Chick-Fil-A's endorsement of anti-gay organizations has led activists to spoof ads.

In an interview with the Baptist Press, Chick-fil-A’s COO Dan Cathy admitted that the fast food chain is definitely against gay marriage. “Guilty as charged,” he said. And while he says he’s careful about calling his a Christian business, that he does apply biblical law to each of the restaurant franchises.

“As an organization we can operate on biblical principles,” he told the publication. “So that is what we claim to be. [We are] based on biblical principles, asking God and pleading with God to give us wisdom on decisions we make about people and the programs and partnerships we have. And He has blessed us.”

In the past, Cathy denied that the restaurant chain had a beef with gay folks, but this latest interview might explain why Chick-fil-A has donated upwards of several million dollars to antigay groups, including the Family Research Council and Marriage and Family Foundation. Both organizations tout reparative therapy as a way to erase homosexuality. And both oppose equal LGBT rights.

In recent years, Chick-fil-A’s presence on college campuses has been met with protest. One student at New York University started a petition in hopes of ending the school’s relationship with the food chain. And most recently, Chick-fil-A’s bid to open a restaurant on Northeastern University’s campus failed.

The chain also came under fire when it sponsored a relationship seminar here in Pennsylvania in which same-sex couples were banned. They were also criticized for anti-gay ads that were posted online.

“We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles,” Cathy said in the interview.

But when you consider where your money’s going, is it really worth eating a chicken sandwich?

  2. Grasshopper says:

Of course they don’t “support” gay marriage. They believe in the traditional definition of marriage. They, as well as I, have no problem with people that choose to be gay. I don’t agree with the choice but God loves people that make that choice just like He loves me. None of us are perfect and all sin. Just because they donate money to support marriages between a man and a woman doesn’t make them radical. It’s obsurd how all of a sudden it’s radical anti-homosexual activism to support strengthening marriages between men and women. How dare you Chick fil a!

  3. Anita says:

Talk about a seriously bad marketing move Chick-Fil-A. I respect all companies but when they do things like this it really pisses me off. If you don’t like it just KEEP QUIET! DON’T DONATE TO ANTI GAY GROUPS! Its as if they are turning into a hate restaurant chain. I’m not going to eat there ever again. Mark my words Chick-Fil-A will lose profit and workers of the lgbt community along with its supporters. They had a huge opportunity to just not apply themselves to either anti gay or pro and they just publicly chose a side! Pathetic and sad! If you really believe in God and his great works you would have extended the hand of love and friendship to anyone and everyone who goes to your restaurant.

  4. Steve says:

    “choose to be gay”
wow, it blows my mind that people actually think this way.. sad existence

    • Francesca says:

Just because they stated what they believe doesn’t mean they hate! Stop putting words in their mouth they have a right to believe what they want and uphold the traditional and biblical marriage standard. They won’t lose profit because God will continue to bless them for making a stand for what the Word of God says. God always blesses His children. Doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks.

    • Francesca says:

Read the bible. It is a choice. To sin is a choice. And homosexuality is sin

      • Meghan says:

the fact that you are saying homosexuality is a sin really bothers me. now forgive if I am wrong, but are aware of the many sins of the bible? one of such being wearing mixed fabrics. or that a woman must MARRY a man after being raped. please leave you ignorance somewhere else. homosexuality may be a sin, but if you are going to claim it is one, I would hope you are not doing any other sins. not even to mention separation of state and church.

  5. Sara says:

Are you kidding me? You actually think people choose their sexuality? Ridiculous. If God was against same sex attraction, why would he create them? People are ignorant. Another thing I don’t understand is, why did this company get involved with gay marriage anyways? I know for a fact I am never eating at Chick A Fila again. I hope others won’t either and join the protest.

  6. John says:

It is heartening to see an organization – especially a business – that stands by its beliefs and principles, even if it results in perceived loss of revenue. I always find it interesting that those advocating “gay rights” (interesting we never hear of advocates of “heterosexual righs”) preach tolerance, yet they are intolerant of those who don’t bow to their “beliefs”.

    • Francesca says:

God didn’t create same sex attraction! Read the bible! Chick-Fil-A has a right to their opinion. It’s a free country. Just because the gay community doesn’t like when the truth is spoken they throw a hissy fit as usual. They r the ones that hate when anyone speaks against their lifestyle and try to force it on others. Well, Christians are tired of it an will speak against what we dont agree with either.

      • Coconut says:

No, obviously you need to read the bible yourself. Read and understand the parts that supposedly say that homosexuality is a sin–read it in context. After that, then realize that nobody has to give a crap about what the bible says, it’s a story book, and you are part of the book club…congratulations. If you “believe” in the bible, you mus believe ALL of it–can’t pick and choose. If I believed in unicorns, I would be in the same boat as you–delusional. Don’t be a fool!

  7. Colette says:

Corporations serve the public correct? The public consists of all citizens correct? I have no problem with Dan Cathy or anyone else from the Chick Fil-A organization contributing their personal money to whatever organization they choose. However, to contribute the corporation’s dollars is opening up a can of worms. Corporations should stay neutral.

    • Francesca says:

Its a private company and the can donate to whoever they want. It is no longer a free country when u try and control where people contribute too and what they say. They have a right to their opinion.

  8. Sonya says:

I am very proud of Chick Fil A for standing up for their views. Being gay is a choice! It is not by some gene mutation.) It is by Satan himself and we have to always allow this and other biblically incorrect things to be socially acceptable. Not in my housekeeping! Yes, I will love the homosexual but No, I DO NOT
have to accept what you feel is “right”. I will continue to go to Chick Fil A. What I do not understand is if a company supports gay rights it is ok but if a company has the courage to come out against gay marriages they get beat up. We all will have to stand in judgement. One day EVERY knee will bow and EVERY tongue will confess that Jesus is LORD. I pray that you do not spend an eternity in a Christless hell. God bless you all.

  9. Rob says:

Wow! I am so proud of Chick-Fil-A!!! This is want we need more of. Businesses build un-wavering from Biblical principles. Our government could learn something from this and not letting homosexual activism dictate what is right. I am not hateful toward gay’s and love them as our Lord Jesus Christ loves everyone he created, but this word is turning into a modern Sodom & Gamora! We wonder why why bad things are happing to the USA, but by allow sin to fester , grow, & be supported, God’s anger is upon us as we see in the world daily. If you choose to be gay, I’m all for civil unions but marriage is only for one man & one woman. Remember, God made Adam and Eve “NOT” Adam & Steve! My prayers are for everyone will come to know God and people to allow him to remove the blinder Satin has on the un-belivers eyes & hearts. God blessing and peace to everyone.

  10. anahi says:

honestly this is pretty messed up. But everyone has their point of view. But Everyone is taking this the wrong way, even chick fil a; who cares if you with or against gay marriage. God loves everyone as they are which is the truth. He will not damn anyone who is gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transexual. God knew some of his children will end up like this. Instead of making a BIG situation out of this, we have bigger things to worry about in this world. Now a days they’re are so many iluminati’s taking over peoples minds, corruptions, deaths in this world; Satin is doing worse things. We need to start teaching, preaching, showing the word of God to those who truly needed. You all make it seem just because men are with men, and women wih women they are part of satins work. We need to start cleansing this earth

    • Francesca says:

What bible are you reading? The bible clearly states Homosexuals, lesbians, transsexuals, liars, murderers, thieves, fornicators, etc will not enter the kingdom of God.

      • Samantha says:

The Bible also clearly states how one should treat their slaves, when it is considered okay to beat one’s wife, and so on and so forth. Don’t pick and choose what parts of the Bible are to be taken seriously. I find it amusing, however, that you use your “Christian” values as a means of hate (that’s exactly what it is– hate and fear). If you are truly one of God’s children, it is not your place to judge, so perhaps you should watch that holier-than-thou attitude.

  11. TELL IT LIKE IT IS says:

Some say keep quite, don’t say nothing, i believe if the gay community has the right to go on parades and show that they have the freedom to speak what they believe, we that do not believe in same sex marriage have the same right to speak against it, and if a business like Chick-Fil-A does not want to support same sex marriage, it is their business who they support or not and there is nothing wrong with saying “WE DONT SUPPORT SAME SEX MARRIAGE” there are plenty of us(not same sex marriage supporters) to continue to eat chick sandwiches to keep this company in business. Relax same sex marriage believers and supporters, you have plenty other places to eat chicken sandwiches, just go to them.

  12. mandi says:

Thank u Chick fil a for supporting God and standing for what’s right!! If we had a restraunt here I’d eat there every time i ate out to help support you!!

  13. James says:

And Chick-Fil-A has gained a customer. The growing number of homo’s is getting out of hand, and now being able to adopt and marry? Wth is the world coming to? Genetic? I don’t believe that for a second.

    • Meghan says:

ugh I can not fathom how rude you are! I can deal respect your views on marriage, but once you dare say they shouldn’t be able to adopt and marry crossed the line. YOU have NO right to say what others can and can not do. being gay is not a choice. just like being black isn’t a choice, but ignorance is.

  14. Joan McGlone says:

Chik Fil A’s owner has the backbone to say what he believes and not back down. I applaud that! God’s best and intended design for marriage IS between a man and a woman (read for yourself about Adam and Eve!) but God is far more concerned with individuals coming to know him and desire to learn His truths. That can be lifechanging in many avenues of life including sexual orientation. Our local Chik Fil A overly extended themselves to job train several young adults with disabilities in our community- a different issue, but honestly, I plan to buy 5 chicken sandwiches for every 1 that is boycotted!

  15. PEG says:

I’m going to eat there on Wed. just to show my support for Chick-Fil-A’s freedom to run a company based on Biblical family values. I don’t hate gay people, but let this great restaurant chain have the values they choose (ones I happen to agree with). We have to give the gay right’s activists their “rights.” Stop “chicken pickin”!

  16. mary says:

1st of all, we all have our opinions, it’s fine to believe whatever you want to. 2nd of all, do heteros choose to be straight? No, they don’t. It’s not possible.
3rdly, i like their chicken, i’ll eat there. I don’t care who you are attracted to, it’s none of my business. Just like it’s not their business to care about gay people.

  17. mary says:

Oh, i should have added…do gays choose to be gay? No. It’s not possible. Why don’t people expend their energies on more important things is beyond me.

  18. George says:

Gay – not Gay who cares its your life but to all of you future “goose steppers” who believe that the US is now a country of right thought and right speak I hope you will be okay when some group turns its eye on you for daring to believe in something.

  19. Nancy says:

I will be eating at Chick Fila tomorrow. I think it is great that Mr. Cathy stood up for what he believed.
I wish I wasn’t so afraid of being ‘put down’ for saying what I believe.
I love the Lord and don’t understand why this world has to be so hateful.
If you love the Lord, you don’t hate gays or anyone else. You pray for them and ask God’s understanding about the things that are happening in this world. And pray constantly that this world might come back to keeping God first.

  20. Mark says:

I don’t care if you think homosexuality is a choice or not.

I don’t care if you want to boycott Chick-fil-A or support it because of what Cathy said.

What I do care very much about is when governments (be they local, state, or federal) start deciding who can and can’t establish businesses based on what their COO happens to think about gay marriage (or any other political issue). If the market rises up and puts Chick-fil-A out of business with their boycott, then that’s the price Cathy will pay for speaking out about that which he believes. Of course it was a bad PR move. But that’s not what drove his decision to say it. You’d think in this day & age when everyone is decrying corporate greed that a guy might be respected for putting his values ahead of the almighty dollar. Guess not…

So boycott all you want, but be careful about petitioning government to get involved, or your favorite establishment could be next if the other party happens to be in charge. This is a First Amendment issue, folks. We must be consistent in how it’s applied.

  21. venus smith says:

Just a question: Why are gay marriage supporters readying the “Baptist Press” anyway?

  22. ConservativeJerk says:

It’s rediculous how every liberal Tom Dick and Harry is making a gigantic stink about someone in the United States airing out their political views… Had he been bent over smooching Mr. Obama’s better side there wouldn’t be enough seats for liberal chicken and waffle fry munching. It would have been one thing if homosexuality had been threatened, but come on. I smell an ulterior motivation for the protesting, and it has nothing to do with oppression . It is an affliction I have deemed cry baby syndrome. The main problem they have is simply that someone disagrees with their views, and in the liberal tradition of being coddled from crib to grave anything or anyone that doesn’t give liberals their way is automatically deemed hate mongering or racist or fundementalist or whatever poopoo name that inspires dread in the politically correct American mind of the twenty first century. If it were REALLY a major deal you’d see more of these cry babies working towards equality in other fields as well, but who has time to help others when it’s so easy just to run down to the local restaurant and rant and rave before your favorite sicom comes on, giving the much needed smug feeling of standing up for perceived persecution and perpetuating the myth of victimhood that liberalism so desperately needs for ligitimization as a worldview. Way to go Chic-fil-afor standing your ground even after the bleeding hearts main weapon of Guilt has been deployed to no avail. It’s time someone takes a stand and doesn’t back down when the liberal mouth frothing and enviromentally friendly child safe sabre rattling begins. The spoiled child has been slapped on the hand, and the look on his face is priceless.

  23. I carry on listening to the news update talk about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the most excellent site to get one. Could you tell me please, where could i acquire some?

  24. Sarah says:

Did you choose to be straight? No. You were BORN that way. Just as I was born bi. Even if you do think being gay is a sin (which is completely wrong, anyway) this country goes off the constitution, not the bible. So, all religious mumbo-gumbo is invalid. If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t have one.
