When Foster’s seemed emptier than usual, we were a little worried. When their staff dwindled, we were definitely worried. When the shop didn’t open ‘t last weekend—we downright panicked.
Now, the word from co-owner Ken Foster is, “We’re doing OK, despite having to make the really tough decision to close the store after 15 years. We’ve moved full-time to our country house and 25 chickens have just joined us, so I have a great distraction while I decide what to do next.”
So, no more Foster’s. Not even a good-bye sale. Sad times. We sure will miss you guys.

Yes, it’s very strange! I went to the store four days in a row….Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday and they were closed. I tried calling, but no one answers the phone. Both their website and Facebook page are down. Several customers have left notes in the door asking where they are. If the owners are on vacation, or temporarily closed for whatever reason, it would have been helpful to at least leave a note on the door or change the phone message. I love Foster’s and hope they haven’t closed for good!
That’s terrible. I guess moving to Market Street and the economy was a real drain on their wallets. Very sad as they were real trail blazers.
Well i have a problem – just got a gift card for Fosters as a housewarming present – what do i do now? the website is down and nobody answers the phone
Foster’s was a really special and important part of the Old City business community and will be sorely missed. Ken Foster and his team created a store unlike any other in Old City – great homeware selection, eclectic gift items, cool cooking classes, and more. Foster’s had the appeal of some major national ‘brand’ stores but also embodied the local charm and urban cool vibe of Old City. I am sad that the store has closed, however I look forward to any new ventures the owners create in the future.
I am very disappointed as I too have a gift card that I can obviously no longer use. It would have been nice to have a little warning that they were going out of business.
So. So. Sad. Loved this store so much and all those working in it. Hope to see a new incarnation sometime down the line….
I was super annoyed that they didn’t give notification that they were closing – I have a gift certificate that I can no longer use. That’s just really poor customer service, even for “trailblazers.”
I loved Foster’s selection but echo the sentiment about AWFUL customer service. My husband and I are owed hundreds of dollars of wedding registry merchandise, which our guests ordered and PAID FOR, but which Foster’s neglected to order from the vendors or deliver to us. We assumed they were having trouble but are dismayed by the unethical business practices.
It’s a crying shame, my girlfriend received a gift card for $50. What is she giong to do? It’s unbelieveable and hard to stomach that cut and run was their only option. It would be nice if they would offer something to the people who are stuck with worthless giftcards.
Dito….We won an auction which included a $100 gift card. After learning from the web about this store, my wife and I were excited about visiting it. We were planning to go there this weekend and just found all of these postings. We are very disappointed in their action. Can you say “class action”? I will have to drive by and see if there are products in the location still. If so, they might be still in existence.
Great news! Foster’s is having a going-out-of-business sale starting this Sunday, August 22!!! Hopefully they will accept all of the outstanding gift cards.
So sad. Foster’s will be sorely missed. 3rd Street wasn’t the same after they left and I was thrilled when they moved back — even if it meant leaving their space on Market… it was so sad to see the Bankruptcy sign on the window today…
i was left with a giftcard too. that stinks!
