Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: My Surprise Office Shower!

Digital Vision

I have some pretty amazing co-workers, and today I want to thank them for the beautiful shower they surprised me with!

I work in a very fun department at Drexel. A huge part of my work-happiness is due to the amazing people I get to work with each day. I don’t know for sure, but I think it is rare to find a group of 20-plus people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company as much as we do. From laughter-filled lunch breaks to very happy happy hours, we are a group that knows how to have fun. And when there is cause for celebration, we will celebrate.  So I expected that my co-workers would throw me a shower in honor of my up-coming wedding. What I didn’t expect was when or where.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KRISTY: MY WONDERFUL BRIDAL SHOWER!

Bride-to-be Blogger Kristy: My Wonderful Bridal Shower!

Kristy at her bridal shower last weekend.

You know the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”? Well, it came full circle to me this weekend when I realized how many people, events, and moments made me into the person I am today. Sometimes, I guess, it takes a momentous event, like your bridal shower to make you realize it.

This past weekend, I gathered with some of the ladies from my “village” to celebrate our upcoming nuptials. There were women from all aspects of my life; ladies that babysat me before school, ones that fed me homemade meatballs every Sunday, ones that shared late nights and even ones that shared too many glasses of wine. But more importantly, ladies who have shaped me into a woman that will soon marry the love of her life. And what better way to celebrate this than good food and wine, amazing company, embarrassing soon-to-be-newlywed games, and a showering of presents!

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CARLY: MY FIRST BRIDAL SHOWER! OR: WHEN RED CHAMPAGNE MEETS A WHITE DRESS

Bride-to-be Blogger Carly: My First Bridal Shower! Or: When Red Champagne Meets a White Dress

Carly with her mom and sister at her bridal shower.

I woke up one Sunday a few weeks ago to a beautiful day. Sun was pouring in my bedroom windows and the forecast promised mid-60s. What the forecast didn’t promise was the April shower that would take place that afternoon (and that’s because John Bolaris wasn’t invited!): my first bridal shower!

I say my first because I’m being blessed with three: one with my mom’s friends, one thrown by my bridesmaids, and a joint shower for both of us at his parents house with some of their local friends. This first shower was held at my parent’s house in Ambler, with a guest list including some family friends, a few of my mom’s co-workers, and some of my girlfriends as well.

VOLT, HYATT AT THE BELLEVUE’S NEW SALON, LOVES BRIDES AND THEIR ‘MAIDS

Posted by Amanda Willis on 2/28/2013 at 10:52AM | No Comments

Volt, Hyatt at the Bellevue's New Salon, Loves Brides and Their 'Maids

Volt Salon at the Bellevue.

For a long time, the space held Pierre & Carlo. For a quick minute, it held Helicion. But now, after a year of construction, the salon space on the food-court level of the Shops at the Bellevue holds the new Volt Salon—and lucky for area brides, bridal beauty services are one of their favorite things.

For them, when it comes to brides, they really like to focus on the consultation. There, not only will they discuss options for your Big-Day hair and makeup and try some looks out, the meeting also acts as a bit of a lesson on how you can prep your skin and hair in the coming months before you walk down the aisle, so that you know you look your best on that day.

They also offer some fun options for a pampered night out with your ladies for your bachelorette party: Up to eight of you can either head to the salon for a combo of hair, makeup and mani/pedis—or, if you book ahead of time, the salon can work with you to book a room at the Bellevue, and the pampering—along with bubbly and whatever else you’d like to bring!—can happen there. And once you’re all beautified, you can continue the party in your room and head out on the town.

Updos start around $75, though pricing is discussed with your stylist during your consultation.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KRISTY: MY BRIDAL SHOWER (WITH PICS!)

Bride-to-be Blogger Kristy: My Bridal Shower (With Pics!)

Kristy at her bridal shower.

“I will not let winter storm Nemo snow on my bridal shower!” I exclaimed a few Wednesday nights ago at the end of the weather report. I had trouble taking this storm seriously, and kept envisioning a cute little snow storm with one bad fin, swimming up the east coast and leaving us with just a minor snow covering. I may have even enjoyed it if my shower was in Philadelphia, but it was in North Jersey, and we weren’t dealing with a Disney/Pixar character, we were dealing with a blizzard.

Months after Eric and I got engaged, some friends of his mom’s approached us about having a bridal shower in North Jersey. In the absence of Eric’s mom, they still wanted to shower us with love and joy before our wedding. We happily agreed and the planning began.

LOOKS WE LOVE: INSTEAD OF A BLOWOUT, THE BRAID BAR AT PHILADELPHIA’S AMS SALON

Looks We Love: Instead of a Blowout, the Braid Bar at Philadelphia's AMS Salon

The Waterfall braid at AMS Salon in Philadelphia.

We love a good blowout as much as the next girl. But right now? So over them.

Right now, we are kind of obsessed with the recently added Braid Bar service at AMS Salon in Center City. It works like this:

  • Make an appointment with stylist Tasha Jetter, and show up either with your hair already washed and dried, or they can do that for you, if you prefer.
  • Flip through Tasha’s braid book, and pick out the style you want. You can bring in a picture, of course, too—but her book has got about a billion gorgeous options in it, including ones, we guarantee, you haven’t seen before. Something that’ll look fab on you is bound to be in there.
  • Sit there for approximately the time it takes you to scroll through your Facebook friends’ latest statuses, and she’ll be done. (Obviously, some styles take a little more time than others, but the point is, she’s fast. The waterfall style we got recently for a coworker’s wedding honestly took about seven minutes.)

Lots of these styles would be adorable for everyday, but we love the idea of them as an alternative to a blowout or curls or chignon or top knot for a special occasion, whether it’s for your bachelorette party or rehearsal dinner—or all of your ‘maids wearing a different braided style on your Big Day.

The pricing is $20 a pop if you just do the braid; $50 if you do a wash and blowdry, too.

Would anyone rock a braid instead of an updo for their Big Day?

HOST A SEX TOY PARTY AT NOLIB’S THE VELVET LILY FOR YOUR BACHELORETTE

Posted by Alexandra Leshner on 6/1/2012 at 9:56AM | No Comments

Your bachelorette party just got a bit more scandalous.

Thanks to the experts at NoLibs upscale adult boutique the Velvet Lily, you and your closest girlfriends can celebrate your last hoorah as a single lady with a party centered on one thing: sex.

You can make the focus education: Gather your gals for an in-store sex-ed class, such as “The Art of Self Pleasure” or the “Tease and Please Workshop” (think Fifty Shades of Grey), and let the highly educated staff teach you a thing or two about passion and romance. A private, two hour class for your crew (they suggest a max of 30) costs $250 and you’re welcome to bring along nibbles and champagne for an additional clean-up fee. (Bonus: one of their staff members is a pole dancer. And she does demonstrations.)

DIARY OF A MARRIAGE: THE SILENT TREATMENT

Normally, when J. goes mute around his parents, I pick up the slack. Not this time.

Polka Dot

At 11:30 in the morning this past Sunday, I was in a living room in Bucks County, seated on one of the twenty or so folding chairs that were arranged in a U around a giant TV screen. My mother-in-law was next to me, blotting her face with a napkin.

We were at the bridal shower for Aubrey, who is engaged to our friend Andrew, whom J. has known since grade school. As I mentioned last week, Aubrey lives in the Philippines, so she was participating in the festivities via Skype, hence the awkward, TV-centric seating arrangement. We’d reached a plodding rhythm: Aubrey’s sister, who lives in New Jersey, methodically opened a gift, held it up to the TV screen so Aubrey could see it, and then we’d all coo knowingly: Oh, yes, you’ll never know how you lived without the OXO can opener!

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER ALYSE: MY BRIDAL SHOWER!

Alyse at her shower this past weekend.

Maybe this is my inner all-girls high school and sorority girl talking, but I love showers. I always have a great time catching up with family, friends, my friends’ parents and my mom’s friends. And now that my days are decidedly not filled with all-female themed events (but those were the days), there’s nothing wrong with a little girl time.
