OBAMA STANDS UP FOR GAY MARRIAGE

Finally.

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/9/2012 at 4:48PM | No Comments

Today, President Barack Obama vocalized his feelings on gay marriage in an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts that will air on Good Morning America the morning of Thursday, May 10th.

In it, he says, “I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

So, he’s in. And premature or not, we can’t help but wonder how long now it’ll be until gay Philadelphians can finally, legally tie that knot.

CHANGING YOUR NAME: WHAT I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN

Our newly married writer wishes she had had a crib sheet for this process.

It isn’t too much of a stretch to say that I really liked most of the wedding planning process. I certainly liked getting married: I liked our ceremony, our party, our honeymoon. I was, for the most part, excited about every part of becoming a Mrs.—except for the long series of adventures involved in actually becoming a Mrs. And by that I mean the official changing of my name.

DIARY OF A MARRIAGE: WHEN THE WIFE’S AWAY, THE HUSBAND WILL PLAY

Turns out J. is looking forward to some all-by-himself-guy-time when I’m away.

When J. and I were out with another couple last weekend, we mentioned that I’d be leaving for a getaway with some girlfriends in a few days. Our friend Joe’s eyes lit up.

“You’re going to be alone for four whole days?” he asked J. incredulously. J. nodded. “Yup.” Joe looked excited for him, like the world was suddenly full of possibility. As soon as J. and I got home, I wheeled on him.

TODAY’S GAY MARRIAGE DISCUSSIONS

From G Philly and The Philly Post.

Our sister sites G Philly and The Philly Post have been blowing up today with some intelligent discussion on the subject of gay marriage, and we wanted to share.

First, G Philly has a piece on Veep Joe Biden’s recent comments supporting gay marriage, and the affect its had on the public still wondering what, exactly, Obama’s thoughts and feelings on the subject are. His press secretary Jay Carney tried to fill in the blanks, but we have to agree with our colleagues that it all sounds a little vague.

Next up, they’ve got a video of CNN’s Anderson Cooper also talking about the Obama administration’s stance on same-sex marriages, and bringing up all the various issues that still plague even states where the union is legal.

And finally, The Philly Post’s got a clip of Ed Rendell on MSNBC today, taking Obama to task for not speaking up more clearly about his views on gay marriage. Seems Ed thinks Obama needs to “man up” on the subject.

Last week, we showed you Vera Wang’s all-red Spring 2013 bridal collection—and today, as more images come rolling in from Bridal Market, we found another red stunner, this time in Romona Keveza’s Spring 2013 Couture Bridal Collection.

Talk about drama! Again, we wonder how many brides are going to rock the red down the aisle, but we absolutely love that idea, and either way, are digging these bold hues.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted should any other red-hot numbers show up. What do you think about this one?

HOW TO COVER UP YOUR TATTOO FOR YOUR WEDDING

A local makeup service has got you covered. Literally.

Philadelphian Dana Persia had been a makeup artist for years when she changed her focus to bridal, and launched Beautiful Brides Philly at the beginning of 2011. Not only can she do both your wedding-day hair and makeup (she travels and brings the salon to you—including trial runs); she specializes in covering up tattoos, scars, or anything else you’d rather not see—on you or on your ’maids—in the pictures you’ll be looking at for the rest of your life.

Using a silicone-based waterproof makeup, she’ll get the color just right, then layer it using a self- perfected airbrush technique. Best part: Depending on the size of your tattoo, you’ll only need to add 20 minutes or so to your get-ready schedule on the day you say “I do.” Prices upon request.

AMERICAN HIKERS SHANE BAUER AND SARAH SHOURD GET MARRIED

Finally! Yay!

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/7/2012 at 3:42PM | No Comments

This past weekend, Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd, two of the three American hikers detained in Iran after being arrested on suspicion of spying, finally, at long last, tied the knot. Their buddy and fellow detainee, Josh Fattal of Elkin’s Park, was the best man. Shane had proposed to Sarah while they were in prison back in 2010, with a ring he fashioned out of loose threads from his shirt, a story that has made us well up pretty much every time we have heard it in the past few years.

BEST WILL-YOU-BE-MY-BRIDESMAID? CARD EVER

Posted by Carrie Denny on 5/7/2012 at 10:49AM | No Comments

Naught Betty bridesmaid card, $2.95 at Hello World, Philadelphia.

This weekend, we were running errands/shopping when we came across this Will-You-Be-My-Bridesmaid? card at Hello World on South 20th Street in Rittenhouse by Naught Betty, Inc.

We’ve seen our fair share of sweet, touching, lovely cards that ask the same thing—ones that are seriously so nice to receive from a good friend who wants you to stand up with her on that day—but this is just too good. Really captures the reality of being a ‘maid, doesn’t it?

Would you give this card to your girlfriends? Or would you stick with the sweet?
