BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

Posted by Kathleen Johnson on 1/16/2012 at 12:43PM | 2 Comments

Kathleen's successful DIY centerpiece vessel!

Can it just be June 29th already? Seriously, the wait has gone on for long enough. If it’s not going to snow and be all winter-like, we should just skip the next five months and get on with the wedding I am so desperately trying not to freak out about.

The little things are really starting to pile up now and I am just waiting for the moment where Christian finds me hiding in our crawlspace under the stairs, with a carton of Ben & Jerry’s, bawling my eyes out about how I’ve burned all of my fingers off trying to create the magical yarn bottle centerpieces I saw on Pinterest. (OK, Pinterest, you win. I am addicted and can’t stop pinning. Side note: If you don’t know what Pinterest is, get on it!)

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: TROUBLE IN DIY LAND

Posted by Carrie Denny on 11/11/2011 at 4:48PM | 2 Comments

What is that phrase given to people who can’t dance? They have two left feet? Well, I have two left hands … and I am a righty. I am so envious of anyone who has the ability to DIY anything. My mother is an amazing crafter. She quilts, she knits, she bakes, she does it all. Unfortunately, I did not inherit her crafting gene. She swears one day it will magically appear, but until that day, I will continue to call her a liar. With all of these dreams of a cutesy-pa-tootsy DIY wedding, I feel like I am back in the 2nd grade, shunned to the corner of the classroom for not being able to cut a piece of paper on the straight dotted line. I’m pretty sure I managed to glue my forehead to my desk one time, too, but let’s save that for the impending DIY crafters therapy sessions.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER CAROLYN: NOT FEELING THE FLOWERS

Posted by Carrie Denny on 10/4/2011 at 2:38PM | 1 Comment

Other than loving peonies, I must admit I’m a little clueless about flowers. I pretty much think they’re all nice, so I’m a little bit of a hot, indecisive mess during meetings with potential florists. I can only imagine their frustration when I shrug at any question that goes beyond what I want the bouquets to look like. “I’m sure what you pick will look pretty,” is probably not what a florist wants to hear.

FLOWER GIRL

There's a new florist on the scene.

Sullivan Owen is one of those people who can do things. You know the type: They could make a Fashion Week-worthy dress—or Rodin Museum-worthy sculpture—out of aluminum foil and chicken wire, and never seem to be out of mind-bogglingly creative ideas. After studying at UArts, she honed her too-crafty-to-be-true skills as a visual merchandiser for Anthropologie and other retailers for more than a decade, then fell in love with floral design when creating the raved-about arrangements for her own 2009 wedding.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KATHLEEN: K.I.S.S.

(Keep it Simple, Stupid)

Posted by Carrie Denny on 8/23/2011 at 6:15PM | No Comments

Keep it simple. This is what I have to keep telling myself before I fly off the deep end. And when all of this wedding planning stuff first began, I was all about keeping things simple: Dump a bunch of candles in tall votives on the tables for centerpieces, throw a few daisies here and there and serve up a big Rice Crispy-treat wedding cake. Done and done. However, the more I search for unique décor ideas, the more confused I become. I don’t want to look back on the day and say that I wish I would have taken the little things a bit more seriously. Sometimes the small details are key—but again, I need to keep in mind that I will most likely be doing everything myself. I think I am starting to become my own worst enemy.

WHAT KATE'S BOUQUET SHOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE

We're just sayin' ...

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/13/2011 at 11:08AM | 1 Comment

Before you roll your eyes, this is not another royal wedding post. You’re over it, we’re over it, we get it. But this is fun.

If you recall, when we recapped the royal wedding a few weeks ago, we approved of many a thing — but not so much the flowers. They weren’t ugly, or anything, and we loved the actual blooms chosen, as well as the meaning each of them is said to hold — but they just could have been a little more … something.

Turns out, we were not the only ones who thought that — including some of Philly’s fabulous florists! And over at Beautiful Blooms Events, they decided to amuse themselves by playing around and coming up with their own interpretation of Kate’s bouquet, which, to us, is what we were talking about: Her bouquet, just more.

Pretty, right? Check out their process here. Apparently even flowers with itty bitty little blooms can be super labor-intensive. Enjoy!

Whaddya think? Like this one better?

OUR FAVORITE SPRING BOUQUETS!

Gorgeous flowers from local florists.

Posted by Carrie Denny on 3/30/2011 at 1:33PM | 1 Comment

Enough with this weather! It’s SPRING, goshdarnit, and we here at PW have decided that we are going to act like it’s spring and think like it’s spring even if our lovely local weather people insist that forecasts including ugly phrases like “wintry mix” are coming our way. It’s practically April, for crying out loud!

It was with this determination — and a day dream that involved a lush, green outside and blossoms blooming in the park on my walk home — that I decided maybe we could all use a little spring inspiration. And since there’s nothing prettier than spring flowers, what we’ve got for you here is a round-up of some of our favorite warm-weather bouquets from recent issues, all created by fabulous local florists, of course, all available and ready to hear your Big-Day ideas.

We hope they’ll brighten your day, give you a smile, and maybe even get your imagination flowing for the bunch of beautiful blooms you’ll carry down the aisle, one day soon. Got a favorite? Tell us in the comments! And happy spring. Photography by Brett Thomas.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER DANIELLE: CHOOSING FLOWERS — AND A FLORIST

Posted by Carrie Denny on 2/10/2011 at 9:01AM | 3 Comments

Bouquet of sun gold cymbidium orchids, pincushion protea, sea holly, sky blue delphinium, green tea roses and bear grass, created by Precious Petals, Huntingdon Valley. Photograph by Ryan Lavine.

To me, one of the more challenging aspects of putting this wedding together has been selecting the flowers. And we’re not even putting floral arrangements on tables — we’re going to have seascapes with candles — so I only needed bouquets, one boutonniere (only Tim is wearing a jacket) and some flowers to help decorate the ceremony location.

I had an idea of the look and feel I wanted — looser, more natural, less formal — to go with the beach wedding, but I was not highly opinionated on the exact flowers I liked (though there were a few types I absolutely do not like). To complicate matters, my bridesmaids are wearing a light aqua color that I absolutely love, but finding flowers that go nicely without being too bright or too washed out has been tough.

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER DANIELLE: MY SISTER’S WEDDING

Posted by Carrie Denny on 12/27/2010 at 7:00AM | No Comments

This weekend, I took a break from my own wedding plans for my sister’s wedding, at which I was maid of honor. It was a wedding vastly different from the one I am planning — it was a small, intimate gathering at my parents’ home, though more formal than mine will be.

I offered to help her with flower arrangements and bouquets, and also do her hair. The flowers proved to be a challenge, as most of them arrived with frostbite. We salvaged as many as we could, and then added some grocery store flowers to fill in the gaps. We had enough flowers in the end to create arrangements for the three dinner tables (pictured), the ceremony, two bouquets, two corsages and four boutonnieres. Her hair was much easier, I dare say!
