PHOTOS: HILARIOUS PICS OF PGMC REHEARSING FOR EXTRABBAGANZA

Check out the inspired dancing queens as they ready for their weekend long ABBA performances.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 5/15/2013 at 12:53PM | No Comments

If these rehearsal photos are any indication, the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus’s spring production, ExtrABBAganza, is going to be one fabulous, gay good time. But that’s pretty much a given when it involves a setlist full of ABBA’s greatest hits, right? All that’s missing is the ’70s, cheese-tastic costumes, and PGMC’s Paul Fontaine is staying pretty mum on that subject. All he hints is that dancers will “be in gold.” I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that there may be a pair of hotpants or six in the house. READ MORE

PIFA MY HEART: A REVIEW OF PRIMA! RUFUS! JUDY!

Gay singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright all but summoned Judy last night at the Kimmel Center.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/22/2013 at 4:20PM | No Comments

I’m still kicking myself for missing Rufus Wainwright’s Prima! Rufus! Judy! performance last night at the Kimmel Center. The much–anticipated PIFA show started with excerpts from the gay singer-songwriter’s opera, Prima Donna, then flowed into his re-creation of Judy Garland’s phenomenal Carnegie Hall show, which celebrates its 52nd anniversary tomorrow (April 23). LINEUP FOR LADYFEST 2013 ANNOUNCED

The three-day performance roster includes bands and workshops led by female-empowering artists from across the country.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/3/2013 at 10:21AM | No Comments

Ladyfest is returning to Philadelphia this year for the first time since 2003. Taking place in West Philly, the three-day arts and music festival is a grassroots event “dedicated to the artistic, organizational and political work of women, trans, genderqueer, intersex and queer people, as well as their allies.” Proceeds from tickets sales will go directly to women-in-need-aiding Philly orgs Women in Transition and SAFE Home.

This week, the schedule was announced, and it includes musical performances and workshops led by artists from all over the country — from New York (Attia Taylor) and Baltimore (Big Mouth) to Chicago (Blizzard Babies) and, of course, Philly (Amanda X). You can check out the entire list after the jump.  READ MORE

TONIGHT: TEENA GEIST ASCENDS THE STAIRWAY SYMPHONY AT PLATO’S PORNO CAVE

Plus: NSFW is looking for a few sexy farm boys and the Phreak N' Queer Festival keeps things rocking with the Homophones.

As you’ve seen on G Philly, there is no shortage of drag queens in Philadelphia. Each and every one of them bring something unique to the table — from live singing and one-of-a-kind costumes to just having the balls to let a little chest hair shine through. And then there’s Teena Geist (aka Mark McCloughan of No Face Performance Group). Self-described as “a wild young thing with a history of violence and a key to her mom’s medicine cabinet,” Geist performs in a creepy mask and, despite being a little intimidating (don’t believe me?), is wildly talented, incorporating storytelling, burlesque, cabaret and dance into her arm-hair-raising performances. TONIGHT: PGMC’S BIG BROADWAY SING STARRING CASHETTA

Plus: Ogle Philadelphia's first charm bracelet made entirely of papier-mâché food and more!

Over-the-top female impersonator Cashetta has performed all over the country — from Vegas to Florida to Rehoboth — but would you believe a lady with such a track record has never performed in Philly? That’s just ridiculous and it’s about to change.

This week, the singer/comic/magician/psychic reader is joining Philadelphia’s Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) for their latest concert, “Big Broadway Sing.” The show — if you haven’t guessed already — will feature a mĂ©lange of popular showtunes sung by Philly’s favorite gay songbirds. For her part, Cashetta will portray some of Broadway’s most iconic female characters, singing songs as Elphaba (Wicked), Maria von Trapp (The Sound of Music) and Annie (duh).

In a press release sent around by PGMC, she explains that this kind of show is like second nature to her: “When I was a kid, I would go to Broadway shows, then put my mother’s clothes on and stand on top of a console TV set and recreate the shows on my own. The fun parts were always the girl parts because they got the guys, and they had better costumes!” I can totally relate, honey!

“Big Broadway Sing” plays tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion (2110 Chestnut St.) Tickets ($35-$55) can be purchased online at pgmc.org. READ MORE

TONIGHT: STAND UP WITH SAMPSON MCCORMICK

Plus: William Way's juried art exhibition and a fish fry to benefit Philly Black Gay Pride.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 3/15/2013 at 10:05AM | No Comments

There’s no better way to start a weekend than with a good deep-down-in-your-gut guffaw. Lucky for us, gay standup comedian Sampson McCormick’s rolling through town tonight to perform his latest comedy special, “No Tea, No Shade.” The award-winning funny man/writer/activist/babe has a knack for taking on serious issues — everything from coming out to gay conversion therapy to the realities of the black, gay porn industry — and infusing them with comedy, reminding us that no matter how crappy things may seem, the best medicine will always be a good dose of giggle.  7 p.m.-9 p.m., $10, William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce St. READ MORE

TONIGHT: SINGING MORMONS IN THE GAYBORHOOD!

Plus: SUPERBass turns one and Team Philadelphia hosts a sporty mixer at Sugarhouse.

The Missionary Orchestra of Great Brooklyn is popping into town this week to perform its just-for-us musical, Mission in Manhattan: Big Philly Style. The one-act “pride play” follows three polygamist sister wives who’ve been abandoned by their brother husband in Philadelphia. With their ukes in tow, the three Mormon songbirds finally track him down at Tavern on Camac, where he’s lounging in the piano bar with his vocal coach Gerard. For shame! Can they coax him away from his new gay life to return home to care for their seven children? Probably not. Tonight and Fri., March 15, 8 p.m., Sun., March 17, 3 p.m., $20, The Playground on the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St. READ MORE

TONIGHT: SEBASTIAN & STOREY PERFORM AT RATCHET

Plus, an informative workshop at Brian Sims' office and Mrs. Pinklewinkle leaves the trailer park for a night of comedy.

Local gay electronic-music duo Sebastian Cummings and Ben Storey (aka Sebastian & Storey) are offering a sneak peek of their upcoming show, A Night Out with Sebastian & Storey, tonight at Tabu’s rad new open-bar party, Ratchet.

The preview performance will pull segments from A Night Out, which promises to be an even bigger to-do than last month’s Plugged Inn: An Eclectic Cabaret. Sebastian will dazzle with a “choreography-packed concert” that he says recalls BeyoncĂ©’s Super Bowl Halftime show, and Storey will perform with his “lo-fi, high-silliness” electronic band, Mixed Signals. There will also a “Grown & Sexy” contest to honor the evening’s best-dressed attendees. Word on the street is that high marks will be given to looks that are glittery and androgynous. Ratchet: 9 p.m.-midnight, $5-$15, Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar, 200 S. 12th St.; A  Night Out with Sebastian & Storey: Fri., March 15 and Fri., March 22, 9 p.m., $7 (gets you one drink ticket), Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar.
