How to Get First Dibs On the Goods at This Year’s Art For the Cash Poor

We’d all love to have fabulous works of art strewn about our homes, but who in the hell can afford it when you have to fork over a small fortune for even the simplest photograph hanging in a coffee shop? You can!

InLiquid‘s annual Art For the Cash Poor (AFTCP) starts this weekend, giving local art lovers the chance to get their hands on a plethora of original, local-made works for cheap, cheap, cheap. How cheap, you ask? InLiquid board member Brad Richards tells me that “we are really focusing in on affordable art — nothing in the sale is going to be more than $200.” And — hot tip alert — for the first time in AFTCP’s 14-year history, the organization is throwing a Friday-night preview party to give eager beavers an early crack at some of the most coveted pieces before the crowds swarm in on Saturday and Sunday.

The party, he says, promises to be quite the gay affair, because you know homos want to get their hands on the best of the best. There’s going to be live music, drinks for days, delicious treats from Little Baby’s Ice Cream and “I’m sure there will be a drag queen or two,” he says. “We wanted to create a block-party feel, not like you’re looking at some piece of art in a quiet museum.”

Speaking of art, he says everything from sculptures and ceramics to paintings and textiles will be up for grabs. “It’ll be a great way to expose yourself to a whole bunch of art mediums and styles … and know that they won’t cost any more than two martinis at a bar.”

Love that perspective.

The preview party is tomorrow, Fri., June 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Crane Arts Building. Admission is $30-$50, and proceeds will benefit Philadelphia AIDS Fund. If you can’t make the party, Art For the Cash Poor will be open free to the public on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Ticket links and extra details can be found on InLiquid’s web page .
