No Cake for Lesbian Couple

You have to be pretty hateful to forgo a business transaction in this economy just because you don’t like someone. But that’s exactly what happened in Des Moines, Iowa, recently where it may be legal for gays and lesbians to marry, but being a same-sex couple isn’t always a cake walk.

A local news station reports that Victoria Childress, the owner of Victoria’s Cake Cottage, refused to bake a wedding cake for lesbian couple Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers because, well, she’s “Christian.”

The couple met with Childress for a tasting. But rather than accept their business, the baker turned them away in what can only be described as a recipe for disaster.

“I said, I’ll tell you I’m a Christian, and I do have my convictions,'” Childress explained on the news. “And I said, ‘I’m sorry to tell you, but I’m not going to be able to do your cake.'”

The baker said her religious beliefs prohibit her from baking cakes for lesbians. “I didn’t do the cake because of my convictions for their lifestyle,” she said. “It is my right, and it’s not to discriminate against them. It’s not so much to do with them. It’s to do with me and my walk with God and what I will answer to him for.”

This woman has a pretty warped sense of discrimination, especially because since 2007, the state of Iowa has banned discrimination in housing and work based on sexual orientation. Who knew they would also have to ban discrimination – over butternut cream?

After the incident, Vodraska told the news: “It was degrading. It was like she chastised us for wanting to do business with her.”

We think that since Childress is so fickle about with whom she does business, that the good people of Des Moines should opt not to do business with her. It’s against our convictions to support a business like hers anyway.
