The study shows that 92 percent of LGBT Americans believe society has become more accepting, while 58 percent believe there's still too much discrimination.

Just in time for the Supreme Court’s imminent ruling on same-sex marriage, the Pew Research Center (PRC) has released its first-ever survey of America’s LGBT population — and boy is it a whopper. The study is part of PRC’s report series LGBT in Changing Times, and it attempts to measure everything from our views of social acceptance in the U.S. and experiences with discrimination to our behavior on the web.

The survey was conducted between April 11-29, 2013 and culled from a sample of 1,197 lesbian (277), gay (398), bisexual (479) and transgender (43) adults. The subsequent report is a massive 158-pager, so instead of dumping all that on you, I’m going to break down some of the more-important findings:  READ MORE

POLL SHOWS GAY MARRIAGE SUPPORT FROM TWO UNLIKELY PLACES

Two polls released this week shows that we may have some unlikely supporters on our side.

I'm lighting this candle for all the gay people who want to get married.

Two polls released this week show that support for gay marriage is sprouting in two of the most unlikely of places.

In a survey of 496 Catholics, Quinnipiac University saysAmerican voter support for same-sex marriage is inching up and now stands at 47 – 43 percent, including 54 – 38 percent among Catholic voters. … “This compares to a 48 – 46 percent statistical tie among all voters on same-sex marriage December 5 and reverses the 55 – 36 percent opposition in a July, 2008, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.”

After commissioning an analysis of polling and exit polls from last November’s elections, Freedom to Marry found that “51 percent of Republicans under the age of 30 support ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. The analysis also demonstrates that among Republicans who oppose the Tea Party, 47 percent support marriage for same-sex couples.”

The report also points out that “opposition [to marriage equality is] increasingly isolated within narrow demographic groups.” So in other words, don’t expect support be coming from crotchety, old, white, evangelical Christians any time soon. But we already know they’re a lost cause. See the full study here.

STUDY SAYS KIDS OF LGBTQ PARENTS ARE THRIVING, GAY DADS ARE EXCEPTIONAL

Findings show that gay adoptive parents are raising kids just as successfully as their heterosexual counterparts.

The study says "gay fathers, in particular, are extremely committed to parenting."

The U.K. government is urging more gay parents to foster and adopt following a study by the British Association of Adoption and Fostering that concludes gay parents are raising their adopted kids as successfully as their heterosexual counterparts.

The study, which chronicles the experience of 130 adoptive families (49 heterosexual, 41 by gay men and 40 by lesbians), showed “markedly more similarities than differences between family types,” says Professor Susan Golombok, director of the Centre for Family Research and co-author of the report, in an article in the Cambridge News. “The differences that did emerge relate to levels of depressive symptoms in parents, which are especially low for gay fathers, and the contrasting pathways to adoption which was second choice for many of the heterosexual and some lesbian parents — but first choice for all but one of the gay [male] parents.”

The study continues to praise gay dads, saying, “The anxieties about the potentially negative effects for children being placed with gay fathers seem to be, from our study, unfounded … Gay fathers, in particular, are extremely committed to parenting.”

Hopefully, with studies like this, we’ll soon be able to change the first sentence of this post to “The U.S. government is urging more gay parents to foster and adopt … ” How great does that sound?

STRAIGHT MEN WHO WATCH PORN ARE MORE LIKELY TO VOTE FOR GAY MARRIAGE

Posted by Josh Middleton on 2/5/2013 at 2:22PM | No Comments

Ladies, if you’re worried your man may be watching too much porn behind your back, please believe the LGBTQ community when we say: It’s totally OK! A new study published in the Communication Research journal says that straight men who watch lots of porn are more likely to support same-sex marriage. The reasoning, explains Indiana University Assistant Professor Paul Wright in an article in the Washington Examiner, is pretty simple: READ MORE
