The Mazzoni Center and ActionAIDS Score Big Grants
The Mazzoni Center (MC) and ActionAIDS (AA) were awarded sizable grants this week aimed at funding exciting new ventures for both LGBT-community-serving nonprofits.
The Mazzoni Center is one of 17 beneficiaries to receive grant money from the Public Health Fund, a foundation that fosters regional organizations with a mission to “improve the health of the Delaware Valley community through innovative and effective public health initiatives.” The Mazzoni Center’s $10K prize will be used for its Women and Transmen Cancer Screenings initiative. Launched in June of this year, the program was founded to “increase access to and affordability of key health screenings and services for women.” Thanks to the Public Health Fund and previous grants, Mazzoni has been able to purchase special equipment to perform cervical cancer screenings for low-income and uninsured females from the LBT communities.
ActionAIDS — the state’s largest HIV/AIDS service org — was awarded a $9K micro-fund grant from AIDS.gov. The money is meant to help the organization increase its use of new-media tools in an effort to expand access to its HIV prevention and testing programs. “This grant is so timely in supporting our assessment and expansion of social-media activities that we believe are critical in fighting HIV here in the local community,” says AA Executive Director Kevin Burns. To accomplish its goals and to find out what forms of media are most effective for its clients, AA is enlisting the help of local, gay-owned social media and marketing firm Chatterblast.
