READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

GPFFL presents the Big Game Event for the second year to benefit Action AIDS

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 1/16/2012 at 10:31AM | No Comments

On the field, the men and women of the Greater Philadelphia Flag Football League (GPFFL) are serious about the game. Off the field, they’re just as serious about the community. That’s why for the second year in a row, the athletic organization is presenting the Big Game Event on Sunday, Feb. 5 (5 p.m.), to celebrate the Super Bowl at the International House in University City.

“It’s a great LGBT event to attend,” says Kory Aversa, a spokesperson for GPFFL, “with fun-loving people who include those who are football fans, music fans and people who want to give back to the community.” He says that last year, the event attracted not only the LGBT community, but also straight friends and sports fans of all ages. “For the die-hard sports fans, the 350-seat theatre provides the perfect setting to sit back, relax and watch the game,” says Aversa – with no shortage of food and drinks.

The event raises money for both the GPFFL and Action AIDS. Last year, the event raised $5,000. Aversa says the league hopes to increase that number to $7,000 next month. Donations from the event will help provide an array of services to more than 5,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the Philadelphia region.

MEET & GREET: SANDRA BERNHARD

She mingled with a private audience after the opening of her one-woman show last night

People were buzzing at the Hotel Palomar last night as they waited for Sandra Bernhard to make an appearance. A little after 10 p.m., she showed up after just opening her new one-woman show at the Painted Bride, I Love Being Me, Don’t You?

Friendly, even after spending almost two hours on stage, she was greeted by a small group of fans, friends and press folks who had no shortage of questions and comments about the new show, which spins everyday life with big issues of the day as only Bernhard knows how – and with no shortage of irony.

Jimmy Contreras with Bernhard

Last week, we caught up with her to chat about some hot-button issues. “Right now, I am obsessed with, as I call him, ‘Sick Rantorum,” she said. “He is a twisted, frightened, small-minded person trying to take away everyone’s happiness.”

When she’s not talking about politics, she’s joining Bravo as a commentator about all things reality TV. She told us that she’s made it her mission to get back onto television and to entertain more movie roles.

Motherhood has also kept her busy. “It’s the biggest commitment in my life,” she said. “And everyday [it] brings a whole new batch of challenges – and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Last night, the party welcomed quite a few LGBT friends, like Jimmy Contreras of Vlahos PR, Brittany Lynn (a.k.a. Ian Morrison), DJ Carl Michaels, Thom Cardwell of the Philadelphia Cinema Alliance, Meg Rider of G Philly‘s own advisory committee, and many others.

As Bernhard plays the next four nights here in Philly, don’t be surprised to see her visiting some of our favorite haunts. “I adore Philly,” she told us, “always have. Love the sensibility, the whole vibe. It’s a great American city.”

ARE YOU A MEMBER?

William Way launches new member benefits

The William Way LGBT Community Center has found a new way to encourage locals to become members of the center thanks to a new benefits program that has more than a few perks. In addition to supporting the center with one-time annual donations that start at $35, members now also receive a keychain card for discounts at 20 different locations throughout the city.

Longtime supporters may recall that the center had a similar program years ago that was phased out. But it’s been revived, says Paul Blore, the center’s executive assistant, to once again create a sense of community and support businesses that support the center. “We think it will create a lot of extra excitement about supporting the William Way,” he says. “We’ve even seen people taking pictures of their new keytags and posting those pictures on Facebook.”

Q&A: SANDRA BERNHARD

As her show opens in Philly tonight, she talks to us about pop culture, motherhood and more. By A.D. Amorosi

Though she’s made noted star appearances in film (Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy) and television (from Roseanne to Hot in Cleveland) – and is the quintessentially smart bantering guest with talk show hosts like David Letterman and Bravo’s Andy Cohen, it’s during Sandra Bernhard’s live shows that she’s most formidable.

Though most famous for the first of these genre-baiting productions, Without You I’m Nothing (also released as a feature film), Bernhard has gone on to several other equally uproarious live events like Excuses for Bad Behavior, Giving ‘Til It Hurts, Hero Worship, The Love Machine, Everything Bad and Beautiful and Broadway’s I’m Still Here…Damn It!

In her latest song and satire revue, I Love Being Me, Don’t You?, the out comedian doesn’t just skewer pop culture, she also looks at motherhood (she’s got a daughter, Cicely Yasin) and spirituality during a five-day run at Painted Bride Arts Center starting Jan. 10. We caught up with her as she was getting ready for opening night.

When do you know it’s time for a Sandra show?

It always happens naturally. I start off doing some smaller shows – developing the pieces and music and as I perform it starts to take shape without a lot of effort.

TITANIC GENDER BENDING

One man recreates a famous film

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 1/3/2012 at 9:50AM | No Comments

It’s been 100 years since the Titanic sank in the cold, dark Atlantic. And it’s been 15 years since the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet captivated audiences. Starting Jan. 26, Thomas Choinacky recreates the film on stage playing all the roles – including Jack and Rose – in Thomas is Titanic.

As he gets ready to embark on his own maiden voyage, we talked to the actor – who’s also the show’s creator – about what it’s like gender bending and if he plans on doing that famous nude scene.

What drew you to the Titanic as subject for the show?

As a child, I was extremely interested in the facts of the disaster. I read book after book about the sinking. Then the James Cameron film came out and it grew into obsession and I loved Kate Winslet. I watched the movie over and over.

The subject for Thomas is Titanic actually came up nearly three years ago. I was re-watching old episodes of the MTV show The State and there is a sketch where an actor does a one-man show of Jurassic Park. I thought it was hilarious and I wanted to do it myself with another film. I quickly realized that my one-man show would be Titanic.
