THIS WEEKEND: AIDS QUILT SONGBOOK AT WILLIAM WAY

Plus: Vancouver online clothier Indochino opens a pop-up shot in Rittenhouse, it's Prom Queen GayBINGO! time and more!

Philly Poet Laureate Sonia Sanchez is performing at the William Way Center's AIDS Quilt Songbook.

Since its debut in 1992, at the Lincoln Center in New York, musician William Parker’s AIDS Quilt Songbook has gone through a variety of modifications —  much like the actual AIDS Memorial Quilt — and this weekend the William Way Community Center (WWCC) is sewing a few more patches into its evolving legacy. The WWCC remix (if you will), is being led by New York-based composer and pianist Gordon Beeferman, who has invited a handful of established New York and Philadelphia musicians and poets to perform, as he explains, “some older, some newer and some premiere songs.” READ MORE

15 QUESTIONS FOR MADDY MILAN

"When I filed for witness protection, a drag queen in Philly was the only spot they had, so I took the job."

Posted by Josh Middleton on 5/10/2013 at 1:00PM | No Comments

The first time I saw Maddy Milan (aka the quite dashing Michael Meyers), she was performing on a makeshift wooden stage at Tabu. She was dripping in diamonds, her hair was coifed like one of the fanciest Mad Men brunettes and she was strumming a toy guitar to some sweet little Dolly tune. The queen — some kind of Wanda Jackson-Joan Collins hybrid — did seem to be a little off-her-rocker, though. She just stood in the middle of the stage, eyes a little blank, head tick-tocking side to side like a Bobblehead on Xanax. Actually, come to think of it, she probably was on something, because as the song went on she started to disrobe to reveal a full-body nylon suit equipped with the droopiest boobs this side of the new LGBT Senior Housing Complex. She just stood there, swinging those puppies all over the place. The crowd loved it, we erupted in cheers that quickly turned to gasps when the dress hit the floor to reveal a stuffed penis that practically hung to her knees. I was a little stunned at first, but when that wore away, I realized I was starring at one of my favorite new drag queens in Philly — or at least the huge penis of one of my favorite new drag queens in Philly. William Way's looking to bring more women onto the team.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but William Way Community Center (WWCC) Executive Director Chris Bartlett is looking for a woman — a whole bunch of women, actually. But don’t get in too much of a tizzy; it’s not quite as scandalous as it sounds. READ MORE

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: LET’S TALK ABOUT SEXO, BABY

In the early ’90s a controversial ad campaign popped up in Philadelphia that had the gall to show a positive and oh-so-erotic representation of gay sex in a time when AIDS/HIV was still so misunderstood. SEXO was a wear-condoms ad in a sense, but it sexed up the whole idea with images of buff men covering their junk not with rubbers (cause that’s what they called them then, right?) but with shiny black latex gloves. It was terribly hot, and, as you can image, it got a few uptight people’s panties in a wad. READ MORE

I have no idea who this person is, but he's getting a discount at tonight's Pink Pub Crawl for wearing red.

This go-round of the Pink Pub Crawl offers the perfect opportunity to band together with other LGBTQers to celebrate this week’s historic marriage-equality hearings in D.C. In fact, host Nightlife gay is not only offering a discount to those who show up wearing pink, but also to those donning something in everyone’s favorite color of the week, red. Ticket holders will get a free drink at the first three stops (Stir, Icandy and Woody’s) and free admission to the expensive-ass final location, Voyeur.

Tickets are $25-$30 and the route will move along as follows: Sat., March 30, 9 p.m.-10:30 p.m., Stir Lounge , 1705 Chancellor St.; 10:15 p.m.-11:30 p.m.; ICandy, 254 S. 12th St., 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.; Woody’s, 202 S. 13th St.; and 12:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m., Voyeur – 1221 Saint James St.

TONIGHT: TEENA GEIST ASCENDS THE STAIRWAY SYMPHONY AT PLATO’S PORNO CAVE

Plus: NSFW is looking for a few sexy farm boys and the Phreak N' Queer Festival keeps things rocking with the Homophones.

As you’ve seen on G Philly, there is no shortage of drag queens in Philadelphia. Each and every one of them bring something unique to the table — from live singing and one-of-a-kind costumes to just having the balls to let a little chest hair shine through. And then there’s Teena Geist (aka Mark McCloughan of No Face Performance Group). Self-described as “a wild young thing with a history of violence and a key to her mom’s medicine cabinet,” Geist performs in a creepy mask and, despite being a little intimidating (don’t believe me?), is wildly talented, incorporating storytelling, burlesque, cabaret and dance into her arm-hair-raising performances. TONIGHT: STAND UP WITH SAMPSON MCCORMICK

Plus: William Way's juried art exhibition and a fish fry to benefit Philly Black Gay Pride.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 3/15/2013 at 10:05AM | No Comments

There’s no better way to start a weekend than with a good deep-down-in-your-gut guffaw. Lucky for us, gay standup comedian Sampson McCormick’s rolling through town tonight to perform his latest comedy special, “No Tea, No Shade.” The award-winning funny man/writer/activist/babe has a knack for taking on serious issues — everything from coming out to gay conversion therapy to the realities of the black, gay porn industry — and infusing them with comedy, reminding us that no matter how crappy things may seem, the best medicine will always be a good dose of giggle.  7 p.m.-9 p.m., $10, William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce St. READ MORE

TONIGHT: SEBASTIAN & STOREY PERFORM AT RATCHET

Plus, an informative workshop at Brian Sims' office and Mrs. Pinklewinkle leaves the trailer park for a night of comedy.

Local gay electronic-music duo Sebastian Cummings and Ben Storey (aka Sebastian & Storey) are offering a sneak peek of their upcoming show, A Night Out with Sebastian & Storey, tonight at Tabu’s rad new open-bar party, Ratchet.

The preview performance will pull segments from A Night Out, which promises to be an even bigger to-do than last month’s Plugged Inn: An Eclectic Cabaret. Sebastian will dazzle with a “choreography-packed concert” that he says recalls BeyoncĂ©’s Super Bowl Halftime show, and Storey will perform with his “lo-fi, high-silliness” electronic band, Mixed Signals. There will also a “Grown & Sexy” contest to honor the evening’s best-dressed attendees. Word on the street is that high marks will be given to looks that are glittery and androgynous. Ratchet: 9 p.m.-midnight, $5-$15, Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar, 200 S. 12th St.; A  Night Out with Sebastian & Storey: Fri., March 15 and Fri., March 22, 9 p.m., $7 (gets you one drink ticket), Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar. TONIGHT: IT’S OUR NIGHT OUT AT R2L

Plus: Hot Mesh at Tavern on Camac and get your Lisa Loeb karaoke on at Tabu.

Photo from last month's Our Night Out event.

Monthly hob-nob-happy-hour organizers Our Night Out (ONO) have thrown together a soiree tonight at the view-tastic R2L. Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (DVLF) will be hosting, as well as providing info on its upcoming HEROES event, which honors those in the community “whose work and leadership advances the rights of the LGBT community.”

The pairing of the two groups proves super timely, because today ONO announced its new partnership with DVLF. In the press release, ONO committee chair and DVLF board vice president Ron Lucente says the pairing will not alter upcoming ONO events, but he believes it will “provide ONO with a home to grow and develop and provide DVLF another outlet to increase community involvement through ONO’s varied monthly featured organizations.” Sounds like a match made in gay heaven. 6 p.m., free, R2L, 2 Liberty Place, 37th Floor.
