FASHION: JOHNNY ANASTACIO WITH 6 SPRING STYLE TIPS FOR MEN

The sassy Kimora: House of Fab star says pull out the boat shoes and make a fast dash for off-neons.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 2/27/2013 at 10:15AM | No Comments

This year, model/business mogul/reality star Kimora Lee Simmons decided to get the cameras away from her personal life and turn them on the always-fab, mostly drama-filled haps in the office of her online fashion retail shop, JustFab. The new show, Kimora: House of Fab, features a whole new cast of catty, fashion-forward characters, including gay graphic designer Johnny Anastacio (aka The Drama King). If you’ve seen the show, you already know this guy is one of the best dressed men on TV. He can pull off any look — whether he’s going all K-Pop in urban gear and over-sized chains or keeping it low-key in preppy slacks and a button-down. So when I had a chance to gab with him this week, I had to pick his brain about what guys should be shopping for as the warmer months approach.

So, without further ado, here are Johnny Anastacio’s head-to-toe spring style tips for gents:

  1. Invest in a nice pair of pleated shorts that go slightly above the knee. You don’t want to wear khakis or baggy shorts. I think spring is a time [for gay guys] to show off a little more skin.
  2. Buy some good tank-tops and polos. [Gay men] love working on our bodies and we love showing off some skin, so definitely a few button-neck polos and a deep-V tank tops in bright vibrant colors.
  3. Stripes. The nautical look is huge for spring. Invest in a few pairs of Sperrys or boat shoes — slip on loafers are great.
  4. And a lot of colorful accessorie, like an orange watch and [stuff that's] neon — a neon belt even. Pairing them all together and layering them with a cardigan is great. Having a nice cashmere cardingan in grey or a softer, muted color would go well with all the bright colors.
  5. Also get pedicures. A lot of gay guys wear flip-flops with nasty toes. Get your pedicures and get those callouses removed so you can have fabulous feet to show off.
  6. And black and white is in right now. Not only are bright colors — like the sorbets and off-neons, but black and white is going to be really big, so definitely invest in some black and white staples and some off-sorbet neon colors.

Kimora: House of Fab airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on the Style Network.

A FIERCE NEW T-SHIRT LINE

Trophy Pony pays homage to Paris is Burning

Paris is Burning brought us all up close and personal to the outrageous drag ball culture when it hit the scene in the 1990s. Now, a new T-shirt line is paying tribute to Jennie Livingston’s classic documentary.

Trophy Pony has introduced new tanks and tees sporting some of the most famous lines from the film, like “First Time in Drags at a Ball,” and other creative takes on the people and places that made the film so great.

The Dorian Corey shirt, for instance, pays tribute to the late drag star with an Egyptian-themed King Tut graphic. In case you’re wondering, legend has it that Corey shot and killed an intruder – and mummified his remains!

It’s just one of many shocking stories from nightclub culture (hello, Michael Alig). And now you can wear it.

Okay, so it may not be the most tasteful line of fashions, but these and other Trophy Pony tops are ideal for the club kid in your life who’ll inevitably be getting his jollies at Voyeur again this year.

WHAT WE LOVE: MARRIAGE EQUALITY PENDANT

Wear it proud - and donate to an important cause

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 6/13/2012 at 12:28PM | No Comments

We’ve heard of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but thanks to loveandpride, you can also wear it around your neck. Earlier this week, the new Marriage Equality Pendant was introduced at a special event to benefit Marriage Equality USA. Not only does the sleek new jewelry piece express support for same-sex marriage rights – 10 percent ($39 each) benefits the organization, which has been on the forefront of the fight for equal rights for same-sex couples across the country.

The pendant features Marriage Equality USA’s logo engraved on military dog-tag-style pendants made of stainless steel. You can even have the pendant engraved, say, with the initials of you and your loved one for an extra $10.

“loveandpride has a passionate history advocating marriage equality,” says loveandpride’s chief designer and co-founder Udi Behr (we saw him last season on The Real L Word). ”We’re thrilled to help supporters donate to Marriage Equality USA by wearing activist jewelry that symbolizes how it takes two halves to make something whole.”

THAT’S SO GAY: GOLDEN GLOBES

The dirty on who won and lost - and all the gay moments in between

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 1/16/2012 at 9:50AM | 3 Comments

Last night’s Golden Globes started out on a very gay-friendly foot when veteran actor Christopher Plummer took home an award for his role in Beginners. In the film, Plummer plays a senior citizen who comes out to his son (Ewan McGregor) much later in life, after taking a much younger male lover and facing cancer. In his acceptance speech, Plummer said the film is “an enchantingly human story.”

Check out his acceptance speech:

Madonna (and her weird new Euro accent) also made an appearance last night, winning for the best original song “Masterpiece” in her new film W.E. Elton John also competed in the category for his song “Hello, Hello” in the animated kid’s film Gnomeo and Juliet. During her acceptance speech, Madonna poked a little fun at host Ricky Gervais, saying she hasn’t kissed a girl on TV in awhile. And frankly, we miss that side of the Material Girl.

On Jan. 21, gay men (18 and older) from around the country are being invited to audition in New York to be a finalist for the Mr. Gay USA competition. Twenty top finalists will be selected, and will compete in the first round of competitions, with a mere half of them making it to a cut-throat five-day competition. And the whole experience is being transformed into a new reality television series.

Jonathan D. Lovitz of 1 Girl, 5 Gays is hosting the show. Mr. Gay USA’s founder Jarl Haugedal and Michael Billy, a producer and TV personality who’s hosted PBS’s In the Life, are also involved with the new project.

“It’s an honor to be involved with this competition that represents a cause very dear to me,” says Billy, who wants to turn the competition into a showcase that uses “gay for good.”

The series will follow the finalists as they are put to the test during runway events, cooking contests and, yes, even political debates, to prove that Mr. Gay’s more than just a pretty face.

Think you have what it takes to be one of 20 smart, hot guys vying for the title? You could eventually head to South Africa in April to represent the country in Mr. Gay World – and you could also become the next darling of reality TV.

The first round of auditions take place on Jan. 21 at NYCasting Studio (243 W. 30th St., Third Fl.). Interested? Click here to RSVP for an audition time.

EVENT: DVLF’S TOY

For the kids in the HIV and AIDS pediatric unit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the holidays can sometimes feel anything but festive. That’s why for the fifth year in a row, Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (DVLF) is celebrating TOY, its annual holiday fundraising event on Dec. 3 (7 p.m.) at Marketplace Design Center. For every ticket purchased to benefit DVLF, guests are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for the children who will spend the holidays in the hospital.

John Moeller, executive director of DVLF, says each year the event brings together more than 400 LGBT and straight allies to raise funds and to collect toys for kids. “The fabulous night includes open bar, light fare, silent auction and DJ Carl Michaels providing the music,” says Moeller.

This year, special guest and stylist to the stars – David Evangelista, one of the nation’s leading hair, makeup, and fashion experts – will also be attending the event. TOY sponsors will get to meet the television personality during an exclusive VIP reception an hour before the main event gets started on Saturday.

Karen Gross, a local cabaret performer, songwriter, comedian and friend to the LGBT community, will also be performing live.

Attendees are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for a child or adolescent (ages two to 17) for distribution at CHOP this season. If it’s one of the only good deeds you do this year, it’s worth it.

“The TOY committee really pushed themselves to add new elements to the event that would further enhance our holiday fundraiser,” says Ron Lucente, TOY co-chair.

TOY, Dec. 3, 7 p.m., Marketplace Design Center, 2400 Market St., 215-563-6417.

EXTREME MAKEOVER TACKLES BULLYING

The show helps a family whose son committed suicide after being bullied at school

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 11/30/2011 at 9:15AM | No Comments

On Friday (Dec. 2), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will air an anti-bullying episode when the team of designers, including Michael Moloney, surprise the Walker family of Springfield, Mass. On April 6th, 2009, 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his own life. For almost a year, the young man had told his mother about many painful incidents of kids bullying him at school.

Two years after the tragedy, the family has yet to be able to return to normal, but they have focused their energy on helping others by lobbying for new state and federal laws against bullying.

“It kind of puts everything into perspective, stories like the ones [the show] shares,” says Moloney, an active member of the LGBT community. “It’s a blessing for me to be able to shed light on causes I believe in, to have the opportunity to fight for things I believe in, and have such a great time while doing it.”

In addition to the makeover, the show also offers a surprise by the Kardashian sisters and a performance by Demi Lovato.
