plans to go out to dinner with his sister Rachel and her husband Colby to celebrate Rachel’s birthday. Rachel and Colby live in Delaware and were planning to come up to Philly for a night out. However, late Saturday afternoon Sean got a call from seven-months pregnant Rachel to say she wasn’t feeling up for the trip and that we should plan to celebrate another time. I was disappointed, as I love going out to dinner with them, but understood that between the threatening weather and her not feeling great, we’d literally need to take a rain check.

Luckily, we had back-up plans. My best friend Jill had planned a BBQ for Saturday night, which I’d thought we were going to miss because of our dinner plans. After Rachel and Colby cancelled, I immediately texted Jill to let her know we’d be coming over.

A lot can happen in a year.

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Our Engagement Anniversary!

Sean and Carly on their engagement day.

A year and five days ago, Sean asked me a question that changed my life: “Will you marry me?”

And while there are some obvious changes that will come along with the wedding (new marital status, new last name, new ring!) there have been a lot of unexpected things that have happened since last May 12th. I guess what I’m trying to say is: a lot can happen in a year!

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: OUR RSVPS ARE COMING IN!

Last week, Sean and I got our invitations in the mail. With a cramped right hand, I was more than happy to pass off our invitations to the postal worker to be sent out into the world.

As soon as the next day, I was already getting texts from friends who had received the invitations and were very kind with their reviews. What a relief! I was so glad to know that USPS was able to decipher my falligraphy (that’s fake calligraphy, if you were wondering) that I didn’t even think about what would happen next.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: MY SURPRISE OFFICE SHOWER!

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: My Surprise Office Shower!

I have some pretty amazing co-workers, and today I want to thank them for the beautiful shower they surprised me with!

I work in a very fun department at Drexel. A huge part of my work-happiness is due to the amazing people I get to work with each day. I don’t know for sure, but I think it is rare to find a group of 20-plus people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company as much as we do. From laughter-filled lunch breaks to very happy happy hours, we are a group that knows how to have fun. And when there is cause for celebration, we will celebrate.  So I expected that my co-workers would throw me a shower in honor of my up-coming wedding. What I didn’t expect was when or where.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: MY FIRST BRIDAL SHOWER! OR: WHEN RED CHAMPAGNE MEETS A WHITE DRESS

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: My First Bridal Shower! Or: When Red Champagne Meets a White Dress

Carly with her mom and sister at her bridal shower.

I woke up one Sunday a few weeks ago to a beautiful day. Sun was pouring in my bedroom windows and the forecast promised mid-60s. What the forecast didn’t promise was the April shower that would take place that afternoon (and that’s because John Bolaris wasn’t invited!): my first bridal shower!

I say my first because I’m being blessed with three: one with my mom’s friends, one thrown by my bridesmaids, and a joint shower for both of us at his parents house with some of their local friends. This first shower was held at my parent’s house in Ambler, with a guest list including some family friends, a few of my mom’s co-workers, and some of my girlfriends as well.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: LEARNING CALLIGRAPHY AND ADDRESSING THE INVITES MYSELF

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Learning Calligraphy and Addressing the Invites Myself

Sean and I received our invitations in the mail a few weeks ago. They look beautiful and are everything I could have asked for (including easy to design, order, and assemble). Since that box came in the mail, however, it has been staring at me—daring me to make the next move and address them.

That’s where I’ve run into some trouble. How do I address them? I know some people hire calligraphers, but that’s not the route I want to go down. We could print labels, but there’s something to a handwritten invitation that I really appreciate. So, I don’t want to hire someone to write them but I want them handwritten. Sounds like I should put pen to paper and get going myself.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: THE MOMENT JUST HIT ME: I’M GETTING MARRIED!

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: The Moment Just Hit Me: I’m Getting Married!

Carly and Sean at their engagement party.

Something pretty exciting struck me this week and I want to share it with you.

I’m getting married!

Now I know that may sound silly. In fact, I’ve known for sure that I’m getting married (and have been wearing the ring to prove it!) for the last 11 months. But, that’s been all in my head; something I’ve known. After Sean’s proposal, we went immediately into planning mode and it’s been go go go ever since. Of course, I’ve continued to love Sean and feel excited about our upcoming wedding throughout these last months, but recently, as the Big Day draws closer, the knowledge we are getting married has changed from being a fact in my head to a feeling in my heart.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: OUR HONEYMOON IS BOOKED!

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Our Honeymoon is Booked!

After months of looking for our perfect honeymoon destination, one sort of fell into our laps the other nigh—and two days later, we have booked our trip!

Sean and I love the beach, so it’s been no question that we wanted to go somewhere warm and tropical. But those criteria only narrow the list so much. We also knew we didn’t want to spend a full day (or more) traveling each way, which eliminated places like Hawaii and Fiji from our list.  So, we were able to narrow potential destinations to the Caribbean and Mexico.

Sean’s parents had offered us their time-share to cut down on costs, and we’d totally planned to take them up on that. But, the challenge was finding an opening! Sean and I are getting married the weekend before the 4th of July, which is apparently a big week to travel. (I thought everyone just went down the Shore!) So availability in the time-share has been very limited, and, unless we wanted to bump our honeymoon to a later date, pickin’s were slim.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: SELECTING OUR (VERY EXTENSIVE!) WEDDING-DAY MENU

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Selecting Our (Very Extensive!) Wedding-Day Menu

Brand X Pictures

Being food-lovers, Sean and I have been looking forward to our menu tasting since we first picked our venue. And, once our venue was taken over by Cescaphe we were even more excited, as we’d hear amazing things about their food!

About a week ago, a representative from Cescaphe called to schedule our menu selection appointment and we were ecstatic, though curious because we were scheduled for a 9:30am appointment. When I called back to confirm the appointment, I decided to clarify whether we’d be tasting or simply selecting, and was disappointed to find out there would be no sampling involved.

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: Our Invitations Are Ordered!

Remember a few weeks ago when I said that I was in a wedding planning lull? Well, that lull was short lived, and I have been one busy bride-to-be these last few weeks.

I am happy to announce that we’ve selected, approved proofs for and ordered our wedding invitations. (Special thanks to all of you who shared comments and advice on the matter!)
