PIFA MY HEART: A REVIEW OF PRIMA! RUFUS! JUDY!

Gay singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright all but summoned Judy last night at the Kimmel Center.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/22/2013 at 4:20PM | No Comments

I’m still kicking myself for missing Rufus Wainwright’s Prima! Rufus! Judy! performance last night at the Kimmel Center. The much–anticipated PIFA show started with excerpts from the gay singer-songwriter’s opera, Prima Donna, then flowed into his re-creation of Judy Garland’s phenomenal Carnegie Hall show, which celebrates its 52nd anniversary tomorrow (April 23). William Way's looking to bring more women onto the team.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but William Way Community Center (WWCC) Executive Director Chris Bartlett is looking for a woman — a whole bunch of women, actually. But don’t get in too much of a tizzy; it’s not quite as scandalous as it sounds. READ MORE

5 GAY THINGS TO DO AT THE PHILADELPHIA SCIENCE FESTIVAL

A list of PSF events that have homo (sexual and sapien) written all over them.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/18/2013 at 1:38PM | No Comments

This scientist is making some sort of fabulous potion.

I don’t want to pander to stereotypes, but let’s face it, the Philadelphia Science Festival (PSF) probably won’t draw the gayest crowd on Earth — but that’s not to say it shouldn’t. Here, I round up five events from the 10-day festival that have homo (-sexual and -sapien) written all over them.

Analyze the full list after the jump. READ MORE

ALL THE RESTAURANTS AND FOOD TRUCKS PARTICIPATING IN DINING OUT FOR LIFE

A complete list of the more than 150 restaurants and food trucks taking part in this year's event.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/17/2013 at 1:27PM | No Comments

Dining Out for Life — the world’s most delicious way to give — is coming up on Thu., April 25, which means you have a little over a week to make reservations. This year, over 150 restaurants and food trucks will be donating 33 percent of that day’s profits to the cause. In 2012, the event raised more than a quarter-million dollars for local AIDS-fighting orgs like ActionAIDS, AIDS Delaware, Family and Community Service of Delaware County and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Let’s see if we can help them beat that number this year.

To make your restaurant-selection process easy, I’ve included the full list of participating locations (separated neatly by neighborhood) after the jump. This is a perfect opportunity to check out one of the pricier locales around town that you’ve always been meaning to try. That expensive bite will go down so much easier when you know it’s being eaten for a good cause.  READ MORE

DO THIS: THE DUMPSTA PLAYERS ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW PROM QUEEN

The local experimental theater troupe laughs and spits in the face of all of our horrible prom experiences.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/17/2013 at 9:26AM | 1 Comment

WHO: The Dumpsta Players

WHAT: Everyone has their own opinion about prom, but for most of us, looking back at the experience can be a little ick-worthy. Whether it was the fashion, the horrible hangover on cheap vodka or the humiliating search for an opposite-sex date, the whole idea has the makings for one big ol’ gay flop. READ MORE

MAZZONI CENTER ANNOUNCES 2013 ELIXR HONOREES

Three of Philly's LGBTQ community's "leading ladies" will be recognized at this year's event.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/15/2013 at 1:22PM | No Comments

Three  hard-working women behind Philly’s LGBTQ community will be honored at the Mazzoni Center’s 2013 Elixr event. Themed “Leading Ladies,” the Center’s Elisabeth Flynn says the evening is “both a nod to the outstanding women we’ve chosen to honor with our various awards … and a reflection of what we’re raising money for, which is expanded women’s health services at Mazzoni Center Family and Community Medicine. And the honorees are:

Dean of the Drexel University School of Public Health Marla Gold (pictured, right) will receive the big-momma Peter Mazzoni Award for her “pioneering achievements and contributions to HIV care and public health in Philadelphia, and her advocacy on behalf of LGBT health and wellness.” Since she became dean in 2002, Gold’s LGBTQ-centric accomplishments include launching the school’s Program for LGBT Health and an online LGBT health certificate program. WEEKEND ROUNDUP: LET’S TALK ABOUT SEXO, BABY

Plus: Leather clad mommas are taking over the Bike Stop and Amateur drag queens reign supreme at William Way.

In the early ’90s a controversial ad campaign popped up in Philadelphia that had the gall to show a positive and oh-so-erotic representation of gay sex in a time when AIDS/HIV was still so misunderstood. SEXO was a wear-condoms ad in a sense, but it sexed up the whole idea with images of buff men covering their junk not with rubbers (cause that’s what they called them then, right?) but with shiny black latex gloves. It was terribly hot, and, as you can image, it got a few uptight people’s panties in a wad. READ MORE

15 QUESTIONS FOR PHILLY COMEDIC STORYTELLER R. ERIC THOMAS

The local funny may weighs in on his favorite books, lemons and Beyoncé.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/12/2013 at 3:28PM | No Comments

Need a giggle to jumpstart your weekend? You’re in the right place. This week I asked local comedic storyteller R. Eric Thomas to fill out this questionnaire and when he sent it back I nearly suffocated from belly laughs.

Starting Sunday, Thomas will be starring in Quince Productions’ five-night run of (in)voluntary commitment, an evening of solo performances with fellow raconteurs Daniel Student and Jennifer MacMillan that, according to Thomas, “bridge the space between traditional storytelling and an evening fully realized theater.” For his part, Thomas will tell a story about bringing his boyfriend to meet his family for the first time. From there, the piece “zooms out to encompass everything from race dynamics in the gay community to a brief — completely misinformed — overview of global politics.” For more details about the show, look below the questionnaire, which you should totally start reading now:

What’s your Philly connection? Patti Labelle. I don’t actually know her — I only met her twice — but I moved here to stalk her. Well, stalk is a loaded word. I moved here to be close to her without her knowledge or permission. When are you happiest? All the time, really. Life is so lovely and we live in such an exciting, imperfect but progressive time. And this city is vibrant. And the arts are alive. And you’re as young as you’re ever going to be and older than you’ve ever been. I read a lot of greeting cards. But I really am happy most of the time. Except when I’m hungry, which is like every 15 minutes. Then I’m a real dick. When I’m in the mood to splurge, I … My big splurges are things like a train ride to Manhattan, a Broadway show and a steak dinner — these temporal things that stop existing moments after they come into being, but I guess that’s why it’s a splurge instead of an investment. I believe in treating yourself to experiences because they produce emotional dividends, which is a fancy way of saying, “things make you happy.”  READ MORE

LINEUP FOR LADYFEST 2013 ANNOUNCED

The three-day performance roster includes bands and workshops led by female-empowering artists from across the country.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 4/3/2013 at 10:21AM | No Comments

Ladyfest is returning to Philadelphia this year for the first time since 2003. Taking place in West Philly, the three-day arts and music festival is a grassroots event “dedicated to the artistic, organizational and political work of women, trans, genderqueer, intersex and queer people, as well as their allies.” Proceeds from tickets sales will go directly to women-in-need-aiding Philly orgs Women in Transition and SAFE Home.

This week, the schedule was announced, and it includes musical performances and workshops led by artists from all over the country — from New York (Attia Taylor) and Baltimore (Big Mouth) to Chicago (Blizzard Babies) and, of course, Philly (Amanda X). You can check out the entire list after the jump.  READ MORE
