What We Love: The Fonz

Henry Winkler loves the gays and loathes the Bachmanns. How can we not like this guy?

On a recent Sirius XM satellite show – The Six Pack – that’s been on our radar ever since Mo Rocca finally came out on it, former Happy Days star Henry Winkler (aka “The Fonz”) shared his thoughts on all the hullabaloo surrounding gay rights these days.

The very cerebral (and hilarious) Winkler was on the show to promote his new book I Never Met an Idiot on the River: Reflections on Family, Fishing and Photography. But when the hosts Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin asked Winkler about what he thinks The Fonz would think of gay people, the actor and author didn’t hold back (in a good way). “I think he feels the same way I do,” he says on the show. “I don’t think about a person as gay; I think about them as a human being.”

We can think of a few drag queens who have channeled some serious Arthur Fonzerelli vibes over the years, so this may come as no surprise to many of us.

Winkler – an avowed Lady Gaga fan who admits he’s in awe of her flamboyant footwear and that he really wants the pop diva’s John Hancock – also called out Marcus and Michele Bachmann’s so-called reparative therapy, saying, “Marcus Bachmann is trying to refurbish [gays] like sofas!”

Winkler’s also recently found a creative niche on Twitter, tweeting about everything from Steve McQueen (yum) to directing Dolly Parton (fabulous). He’s such a Twitter addict, in fact, that if you show him a little love, you shoudn’t be surprised if he responds to you.
