Williams: Keep Schilling Away From the Phillies

1192541181The rumors about Curt Schilling returning to the city where he first flourished grow stronger, but some are a little less excited than others about it — most notably former reliever and current Phillies analyst Mitch Williams.

Williams tells the Daily Examiner in an e-mail interview that, while it’s true he doesn’t like Schilling, personal feelings don’t affect his assessment: “I know what kind of pitcher Curt is. And it would definitely be an upgrade. But how much are you going to get out of him, with the fact that he has been hurt? If I am the Phillies, I wouldn’t do it based on that alone. Then you add in the fact that he is a bad guy in the clubhouse, and there is no reason to add him. The one thing they don’t want to mess with is the the atmosphere of the clubhouse, and that would definitely mess with it.

“If he was still the dominating pitcher he was, Boston would have already signed him. [T]his opinion is based strictly on if I think [signing him] would make the Phillies better. In the long run, I don’t think so. If you knew he would be healthy that is one thing — they don’t. So I wouldn’t risk the clubhouse dynamic changing.”

Of course, the issue of the Schilling’s health can mean either all or nothing to the Phillies. It’ll probably depend on whether they send the physician who looked at Joe Borowski or the one who looked at Freddy Garcia last year.

I know a guy that goes by the name Meech who thinks bringing Curt back is a bad idea for the team. I’m starting to agree with him I think.

Just think of all the End Quotes he’d give you though.

  2. Montague Says:

Yep, we can’t have a championship-type pitcher like Curt Schilling on the team. It’s terrible watching him beat the brains out of opposing teams every October. And his fastball is even slower now.
No, wait! Isn’t he going for his third championship ring since the Phillies traded him?

  3. Jack Says:

It’s even worse than Montague suggests. Schilling is not going for his third championship ring since leaving Philly. He has three. He’s going for his fourth.
