VIDEO: DID CISSY HOUSTON ADMIT TO OPRAH THAT SHE DOESN’T LIKE GAY PEOPLE?

In an interview, Whitney's mom says it "absolutely" would have bothered her if her daughter was a lesbian.

Cissy Houston may be the reigning Queen of Gospel, but this week on Oprah’s Next Chapter, she showed the world that she’s also the Queen of Grumpy Pants. She sat down with the former Queen of Daytime to promote her new book, Remembering Whitney: My Story of Love, Loss and the Night the Music Stopped (sigh), and at one point Oprah asked about Whitney’s rumored love affair with Robyn Crawford. After croaking on and on about how she didn’t like Crawford, Cissy flat out says that it “absolutely” would have bothered her if Whitney — Queen of The Night (and of many gays’ hearts) — was a lesbian. VIDEO: ELLIE GOULDING AT WORLD CAFE LIVE

Footage of the U.K. songbird's free performance this afternoon in West Philly.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 1/25/2013 at 2:45PM | 1 Comment

This afternoon, U.K. singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding performed for a sold-out crowd at World Café Live for XPN’s Free at Noon series. She sang six songs, including “Starry Eyed,” “Lights” and a cover of Elton John’s “Your Song,” which you can see in the blurry-but-pretty-sounding video above. Local band Modern Inventors was her opener. The Philly group was there to promote their debut album, Cranes and Aeroplanes.

Goulding will return to the Philly stage tonight, when she plays another sold-out show at the Electric Factory.

VIDEO: BRAVE TEEN COMES OUT TO ENTIRE SCHOOL

In a class-award acceptance speech, Jacob Rudolph reveals that he's LGBT.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 1/23/2013 at 4:51PM | 2 Comments

Coming out of the closet takes guts no matter which way you swing it, but a high school senior from Parsippany, N.J. recently threw caution to the wind when he stood on stage in front of his entire school and announced he was an LGBT teen. Jacob Rudolph was given an award for Best Class Actor when he approached the podium to make his acceptance speech, saying, “I’ve been acting every single day of my life. … Acting as someone I’m not.” He continues:

You see me acting the part of ‘straight’ Jacob, when I am in fact LGBT. … Unlike millions of other LGBT teens who have had to act every day to avoid verbal harassment and physical violence, I’m not going to do it anymore. It’s time to end the hate in our society and accept the people for who they are regardless of their sex, race, orientation, or whatever else may be holding back love and friendship. So take me leave me or move me out of the way. Because I am what I am, and that’s how I’m going to act from now on.

Talk about inspiring. And to make the situation even more fantastic, the video above was recorded and passed around to LGBT websites by Rudolph’s proud father. Awwwwwww!

WATCH: AMAZING TIME-LAPSE FOOTAGE OF A WOMAN’S GENDER TRANSFORMATION

A thousand photos show a young man becoming a gorgeous young lady.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 1/17/2013 at 12:12PM | No Comments

I was floored by this time-lapsed footage of a young man’s transition into becoming one knockout of a young lady. The video — accompanied by The Beatles’ “Girl” — is made up of “roughly  1,000 pictures” that were taken during her three-year transition. The lady in the piece is only identified by her YouTube moniker, iiGethii. Her channel is described as a place for “art dumping,” and is full of other time-lapse vids of her sketching everything from dinosaurs and robots to female figures.

LAST NIGHT: #FAYMEPROBLEMS KARAOKE

Photos and a video of the cute boys and drag queens who came to the party.

Posted by Josh Middleton on 1/16/2013 at 12:30PM | No Comments

Had a great time at last night’s inaugural launch of the now-weekly #faymeproblems Karaoke at PYT. As usual, host Tammy Faymous (full disclosure: the boy version of her, Alexander Kacala, works for Philly mag) was a fantastic, foul-mouthed diva of an MC. She sang two songs before I left: The Fugees’ “Killing Me Softly” and Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good,” which you can see in the video above. Despite the dreary weather, the crowd was great for a first-time party. There were lots of cute guys and another sassy drag queen named Seven Supernal, who came decked with a plume in her hair and a glittery ensemble fit for some Mardi Gras-themed cabaret. See photos of her and a few others after the jump. READ MORE

WATCH: MILEY DOES JOLENE

We love her Backyard Session of the Dolly classic

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 1/2/2013 at 1:22PM | No Comments

Miley Cyrus has been spotted all over Philly these days – making at least a few stops at Woody’s, we hear – but before the pop star chopped off her long locks in favor of a much more butch look, she recorded this cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” for her Backyard Sessions album. And we love it.

Interesting fact: Dolly is Miley’s godmother (talk about country music royalty). Another interesting fact: Miley’s a huge gay rights supporter. Don’t believe us? Just follow her on Twitter where she regularly takes homophobes to task. You go, girl.

MUMMER’S DRAG BRIGADE MARCHES ON

Some of Philly's most popular queens made history on New Year's Day

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 1/2/2013 at 12:05PM | 1 Comment

Feathers, spangles and gender bending are certainly not uncommon to the annual Mummer’s Parade every New Year’s Day, but this year, a brigade featuring some of Philly’s most popular drag stars made history by marching for the first time in an official capacity. Led by Brittany Lynn (real name Ian Morrison) the performers received plenty of attention despite all the usual fanfare. And while the queens were initially criticized by an organization called the Philadelphia Metro Task Force – the group wanted to ban the impersonators from the parade –  the response from revelers and Mummers alike was nothing short of, well, gay.

LISTEN: XX’S LAST CHRISTMAS

A brooding version of the George Michael classic

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 12/21/2012 at 12:15PM | No Comments

We love us some George Michael – especially during his Wham! days when he and Andrew Ridgeley delivered classic sing-a-long songs like “Last Christmas.” Fast forward 28 years later and a new English band called xx have reinterpreted the upbeat tune into more somber electronic ditty with no shortage of love pains.
