TREND: MORE AND MORE WOMEN DOING BOUDOIR SHOOTS TO MARK SPECIAL OCCASIONS (YOU KNOW, LIKE WEDDINGS)

Posted by Carrie Denny on 6/19/2013 at 2:22PM | No Comments

Saw an interesting segment on Good Morning America this morning that was basically about boudoir shoots, though I don’t actually think they used the term boudoir, which is weird, because that’s what the kids are calling it these days.

It was about how there seems to be a rising trend in ladies doing these shoots, whatever you want to call them—they involve hair, makeup, pretty underwear or even less coverage, and posing about as if you were a lingerie model, and not an accountant/lawyer/barista/editor/stay-at-home-mom.

But it’s not just that ladies are doing this that’s making it a thing, so much—it’s that they’re doing it in bunches of girlfriends in order to mark some sort of special occasion in their lives. Multiple ladies are going to these shoots, often to celebrate something that at least one of them is going through, be it a wedding or big birthday or life change (divorce, illness; general new beginnings).

I did a boudoir shoot last fall, that I might deliver a first-hand report to all of you, since it’s such a popular wedding gift for a bride to give her groom—and I will confirm that it is extremely fun to do it as a group. (And when I say as a group, I mean you all go together, and do your own individual shoots. There is an example in the piece below of all the friends being in a shot together. This is not what I mean.)

I can extra confirm it, because if you read my post, you’ll learn that after seeing my pictures, a few friends of mine decided they just had to try it out for themselves—and that actually did happen, and they all went together. (I went along to that one for moral support, and I have to say, hanging out on the couch in yoga pants eating a bagel and drinking champagne while the rest of them sucked in was also great fun.)

Anyway, here is the segment on the trend, and a reiteration of my two cents: You should do it with a bunch of girlfriends before your wedding. It’s so much fun.

SOME BACKSTORY ON THE VIRAL T-REX WEDDING PHOTO

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/30/2013 at 5:34PM | No Comments

We’re guessing there’s a good chance that yesterday, you caught wind of the most recent wedding photo to go completely viral—you know, the one with the T-rex chasing a terrified bridal party? (This one.) Just one of those things that could not possibly be more random, but somehow, is awesome.

Well today, we’ve gotten a little more background on the couple, the photographer, and this particular snapshot—though hilariously, there isn’t an interview with the couple available just yet, because they are, apparently, on a honeymoon so secluded that they don’t even know this thing has gone viral. (So says Today, who’s also got a few “normal” wedding portraits of the couple.) Oh, the irony.

Photographer Quinn Miller told HuffPo that in order for the photo to work, he needed to see real fear from the couple and their bridal party—”not lame faces”—and that since the groom has some sort of affinity for dinosaurs, it didn’t take any convincing for the couple to say yes to this little trick.

Here’s hoping this one ends up on their mantel some day.

Are you and your groom planning any crazy, posed shots on your wedding day?

PHOTOPOP: PHILLY’S NEW EVENT PHOTO BOOTH SERVICE

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/13/2013 at 5:51PM | No Comments

Laura Novak and Beka Rendell of PhotoPOP.

Beka Rendell, one half of Philly’s Styled Creative (you’ve seen their photo-propping work in our pages before!) and Laura Novak, former wedding photographer and current owner of Little Nest Portraits in Wayne and Glen Mills, have recently teamed up to form a new business that we’re pretty pumped about: PhotoPOP!

PhotoPOP is an event photo booth service that basically takes care of the pictures and the background and props all in one easy little package. Oh, though it’s not actually a booth: Book them, and you’ll get an actual photographer who will come and set up a little area at your wedding reception complete with a backdrop—one that you either choose from PhotoPOP’s inventory (they currently have six different designs in stock and will continue to add more), or one that they’ll custom source or design for you—and oodles of fun props for your guests to play with. Here are the options:

  • Book a Level One PhotoPOP and you’ll get a photog for three hours, an in-stock backdrop and props, and a gallery of images that you can share and post. (You’ll get an email with various choices in it, plus a list of suggestions from the ladies as to what combos they think look best!) This option is $950.
  • Book a Level Two PhotoPOP and you’ll get a photog for four hours, the gallery of images to share and post, and a personal consultation during which you can design your ultimate little mini-set for your wedding’s photo “booth.” This option is $1,300.

All of the photographers are part of Laura’s staff, and when it’s all said and done, no matter what level you choose, you’ll receive a disc full of your hi-res images. Prices start a $25 for a la carte prints.

So fun! Are you considering some sort of photo booth station at your wedding?

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER STEPHANIE: OUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SESSION!

Bride-to-be Blogger Stephanie: Our Engagement Photo Session!

A shot from Pat and Stephanie's engagement shoot in Washington Square Park. Photo by Susan Stripling.

Pat and I aren’t a public-display-of-affection kind of couple, so as we walked to Washington Square Park last Friday evening for our engagement shoot—both still agitated from the massive traffic we sat in on our way down to the city—I was a bit nervous. How were we going to fair with a photographer up close and personal, snapping photos of us kissing and hugging?

I was also a bit worried about the location. Pat and I had hit all of the local spots significant to us in a shoot we did with our videographer a few weeks ago (which I’m hoping to keep top-secret until the wedding, so it’s a surprise!). So when I kept thinking about where to shoot our engagement photos, nothing was necessarily floating to the top of the list. But we knew we wanted to be outside, preferably somewhere natural and beautiful.

HERE ARE 4 SUPER CUTE IDEAS FOR WEDDING-DAY PHOTO OPS

Here Are 4 Super Cute Ideas For Wedding-Day Photo Ops

Click to enlarge and shop these wedding-day photo ops.

We here at PW see a lot of wedding photos, as you can imagine, and one thing we have definitely noticed over the past few years is a giant uptick in the amount of styled or staged photos that are in the mix. (Like this or this.) Whether they involve just the bride and groom or the whole wedding party, they almost always seem to be worth the effort in the end, and end up being total framers.

Well today, you can thank BHLDN, Antho’s sister wedding brand, for these four very adorable ideas for staged wedding-day photo ops. (Click the diagram (or here!) to make it bigger—and shop their ideas!)

For the record, a) one of my friends did the save-the-date garland thing last year, and it is so stinking cute—and b) I am putting in the request now that if anyone does the tandem bicycle thing, that you please send that shot on in. How fun!

Are you planning on doing any styled or staged photos on your wedding day to go along with the portraits and candids? What are you going to do?

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER AND WIFE TRAVEL WORLD, SNAPPING SHOTS OF HER IN HER WEDDING DRESS

Posted by Carrie Denny on 3/11/2013 at 12:12PM | 1 Comment

Jeff Salvage is a professor at Drexel University and a part-time professional photographer. His latest (and ongoing) project: photographing his wife Jennifer in her wedding dress over the past nearly five years of their marriage as they hop across the globe on various trips and vacations.

The story goes that it all started in 2008 at the couple’s wedding in Chile. Jeff wanted Jennifer to pose all over Easter Island, where their celebration was, so as to get a few different gorgeous shots of her in her wedding dress in this awesome location. Since then, Jeff has shot Jennifer wearing her strapless Maggie Sottero wedding dress everywhere from gazing over the Great Wall of China and at the Eiffel tower, to on a camel in Egypt, descending a staircase in the Vatican and diving in Jamaica (yep, she’s taken it underwater). There’s dog sledding in Iceland, there are waterfalls in New Zealand … well, you get the picture. (Ha!)

It’s a project they call One Woman, One Dress, One World, and they’ve chronicled it all on their blog (you can check out the gallery of images there, too). It’s really something. Sure beats those “trash the dress” sessions, if you ask me!

Do you have any plans for any crazy shots in your wedding dress, either on your Big Day or after?

JOE FLACCO’S GOOFY PHILLY WEDDING PHOTOS MAKING THE ROUNDS

Joe Flacco's Goofy Philly Wedding Photos Making the Rounds

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco and his wife Dana (both Philly-area natives) got married at the Hyatt at Penns’ Landing back in 2011—quite a few of our vendor buddies were responsible for their lovely Big Day, actually—and thanks to the Super Bowl (which some of you may or may not even be watching this weekend, either thanks to the Eagles’ absence or for any other given reason), their handful of funny, staged wedding photos seem to be going viral again.

The shots included stops at a South Jersey movie theater near where the couple is from, as well as their high school, before they headed over to their reception, which ended with fireworks being set off over the river. Check them out on Delaware-based photographer Jason Prezant’s blog.

We’ve actually been seeing this whole staged wedding photo thing, lately—this shot of a groom and his groomsmen all decked out for the wedding while decking each other in a fist fight definitely gave us a chuckle. Any of you planning on doing photos like this? What sorts of ideas do you have?

BRIDAL OPEN HOUSE AT TERRAIN

Posted by Amanda Willis on 1/31/2013 at 5:59PM | No Comments

Bridal Open House at Terrain

Wedding by Terrain. Flowers by Sullivan Owen. Photo by Alison Conklin.

If you’ve shopped at Terrain before, or eaten in the so-lovely Garden Cafe, and always wondered what it would be like to hold your wedding there, you’ll get a chance to more than just imagine it next Saturday, February 9, when the venue holds a bridal open house in the evening from 6 to 9pm.

The space will be set up like an actual wedding from each season, so you can get an idea of what it might actually look like on your Big Day, whether you’re thinking of having it in the spring, summer, fall or winter. Terrain will be showcasing their own decorating services, though you’ll also be able to see the work of—and chat with—other local vendors, including florist Sullivan Owen and photographer Michael Ash of Ash Imagery.

Lovesick Inc will keep the tunes coming the whole night, and reps from BHLDN will also be on hand (Terrain staff will even be wearing BHLDN dresses, so be sure to take note for your ‘maids!) showcasing their wedding gowns, accessories and wedding decor for your perusal. You’ll also be able to taste samplings from their event menu with appetizers and food stations from the Garden Cafe. (Along with wine and refreshments, of course.)

The open house is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. RSVP here, and happy planning!

BRIDE-TO-BE BLOGGER KRISTY: DECIDING WHETHER TO HIRE A VIDEOGRAPHER

Bride-to-be Blogger Kristy: Deciding Whether to Hire a Videographer

iStockphoto

Asking recent brides their opinion on hiring a videographer for their wedding has been similar to asking new moms whether or not they use pacifiers for their newborns: It’s borderline political. Everyone seems to have a very opinionated comment; it’s either one of their favorite aspects of their wedding, or they’re happy they spent money elsewhere.

I was always skeptical of their real “love” for the video, though: Were they just saying that to justify their expense? The brides that declined a videographer bragged about the additional expenses they could afford like the mashed potato bar at their cocktail hour or the amazing dessert table they chose to spend their money on.

CREATE A CUSTOM HASHTAG FOR GUESTS INSTAGRAMMING YOUR WEDDING

Posted by Carrie Denny on 11/27/2012 at 5:25PM | 2 Comments

Create a Custom Hashtag For Guests Instagramming Your Wedding

Monkey Business

Once upon a time, in order to try and collect fun photos of their wedding from their guests’ perspectives, couples would put a few disposable cameras (remember those?) in the middle of each table, tell guests to have at it, then collect them at the end of the night and get them developed. Can’t say I’ve seen that happen in quite a while.

And that’s because these days, there is no shortage of smartphone apps that allow couples to directly receive the pictures their guests are taking at their wedding with said smartphones. This spring, we told you about Wedding Snap, and just this month, our own photo editor here at PW used Wedding Party App at her wedding.

This little idea, though, just crossed our desks, and we thought it was so cute we had to share: You know how you can hashtag the pictures you post on Instagram, and then people can search that particular hashtag? Simply create your own custom hashtag for your wedding, and ask guests to slap it on there when they ‘gram photos at your wedding. Then you can click on the hashtag and see ‘em all in one spot—then, of course, make any requests to your guests for ones you’d like to have yourself.

Love it! How are you planning on grabbing a few extra shots from the crowd from your wedding? We’d love to hear your ideas!
