ENGLISH MANSIONS FIT FOR A QUEEN

A peek inside 10 Downton Abbey-like estates.

As a little gay boy, I dreamed of growing up to live in a great mansion. I imagined towering gold-trimmed ceilings and ballrooms adorned with chandeliers, and a grand entrance hall with a tall marble staircase that I would descend like Gloria Swanson at her most confident to greet my fabulous guests. But as I got older, I realized I can be just as happy living in a tiny Philly row home, and I can make just as dramatic of an entrance shuffling down a tight little flight of wooden stairs — especially if I step just so over the step that makes that damned creaking noise.

The gorgeous Grantham estate in Downtown Abbey, though, has inspired me again — not so much to actually live in a home whose electric bills alone would swallow Bill Gates in a year — but to rekindle that little part of myself that was overshadowed by a grown, more practical me. That’s why I wanted to share Flavorpill’s “Visual Tour of Grand English Great Houses,” in which they’ve gathered photos from some of England’s real-life Downtons — many of which still play home to a legion of earls, dukes and ladies.

Some of the most drool-worthy on the list are Norfolk’s Holkham Hall, the Palladium-style home that was home to England’s Coke family; Chatsworth House in Derbyshire has enough star power to earn itself a place in films, like 2005′s Pride and Prejudice and The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley; and Flintham Hall in Nottinghamshire is attached to a large conservatory full of exotic plants and trees. Check out the entire list here.

Celebrating a decade of silver-screen man-on-man action.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 1/10/2013 at 4:19PM | 3 Comments

It’s time to start filling up your Netflix queue. AfterElton just released their list of the 25 Great Gay Sex Scenes from Modern Movies, insuring we’ll be hip to all the best instances of man-on-man caresses, lip-locks and, in some cases, backdoor action that’s graced the sliver screen in the past decade. Not surprisingly, the list is mostly made up of gay indie faves, like Shortbus, the recent, totally adorable Andrew Haigh flick Weekend and Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds, but a few mainstreamers made the list, too. Michael Fassbender in Shame, anyone? Click here to see the entire list, and drop a note in the comment section if you have any to add.

STUDY SHOWS INTERNET-PORN SEEKERS ON THE RISE

Some findings: Lesbians score high, but Christmas is a total boner-killer.

The classy folks at pornhub.com just released “What Frisky Americans Viewed Online in 2012,” an important/hilarious study revealing that, in 2012, “pornography and erotica had tightened its grip around the American public.” Their findings?: D.C. is super horny (shocker!), most searchers love their lesbian porn (I’ll just pretend it’s lesbians who are actually looking at those videos) and people start to get especially itchy to Google dirty things right after the holidays (yea, that makes sense). Check out the rest of their findings below:

TOP 10 GAYEST MOMENTS OF 2012

From Obama's coming out on marriage equality to Pennsylvania's history-making political race

Obama says yes to marriage equality (illustration by G Philly)

Most of us are probably still recovering from the New Year celebrations (hello, 2013!) but as we look ahead to a fresh start and G Philly‘s third anniversary, we wanted to also take a look back on some of the most influential (and gayest) moments of 2012.

1. President Obama comes out in support of marriage equality. Not only is he the first sitting president to ever publicly state that he unequivocally supports marriage rights for same-sex couples in America, but he has denounced DOMA and pushed for legislation that protects LGBT Americans from discrimination. The Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also delivered a powerful speech denouncing anti-gay crimes internationally, and vowed to impose sanctions on countries that practice discrimination.

2. More states legalize same-sex marriage. Maryland, Washington and Maine have said yes to marriage equality in this country (the first states to ever endorse it through a popular vote), bringing the total number of states who recognize it to 10. Rhode Island also recognizes marriages performed elsewhere – and New Jersey is considering a new law that could legalize it this year.
