THERE’S A NEW GAY PARTY IN TOWN

With QFest just around the corner next month, the city is bracing for a new LGBT party with proceeds from the kick off to benefit the gay and lesbian film festival.

Swagger gets the party started at Tashan (777 S. Broad Street) between 6 and 9 p.m. with “777 Happy Hour” specials – including small plates, select wines and specialty cocktails. Each month a portion of the food and bar proceeds will benefit a local LGBT charity.

“Our goal is to throw an amazing party that lets us get to know the local community while giving back to a worthwhile cause,” says Tashan’s Assistant General Manager Brion Pizzi. “Swagger’s first beneficiary will be Philadelphia QFEST, a renowned gay and lesbian film festival presented by the Philadelphia Cinema Alliance.” The festival runs July 12 to July 20 with dozens of screenings and special events throughout the city.

Since last year, Tashan has been serving up small plates inspired by Indian flavors in a swank atmosphere – and one that promises to welcome a lively bar scene. The hot spot even earned a coveted place as the Best New Restaurant on the James Beard Awards’ list.

IS PA IGNORING AIDS CRISIS AMONG SENIORS?

More on the new plan from the state's Department of Aging

More than one million Americans are living with HIV or AIDS. But among seniors who are 50 years and older, the number is mounting. In fact, Philadelphia has the fifth highest number of cases in this age group in the country. And according to a study by Yale School of Medicine, by 2017, it’s estimated that more than half of all people living with HIV and AIDS will be 50 years of age.

But the LGBT Elder Initiative has criticized Pennsylvania’s Department of Aging over a recent plan, saying it fails to address the disease, especially considering that PA has the 10th highest number of new cases in the country each year. And seniors 50 years and older account for 17 percent of cases in the state – and that number’s also growing.

The Pride parade kicks of at noon in the Gayborhood (13th and Locust). This year’s Grand Marshal is Brian Sims, the state’s first openly gay legislator. Sims won the primary and will be heading to Harrisburg next year. He’ll be joined by Grand Marshals Betty – an all women’s folk-rock band – famous for penning the theme to The L Word.

Also in the parade: Mr. Philly Gay Pride 2012 Rough Ryder, Miss Philly Gay Pride 2012 Isis Brooks D’Shey, and Youth Grand Marshals Phantazia Washington and Azeem Hill. Look for representatives from area organizations, bars and groups who will also be parading their pride along the route, which stretches through the Gayborhood, past Washington Square and down Market Street to Penn’s Landing.

After the parade, the party starts at Penn’s Landing with live entertainment, more food than ever before, booze and plenty of vendors. Please make sure you stop by G Philly’s booth to meet the editor and to pick up a free copy of the summer issue. We’ll also be giving away prizes.

There’s a family-friendly area on Penn’s Landing this year where kids can learn how to build birdhouses. Pet Zone will also feature an adoption area. Overall, there are more than 135 community groups and vendors participating in Philly Pride this year – and plenty of entertainment.

LET’S TALK ABOUT AIDS

How does a gay male 22-year-old confront the disease?

Posted by Natalie Hope McDonald on 6/6/2012 at 2:58PM | No Comments

He’s the famous gay airman whose coming out video went viral on YouTube. Recently, Randy Phillips talked to I’m From Driftwood about how his generation is dealing with HIV and AIDS. “I kind of wanted to parlay what little bit of attention I got from YouTube into something I think is a taboo for our generation,” says the 22-year-old. “Not very many people in their early 20s like to think about AIDS.”

Phillips is currently taking part in the seven-day AIDS/LifeCycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. You can follow the adventures via I’m From Driftwood’s Facebook page.

PHILLY PRIDE, IT’S TIME FOR A REBOOT

It's time to take Pride into the 21st century. By Robert Drake

The ad in question (courtesy of Philly Pride)

This year marks my 30th year being professionally involved with our local LGBT community, starting as co-founder and general manager of Au Courant newsmagazine back in 1982 – and I continue to be excited that Philly has several Pride celebrations each year.

Pridefest Philadelphia began in 1993 – in fact, I worked alongside the inaugural board of directors to help them take their first steps and I’m incredibly proud of the work we did during those early years. Pridefest Philadelphia morphed and developed into what we now know as Equality Forum, a week-long celebration every early spring throughout the city. Say what you will, but Equality Forum has helped put Philly on the map.

That said, I think it’s telling that there are even more gay-centric events – designed to be a bit more homegrown and homespun; focusing efforts on celebrating Philly Pride in June with the Pride Parade and festival on Penn’s Landing, and OutFest, a block party every October.

But here’s where I climb onto my soapbox.

Philly Pride does good work. It’s not easy planning an event of this size and magnitude. But as we get ready to celebrate on Sunday (June 10), why, oh why, must we (in a city home to a sea of exceptionally talented graphic designers and marketing companies) still tolerate poster designs and campaigns that are basically laundry-lists?
