End Quote: Works for Us

Today’s Daily Examiner quote comes from a Miami Herald online commenter responding to a bland apology letter police commissioner John Timoney wrote to the city in wake of corruption allegations. The former Philly top cop has been dubbed the “Lexus Leprechaun” by Miami papers after he spent the last year driving around in an SUV paid for by a local auto dealership.

Your Labor Day DUI Checkpoint Checklist

duicheckpointWith the unofficial last weekend of summer just a few hours away, many local Philadelphians plan to partake in copious alcohol consumption. Some will subsequently make the ridiculously stupid decision to drive. We’re not condoning such behavior in the least, but if you do make the big mistake, here are a few things to keep in mind when you get pulled over.

Sal Pal, Smerconish Kiss and Make Up

Salpalbookjpg.jpgLocal ESPN analyst and sports talking head Sal Paolantonio says his feud with conservative mouthpiece Michael Smerconish has ended, and this morning he was back on Smerconish’s popular 1210 AM show. The fight began after Smerconish and Paolantonio had a heated on-air argument last week, which resulted in Sal Pal’s banishment.

End Quote: Every Action Has an Equal and Opposite Overreaction

The Daily Examiner closes the day with these calming words from Lower Merion township spokeswoman Brenda Viola, who’s chosen an interesting way to keep her residents vigilant during a recent carjacking wave.

“A lot of times people hesitate — they don’t want to overreact. We’d rather that they overreact.”

Muslims Not Big Fans of PHL Security — and Vice Versa

Iqbal.jpgPhiladelphia International Airport was involved in an embarrassing homeland security incident last week when it detained seven-year-old Javaid Iqbal because his name resembles that of a 39-year-old Pakistani terror suspect. This was big news internationally, as it pointed both to potential problems with the U.S.’s terror-fighting policies and a possible profiling situation. But if you check with the local media — or even airport staff — Iqbal’s accidental detainment appears never to have happened.

Smerconish Writes About Point of Contention in Paolantonio Flap

smerconish.jpgOn Monday, the Daily Examiner reported on the on-air fight between Michael Smerconish and ESPN analyst and (former) frequent guest Sal Paolantonio that got Paolantonio booted off the Big Talker’s morning show. The nasty breakup originated in a debate about the media’s coverage of Andy Reid’s sons — Sal Pal claiming the coverage was fair, Smerconish stating it wasn’t. Today the talk show host devotes his Daily News column to that very topic.

Citizens Bank Park: Ground Zero for Brawling

beerfightlevel310jpg.jpgWhile last night’s Phillies/Mets tilt gave off the expected amount of tension that seems to come up when any New York team is in town — the shit-talking bravado between the loudmouth guy in the Mets visor and the loudmouth guy in the Ryan Howard jersey, the wimpy chorus of boos trying to drown out “Let’s Go Mets!” — the brawling in the 300 level was off the charts. It’s unclear if this was a direct result of things gone too far between rival fans or just another instance of the unrest that’s become more and more prevalent at Citizens Bank Park this season.
