BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: WHY I CAN’T HAVE THE WEDDING CAKE I WANT

Posted by Kathleen Johnson on 5/14/2012 at 1:53PM | 13 Comments

Well … my dreams of a “naked cake” have just literally been smashed in my face.

I never would have thought news about a wedding cake would ruin my day, but sadly, it has. One of the first decisions I made when setting out on this whole wedding-planning journey, was that the cake would be one of those “naked” cakes—which is basically just a cake without the outer frosting (like the one pictured here). I sent the pictures on to our contact from the caterer, and for months, I thought we were good to go on the cake front.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: HIS BACHELOR PARTY AND MY SHOWER!

Christopher Robbins

The time has finally arrived. Christian departed this morning for his fun-filled bachelor-fishing weekend in Florida … and I am at home, alone with our dog.

I am very excited for him that he is able to have a trip like this with all of his guy friends, but I have to admit, I am a little sad that he is going to be away for four days. We are barely ever apart from each other for more than twenty-four hours, so this will be a little bit of a struggle (for me at least). I know it is a good thing to miss each other every once in a while, but I’m not excited about going to sleep at night with an empty left side of the bed. However, it may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of my favorite trashy reality TV shows. (Guilty pleasure!)

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: DETAILS & WEDDING BANDS

In just two days, we will be at the two-month mark, and things are truly starting to pick up. Last week, we managed to get all of the invites organized, stuffed, addressed, stamped and mailed without a hitch, thanks to the help of my future sister-in-law! (Oh, and Christian made us dinner while we slaved away—that counts as contributing, ladies). We’ve already started to get some RSVPs in, so I find myself rushing to the mailbox every day after work to collect my new “treasures.” It is a sad thing to admit that you are excited about RSVP cards, but it is what it is! We’ve also received a bunch of compliments on the invites themselves, and that has given me a little bit of confidence that I might actually be doing something right.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: CONQUERING THE TO-DO LIST—AND THE CEREMOY

Kathleen's DIY display for the gift table at her reception!

Seventy-three days and counting! I just had a great weekend in which my MOH and I finished one complete DIY project. We worked on the display for the gift table (pictured), which was pretty easy, but wasn’t exactly what I originally had in mind. It’s funny how you can sit down for four hours working on one thing, realize it isn’t working and then spend two minutes with the plan B and be finished. Even though it isn’t exactly what I had pictured, I love how it came out! I just hope it survives the wait.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: IN NEED OF SOMETHING(S) BORROWED AND OLD

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.

Everyone knows this tradition/superstition that is supposed to give you good luck in your marriage. It seems pretty simple—but of course, I would take something so simple and turn it into something mildly difficult. READ MORE

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: TO VEIL OR NOT TO VEIL?

What an exciting weekend I just had! I was finally able to try on my dress for the first time since the big purchase! I had a ton of anxiety before the appointment because I was afraid I wasn’t going to love the dress anymore (though I think that is a normal feeling, right?), and because I also ordered a smaller size than the one I tried on in the store, I was worried that the fit would be off. But all of that worrying was for nothing: The dress was even more beautiful than I remembered! Now, the question is whether or not I will chose to wear a veil.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: THREE MONTHS LEFT!

I wish I knew where to start. I am kind of in this strange mental state of disbelief, excitement and slight panic. I feel like when you set up a wedding website and the countdown hits around the three-month mark, it should warn you that you will immediately start having nightmares and mild bouts of anxiety.

I don’t want to scare anyone who’s still coming up to this point—it isn’t like an overwhelming meltdown feeling—but you definitely start feeling like things should no longer be placed on the back burner. Like you have just crossed over into “game-time” mode, and your brain just keeps playing the Rocky tune over and over again. I have no idea where the last year and three months have gone, but time is no longer my friend.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: WHAT IF WE DON’T HAVE A SONG?

What do you do if you don’t have a “song”?

Back in the day, couples almost always had a specific song, it seems, that had some sort of significance to their relationship when they were dating. Then, that particular song would automatically become their wedding song. So, what happens if you don’t really have one?

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: CHOOSING OUR FLOWERS!

The vessels Kathleen will use for her reception flowers.

So excited for the weekend!

Not only is it a three-day weekend, but my MOH and I are taking a trip to Malvern for some wedding-related errands. We are going to meet with our florist (the amazing Heather Moss Potter from Cottage Flowers), and stop in at some hair salons in the area to get a feel for pricing and atmosphere and whatnot.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: I’LL BE A TOMS SHOES BRIDE

Posted by Kathleen Johnson on 2/10/2012 at 12:43PM | 20 Comments

Kathleen's wedding shoes! Photo, toms.com.

Shoes. I’ve been focusing a little too much about shoes these days.

Mainly, I’m trying to figure out what all of the bridesmaids should wear on their feet—for both the ceremony and the reception. I’m not going to force them to all buy the same shoes, but since the ceremony will take place on grass, I have made the recommendation that they all wear either flats or wedges.

But because I’m thinking that the odds of them all picking out shoes that will coordinate with each other are very slim, I’ve been thinking of purchasing each of them a pair of TOMS as a gift. (I am totally going to be rocking a pair of TOMS at the reception, so I thought it might be cute if each bridesmaid had a pair, too.)
