DO THIS: FUNDRAISER FOR TRANSGENDER YOUTH SUMMER CAMP

"Wet Hot Trans Summer" seeks to raise funds for Camp Aranu'tiq, a summer camp created especially for trans and gender-variant youth.

Not many childhood memories can top the ones made at Summer Camp — those rare moments when you could break free from your parents to take a mini-vacay with your pals. The lessons learned there are invaluable — independence, social skills … building up the courage to sneak a smooch in the woods — but for transgender youth, these wonderful opportunities can turn as bitter as a charred S’more. “Not many camps know what to do with trans youth,” says Julie Lipson, a recent music therapy grad from Drexel, who points out the gender segregation that invariably happens at these types of getaways. ”Isolation is a huge issue for transgender people, especially kids,” she says. “That leads to all sorts of other issues.” But thankfully we have an alternative. 15 QUESTIONS WITH PHILLY SONGBIRD SEAN THOMPSON

The local actor/singer is one of the stars in this weekend's "Full House: A Series of Cabarets."

Posted by Josh Middleton on 6/18/2013 at 10:30AM | No Comments

This week, local gay-run theater company Quince Productions kicks off its fifth go-round of “Full House: A Series of Cabarets.” The five-day festival comprises eight different shows performed by 20 established and up-and-coming singers from the Philadelphia area. One of those from the former category is the dazzling Sean Thompson.

Thompson, a full-time equity actor, has appeared in 40 shows, commercials and other productions since graduating from Temple in 2008 with a Music and Theater degree. For “Full House” he will be performing “I Need a Sunburn: A Solivagant’s Cabaret,” which he describes as a “very chill” evening where he’ll be singing songs that “I’ve just been living with for a while.”  Guests can be ready to treat their ears to tunes like “Raining in Boston,” “Santa Fe” and “California Stars” — all of which, he says, “seem to form a pretty solid theme of losing and finding yourself and of traveling.” If that doesn’t sound dreamy enough, Thompson is donating ALL of his proceeds to Equality PA.

Head over heels yet? Keep on reading for the Q&A I did with him this week, where we chat about his love affair with American lit, his loooong list of diva inspirations and a drunken run in he had with a certain member of the Danny Tanner householdREAD MORE

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: NUDE MINGLING AT SANSOM STREET GYM

Plus: The best Philly Trans-Health Conference after parties, a 40th-anniversary Rocky Horror Picture Show soiree and more in this weekend's gay events.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 6/14/2013 at 12:15PM | No Comments

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHT: This weekend is all about the Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference. You can check out the busy itinerary of workshops happening today and tomorrow afternoon here, but for this roundup, I want to focus on the parties. Tonight, you can do a veritable post-conference bar crawl thanks to a few shindigs happening when the Convention Center goes dark. Starting at 7 p.m., local activists and lovebirds Wendy Forbes and Tam Woodrum are hosting the VIP Welcome Mixer for PTHC at Tabu (200 S. 12th St., free.) Forbes says the affair is the official welcome wagon for Dr. Curtis Crane, who’s in from San Francisco to teach a workshop at PTHC. Good mingling and complimentary drinks and apps will abound. When you wrap up there at 9 p.m., you’ll have an hour to get ramped up for Original Plumbing‘s PTHC Party After: Philadelphia! at Bike Stop (206 S. Quince St., $6) This is your chance to forget about  networking and dance, dance, dance to the sounds of DJs Nolita Selectro and Average Jo. Don’t forget to treat any out-of-towners to a tour of the Dungeon. READ MORE

JUST IN TIME FOR PRIDE, 15 LGBTQ FILMS AND TV SHOWS YOU CAN STREAM RIGHT NOW

What better way to catch a break from the weekend's festivities than by catching a good gay flick?

Posted by Josh Middleton on 6/6/2013 at 11:15AM | No Comments

One thing we can be proud of/thankful for this Pride season is the fact that the film industry has finally figured out how to make a good LGBTQ film. And there are so many more of them to choose from! To pay homage to some of the best offerings from the past decade, Netflix has compiled a “Pride Guide” of 15 LGBTQ movies and TV shows that are available on instant streaming — a good option for the weekend when you stumble home in between parties for a little disco nap.

There are a few mainstreamers on the list, like Brokeback Mountain and Far From Heaven, and some indie offerings that have popped up on Philly screens over the past year (Weekend and Keep the Lights On). One of my favorites is Glee precursor Camp — worth it for powerful Tiffany Taylor solo alone. You can check out the entire list below, with links to each film’s screening page on Netflix. Don’t see something you want to watch? Here’s a link to Netflix’s entire catalog of instant-streaming options in the gay-and-lesbian sub genre. READ MORE

But do any of them have what it takes to be the next Britney or Christina?
