Without question, Avalon is one of the best beach towns on the South Jersey coast. Jutting a mile farther out in the Atlantic than other shore points, its cool ocean breezes and pristine beaches make for a fantastic family vacation.
That is, unless you happen to cross the Avalon Beach Patrol, who seem to relish acting like storm-troopers.
A case earlier this month illustrates just how out-of-control the Beach Patrol — and by extension, Avalon itself — has become.
As is the case with most Shore towns, beach tags are required. This policy has long irked the vast majority of beach-goers, who believe they more than pay the cost of beach preservation by the many taxes and fees levied on them. And they also believe, not unjustifiably, that the beach belongs to everyone, and no one should have to pay to use it.
Disdain aside, most comply. Incredibly, though, that wasn’t good enough for the Avalon Patrol.
Most days, beach tag inspectors guard the entrances to beaches, checking to ensure that beachgoers have tags.
On a recent weekend, a woman with three young children — including one with a broken arm — was entering the beach. Asked for her tags, she informed the 14-year old inspector that her husband had them on the loaded beach cart. He was 50 feet behind her, in clear view. The woman’s two youngest then sprinted to an open spot near the life-guard stand, where they always set up camp for the day.
No problem, since the woman and her husband had seasonal tags — just as they had for the past 11 years.
Or so it seemed.
As the husband approached, he showed his tag, and started onto the beach. The checker asked if he was with “that other woman.” Having no clue to what she was referring, he inquired what she meant. After discerning it was his wife, he showed the second tag (children under 12 do not need tags).
He had no issue showing the beach tags at the entry point, but stated his frustration over continually getting harassed throughout the day by teams of roving tag inspectors. These teams work the beaches, routinely awakening people, interrupting conversations and even demanding swimmers leave the water to show tags (many people have their tags affixed to bags or chairs.)
The point the man was making was simple. Logic dictates that if tags are inspected upon entry, then inspectors walking the beaches aren’t necessary.
At that point, the inspector snapped, “That’s enough out of you. Keep quiet. I don’t want to hear another word.” This, from a 14-year-old girl!
That attitude should be grounds for dismissal for any employee, but for a minor to speak to an adult in that manner is utterly unacceptable. This fresh-mouthed child was completely out of line as a representative of Avalon.
The man asked who she thought she was to speak to anyone like that, whereupon she made a beeline to the lifeguard stand and reported that someone actually had the “gall” to speak back to her.
Within minutes, four guards showed up in trucks, and began interrogating the husband and wife, while Little Miss Personality was high-fiving one of the lifeguards.
The Lieutenant — yes, they take that army title way too seriously — then proceeded to demand answers from the man, asking, “Do you think it was right to talk to a 14-year-old girl like that? That’s harassment!”
The man replied that the Lieutenant had not been there, took the word of one of his own as gospel, and didn’t even ask what had actually occurred. So much for due process.
At this point, the Lieutenant’s “backup” — a Captain, and obviously the real brains of the group — stated that he could have the man “arrested for harassment.”
How so? Because the husband had his arms folded while he was talking. This, he was told, “…was harassment. It’s a defensive posture, and I know about these things, because I deal with bad people like you all the time.”
How’s that for incoherence?
The end result was that the wife was issued a citation for $80. The “crime?” Failure to have beach tags.
Even though she had a seasonal tag.
Go figure.
And the icing on the cake? The husband asked for the names of each Beach Patrol member as well as the 14-year old girl, but was told by the Lieutenant, “No. You don’t need that information. I am the issuing ‘officer.’ That’s all you need.”
Interesting that he could issue the citation at all, since he wasn’t even there when the woman met the beach inspector. That’s like getting a speeding ticket from an officer who didn’t pull you over for the violation.
The woman took off a morning of work to fight the ticket, arriving at Avalon Court at 9:00 am, yet after two hours, she was told her case wouldn’t be heard until the afternoon. With a two-hour drive ahead of her, and a morning of lost productivity behind her, she reluctantly decided that principle would have to fall victim to practicality, and paid the citation.
Several questions come to mind:
1) If one doesn’t have a beach tag while on the beach, standard procedure is for inspectors to sell them a tag. How then is it possible to EVER issue an $80 citation to someone not having a tag? Do you fine black people but not whites? College kids but not “well-to-do” older folks? Where do they draw the line? There is nothing worse — and more dangerous — than selective enforcement.
2) What ever happened to the “customer being right?” Avalon would be nothing without the people who patronize businesses, buy and rent houses, and recommend the town to friends. So how could the town’s “bread and butter” be treated so poorly?
And as proof that this wasn’t an isolated event, there were at least five other incidents with this particular beach-brat inspector that day, including one woman who had to give her pocketbook to the inspector as collateral while she fetched her tag on her chair.
Avalon, like most governments, has laws and regulations on the books that make darn near everything a violation.
Games on the beach? Can’t do it. Throw a ball in the ocean? Nope. Have a gas grill on your deck? Don’t even think about it.
All against the law, but virtually never enforced.
Government should never have ordinances which are selectively enforced. This breeds contempt for the system and leads to widespread abuse by overzealous wannabes on a power-trip.
There are many good things about Avalon, but, as is always the case, they are overshadowed by the bad. The city fathers would be wise to eliminate all but the necessary ordinances, and start remembering who makes the town what it is.
The forgotten taxpayer.
Author’s Note: I have NEVER been one to use the media pulpit for personal reasons, which is why I chose not to reveal that it was Yours Truly who was involved in Beachtag-gate, and why I waited until AFTER the court date to write about an issue to which so many relate. In the weeks since the event, I have been (anecdotally) swamped by similar tales from Avalon patrons. The only way for governments to change is for people to voice their concerns, so please email me with concerns or thoughts.

I always get very nervous crossing the bridges into NJ. It is a frightening state to visit for one who is used to Constitutional protections. NJ is a Constitution-free zone. The police in that state put the Gestapo to shame. At least in Nazi Germany you Might have had the slim chance of a fair trial if you were arrested for a crime. In NJ the judges and police are all on the same team. An arrest by an police officer in NJ is the same as a conviction…..screw the taxpayers and instill fear in the citizenry. I don’t know why anyone would want to live in that disgrace of a state.
Chris, you should seriously think about publishing the names of all parties involved. Maybe next time they will think twice about being abusive jerks if there are actual consequences.
I go out of my way to avoid doing business in NJ or patronizing any NJ based companies and encourage others to do the same.

However, the greatest example of stupidity is from the author himself, who thought that airing his grievances to a juvenile, seasonal employee was going to get him anywhere in the first place. It’s like lashing out to your grocer’s check-out girl over the price of milk. She has nothing to do with anything over how things are operated. In this situation, I think, yes, you do look like a jerk.

I was in court when Angelo Cataldi lost his case for a similar incident. The head of the beach patrol is a man named wolf? They, the Avalon Beach Patrol and officer’s on duty patrolling the beach have a tendency to tell many untruths in court. They never even offered Angelo the option to purchase a badge. The story goes that Cataldi had seasonal badges but someone in the family went out to lunch and locked the door to the house, so he grabbed his chair and was going to wait on the beach. He offered to bring his badge to the checker once that particular person (I think mother-in-law) came back from lunch and opened the door to the house. Not good enough, Citation ordered by none other than Wolf.
I was actually arrested on the beach in Avalon for “Disobeying a Life Guard” The little 17-18 year old, ordered me out of the water, where I was sitting with my toddler jumping the ankle high waves. I obeyed his order, took my daughter to my wife, then asked the little man “why we were forced out of the water”? He got on the walkie talkie and then answered me with “my supervisor is on his way and he will explain that to you”. When a cop and Wolf showed up I asked them the same question, Wolf ordered the officer to arrest me.. (which is a mandatory appear in court citation, not actual handcuffs) I then asked, “Why am I being arrested, I obeyed, then was looking for cause of action”. I never raised my voice, all I did was ask a question.
On the stand the police officer stated I resisted arrest. What really happened is I asked Wolf, why am I forced out of the ankle deep water when everyone else was swimming up to their necks. (Side Note – unsupervised by their parents or the little men in the big white chare flirting with the girls on the beach)
Fortunately, Wolf and the Officer stated that they witnessed me disobeying the lifeguard then double tracked their statement after they had already testified that they were called over the radio on a disturbance. The judge saw right through their lies and reprimanded them for presenting improper facts. I feel they should have been brought up on charges for perjuring themselves under oath, or at least held in contempt of court and fined, but you know local favors and back alley deals amongst the locals.
Let’s face it the permanent residence of Avalon, NJ love the money of the homeowners who only visit in the summer, but actually hate the homeowners for invading their town.
Taxation with out representation. 90% of the property owners in Avalon, NJ have these homes as a 2nd home or vacation home. The 10% of year round residents enjoy a Fire company that is out of this world, their own fleet of vehicles that any major city would love to have and a senior center that was just re-done with our tax dollars and it was not necessary, Police Station & Court House with local government offices, that was just re-built from the ground up. Let me ask your readers, How many times to you tear down your house and have it re-built?. Why is the local government allowed to do whatever they want with our tax dollars.
The only way to get these little people out of office is to have a enough spouses of Vacation Homeowners change their permanent residence to Avalon, NJ. Then vote the little 10% out of every position in the borough.
Remember, the little beach badge checker and little life guards are given orders and procedures from their leaders to maximize revenue for a Borough that abuses our tax dollars. Their little leaders really want to drive the summer invaders away from Avalon, however, they could never support the Borough of Avalon without us!

However, life is not perfect, and Mother Nature annually erodes our beaches, for which the federal, state and borough annually spend many millions of dollars to assure that visitors have a beach. Not all towns experience the massive erosion that Avalon sees every winter & spring, but I’m sure they do have erosion also. All beach towns put a lot of taxpayer money into the beaches every year because the visitors support the local economy. If the visitors wouldn’t mind dealing with no lifeguards, don’t mind dodging dirty diapers, rotting food, trash, empty bottles & cans, etc. left behind by other visitors, perhaps Avalon and the other beach towns would not have to spend so much money on beach-related costs. Not having to pay lifeguards or buy & maintain the beach cleaning equipment and the personnel to run it, might then allow Avalon to have a free beach.
Visitors want a beautifully maintained, perfect beach, yet they don’t want to pay for all the work and personnel it takes to make it that way. Mother Nature does not automatically provide the beach in a pristine condition. She takes Avalon’s sand away each Winter and deposits it on the beaches at Wildwood and points south. Federal & NJ taxpayers pay for beach replenishment, local tax dollars and beach use fees pay for the cleanup and for the lifeguards and beach tag checkers. If beach users would clean up after themselves, there would be no need for beach cleaning equipment or personnel and no need for beach fees. If only it were a perfect world!
While I do not condone the teenager’s attitude, let’s address the writer’s attitude. It takes 2 to make an argument, and the writer is the adult. Perhaps he should have handled the situation in a more adult manner and not given her a hard time. She was doing her job, checking for beach tags, which are required and everyone knows it. Maybe the adults should grow up, accept the responsibility of having the beach tags on their person when they hit the beach to prevent such incidences from occurring. You have NO IDEA what these beach tag checkers have to put up with every day. If that were YOUR daughter checking for beach tags, would you be as arrogant? And you wonder why the lifeguards stood up for her when 2 adults were giving her a hard time over beach tags they were supposed to have visible when hitting the beach? Give them all a break and act like adults instead of bullies.

Wrong, wrong, you are SOOOO wrong! The issue is about governments, and the people who run them, being WAYYYY out of control.
It’s about selective enforcement, too. You know how many people in their 20′s in Avalon get fined for having a grill on their deck because their snobby neighbors don’t like them? ALot.
But do the neighbors get fined, when their grill is in plain site? No, no, no.
The hell with that. This is America, not Russia. We can’t stand for that kind of thing. How can you defend such a horrible policy?

You are getting fired up about teenagers who to avoid being fired or removed from their position, complete their job. As in any job, the taggers are required to make sure that all patrons over 12 have a tag upon ENTERING the beach. When their superiors discover they have not completed this task, they are punished by suspension or even expulsion from their job. It is absurd to say that a beach tagger is egotistical because they do their job thoroughly and with pride.
As guard10 stated, this story only reviews one side of the story and maybe if the other side was published in an article many beach patrons would feel differently. A job is a job no matter what it is, you wouldn’t allow someone to steal something from a store that you worked at, nor would someone in a restaurant give out free food.
As for issues having to deal with bike lights and such, are you really that bored? Its a safety issue. Do you complain about 12 years olds being required to wear helmets? or no parking in front of fire hydrants?
If you cant respect the rules then please relocate to wildwood ( its a quarter for 12 min of parking there).

I wld imagine that beach tag checkers hear lots of “stories” about where their tags are. Just wear it on your suit and it makes everyone’s life easier. The beach tag fees (daily, weekly, seasonal) are still more reasonable compared to many beach actitivies so I don’t mind paying for my seasonal tag.
I did have one unsettling experience at the Avalon beach that maybe wld have swayed others not to go there again.
Early in the seaon, I had lost my car keys at the beach and was fit to be tied! Trying not to lose my mind, I went to the beach tag office, beach patrol office and municipal bldg all in the hopes that they were turned in. The beach tag office was the only office who even offered some sensitivity to my plight! I asked all of the offices if they wld take my name/number in case they were turned in. If I were working at any of those offices, I wld have taken the initiative to offer this solution!!!! Liability is a cop out. There are ways to verify what is on your key set for the owner to identify them/proper owner of the keys.
After having no success with any of those offices, I then went to the three lifeguard stands near where we were sitting, hoping and praying, that someone had brought my keys to them. Again, only one of the lifeguards showed some sensitivity. He honestly looked empathetic and actually said, “I’m sorry”. One lifeguard actually glanced at me for maybe a second and gruffly said no and never looked at me another second! I hope he never loses his car keys. I wldn’t wish losing your car keys at the beach on anyone!
Despite having those responses, I still go back to Avalon b/c you don’t have to pay for parking and walk a mile to the water!
BTW, I did eventually locate my keys, rather my husband did, in the ladies room where I had left them. I did look in the bathroom twice before my husband actually walked in the ladies room on his own!
The only thing I can think of is some kind soul initally took my keys thinking they wld take them somewhere to be “found” (there is no lost and found at Avalon beach) but amidst my travels that day throughout Avalon, she must have thought that lady will be retracing her steps and will be needing to go the bathroom so she brought them back!!!!!! You just don’t know the elation I felt! Whoever you are, you saved a marriage and our beach day!!!!

No one is complaining about taggers doing their job. But mouthing off and giving Avalon a bad name is unacceptable. the now former head of BP did and said stupid things, and got canned. Being young is no excuse for not having manners.
And the wannabe cowboys on the Patrol? No excuse for that behavior either. Who are YOU to tell others to leave?

those in government understand, whether it be traffic tickets, fines or exercising a fundamental right, that by design, most hard-working citizens are too busy to incur the opportunity cost and fight the bureaucracy and consequently pay the “FINE” instead, whatever it may be.
My point is, it is planned, not an accident, you Mr. Freind and many other law-abiding citizens have been set up to fail by your own government or regulators.
For your readers :
I had a dream the other night I didn’t understand,
A figure walking through the mist, with flintlock in his hand.
His clothes were torn and dirty, as he stood there by my bed,
He took off his three-cornered hat, and speaking low he said:
“We fought a revolution to secure our liberty,
We wrote the Constitution, as a shield from tyranny.
For future generations, this legacy we gave,
In this, the land of the free and home of the brave.
The freedom we secured for you, we hoped you’d always keep,
But tyrants labored endlessly while your parents were asleep.
Your freedom gone—your courage lost—you’re no more than a slave,
In this, the land of the free and the home of the brave.
You buy permits to travel, and permits to own a gun,
Permits to start a business, or to build a place for one.
On land that you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent,
Although you have no voice in choosing how the money’s spent.
Your children must attend a school that doesn’t educate,
Your moral values can’t be taught, according to the state.
You read about the current “news” in a very biased press,
You pay a tax you do not owe, to please the IRS.
Your money is no longer made of silver or of gold,
You trade your wealth for paper, so life can be controlled.
You pay for crimes that make our Nation turn from God to shame,
You’ve taken Satan’s number, as you’ve traded in your name.
You’ve given government control to those who do you harm,
So they can padlock churches, and steal the family farm.
And keep our country deep in debt, put men of God in jail,
Harass your fellow countryman while corrupted courts prevail.
Your public servants don’t uphold the solemn oath they’re sworn,
Your daughters visit doctors so children won’t be born.
Your leaders ship artillery and guns to foreign shores,
And send your sons to slaughter, fighting other people’s wars.
Can you regain your Freedom for which we fought and died?
Or don’t you have the courage, or the faith to stand with pride?
Are there no more values for which you’ll fight to save?
Or do you wish your children to live in fear and be a slave?
Sons of the Republic, arise and take a stand!
Defend the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land!
Preserve our Republic, and each God-given right!
And pray to God to keep the torch of freedom burning bright!”
As I awoke he vanished, in the mist from whence he came,
His words were true, we are not free, and we have ourselves to blame.
For even now as tyrants trample each God-given right,
We only watch and tremble—too afraid to stand and fight.
If he stood by your bedside in a dream while you’re asleep,
And wonder what remains of your right he fought to keep.
What would be your answer if he called out from the grave?
Is this still the land of the free and home of the brave?

Parking is free so the town has to pay for providing a clean, safe, environment somehow. A pre-season seasonal beach tag costs a measly $18. That is 20 cents a day.
Who should pay for the lifequards who rescue countless people each summer? Who should pay for raking the beaches each and every morning and cleaning up the garbage disrespectful visitors leave behind? If you want a free beach go somewhere where you pay for parking. If you don’t want to pay for parking come to Avalon. You’ll pay one way or the other. The author is a whiner for bringing up this trivial incident that they could have easily prevented by getting with the program by having his wife carry the required beach tag. The tag checkers do not have any incidents with people who follow the rules. They are hired to inspect tags. Tags are required. It is so simple.
Tens of thousands of people flock to Avalon every summer because it has some of the most pristine beaches on the east coast. And the vast majority play by the rules and have a great time.

I will admit that if what the author says is true, this Tag Inspector may have been out of line. Her age has nothing to do with it, though. You should be equally as frustrated with someone who is older, so the continuous comments throughout your article and the remarks of those who commented on the article are unnecessary.
And you had ONE bad experience with ONE Beach Tag Inspector and have stories of other people who had problems with the SAME Beach Tag Inspector? Maybe you should think twice before attacking the Beach Patrol as a whole. There are MANY Tag Inspectors who deal with rude people every day and are perfectly polite. You are going to find rude employees in establishments EVERYWHERE, so why not write articles about them? I cannot tell you how many times I have dealt with people in restaurants, stores, etc. who are less than pleasant. Too bad I don’t have a column of my own.
Beach Tags are required in Avalon, and beach patrons, whether homeowners or renters, need to follow these rules. Beach Tag Inspectors are not mind readers. They deal with hundreds of different people each and every day, and they should not be expected to take your word for it that you have one. The PROPER way that Mr. Freind and his family should have handled the situation is: A) his wife should have apologized to the Beach Tag Inspector for inconveniencing HER because she was not carrying her own beach tag and B) his wife should have waited for her husband to catch up and produced her own beach tag. You know the rules, and you should not expect that they will be bended for you. Each person over the age of eleven is required to have a Beach Tag upon entry to the beach, no ifs ands or buts. And to the other people complaining about Beach Tags, if you were so careless as to forget your beach tag, you should walk back to your house to get it or pay to buy a new one.
And tell me this- if you and your wife were going to see a movie, would she be allowed access to the theater if she told the ticket-checker “My husband has my ticket, but he’s 50 feet behind me. He’ll show it to you when he gets here”? I don’t think so.
Also, not every street entrance to the beach is covered with a Tag Inspector. The Tag Inspectors are told to “sweep” the beaches to check tags. The Supervisors of the Beach Patrol also perform random checks to monitor each Inspector’s performance. If a Tag Inspector is found with people on his/her beach without beach tags, they are suspended. Again, the Inspectors are TOLD to check the beaches in this manner. If you don’t like this procedure, you should speak to a higher power.
And by the way, they are instructed NOT to wake people who are sleeping, unless the person is blatantly fake-sleeping to avoid talking to the Beach Tagger. If a Beach Tagger does wake someone who is sleeping, he/she is not performing his/her job according to proper procedure. And I feel so sorry for you that they are interrupting your ever-so-important conversations to make sure that you are lawfully on the beach. If you attach your Beach Tag in a visible area to your swimsuit, hat, or bag, you will not be bothered. I can assure you of this. Also, Tag Inspectors only ask people to get out of the water to check their tags if they blatantly get up out of their chairs and dart toward the water upon seeing the Tagger approaching.
With that, I will end my comment. I only wish a Beach Tag Inspector would/could write an article telling the story of the way THEY are treated on a daily basis. Then maybe all of you would change your way of thinking.
Why get so uptight over a simple issue? Bring your beach tag to the beach, sit back, and enjoy your vacation. Stop getting so bent out of shape over getting asked if you have your Beach Tag.
P.S. The Captain of the Beach Patrol does a wonderful job keeping Avalon safe, and he looks out for his employees’ best interest when situations such as this arise. You would want your boss to “have your back” too, wouldn’t you? Especially when the employees are “just 14 year old girls” who are expected to deal with rude adults all day long.

1.) beach tag inspectors do a fairly difficult job. They mostly work alone and have to deal every day with people who will try pretty much anything to skirt the requirement that everyone have a beach tag.
2.) They are mostly younger females, and to do their job effectively they have to speak with authority to people, both men and women, many times their age.
3.) They by and large treat people with respect. Yes, they call people out of the water, or wake people up, but as someone else noted, they are trained to do so only when it is in response to an obvious attempt to avoid showing a beach tag.
4.) The captain and lieutenants do tend to side with the tagger when they are called to a confrontation, but that is not unique to the beach patrol. If the regular uniformed police had been called they would have done the same thing. For better or worse, they will tend to trust the word of the government employee who has asked for their assistance, unless there is some evidence to the contrary. if you do not believe me, try yelling at a DMV employee until he or she calls the police over, and see who the cop tends to believe.
5.) The tagger needs to know that she will be supported. If the captain or the regular police do not back up this 14 year old girl when she has a confrontation, they honestly may as well fire her, because she will not be able to enforce anything for the rest of the summer.
6.) I do not blame them one bit for not giving you her name. Avalon is a small town and she may very well not want every beach goer who thinks the rules do not apply to them to be able to find her.
7.) She seems to have treated you with some deference. I am not sure if the rumor (posted elsewhere here) that you cursed at her is true or not, but regardless she actually should not have allowed your wife onto the beach at all until she saw the beach tags. It may not seem like it to you but by the time she saw you, she had already extended a courtesy.
8.) I find it difficult to believe that, after repeated visits to this very same beach spot, when a tagger pointed to your wife and asked if she was with you, you honestly had no idea what was going on or why you would be asked such a question.
Somewhat as an aside, your general complaint about tags is misplaced. User fees abound at all levels of government, and the user fees for beach access make perfect sense. When you go to the beach you are utilizing a very distinct set of resources and services, that in the case of Avalon are not fully funded by general tax revenues. It is, in many ways, a perfect situation for a user fee.
And finally, I have to take particular issue with the fact that part of your objection seems to stem from the fact it was a 14 year old girl who was demanding compliance from you. You seem to feel that because of her age, and perhaps her gender, that she should talk to you with respect. What you miss is that this is not a dinner party. This 14 year old girl is a government employee with a job to do. By August she has seen every scam in the book, and she certainly has earned the right to speak to you as an equal.
Where I will agree with you is in the charge. You likely should have just been cited for harassment, but not on the beach tag violation. I have a feeling that the harassment charge actually carries a higher penalty, so perhaps the good people of the beach patrol actually extended you a second courtesy that day by imposing a lesser penalty.

Writing an entire column based on how you and your wife were “wronged” is an example of why blogging will never replace good reporting.
This column is a one sided, immature rant full of inference, generalizations, and bias.
Whine, my wife has her arm in a cast. Whine, we have season beach tags. Whine, they talked mean to me. Whine, we didn’t do anything wrong and they ganged up on me. Whine, no one likes beach tags. Whine, everyone thinks the beaches should be free. Whine, I waited to write about this until it was settled.
Give me a break.

Clearly they are mounting a desperate effort to hit the “dislike” key, and are now engaging in personal attacks and getting off subject by commenting on things that just weren’t in the article.
Which makes sense, I guess, from their perspective. Because they know they and their thug tactics are wrong, and they can’t sell it. lassic bait and switch.
But the people have spoken, and you hacks can’t hide! Onward!!!
September 1st, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Secondly, for all of those people who put a negative comment, are you telling me that if a 14 year old got in your face (which they do in Ocean City too and sometimes wake you out of sound sleep) that you would not be frustrated.
Thirdly, let’s be honest. This whole situation was blown way out of proportion by the beach tagger and beach patrol. They are looking to make examples out of people. I have a brother who is a police officer, so I am all for law enforcement, but a good enforcer hears both sides of the story. CLEARLY, the family had tags. CLEARLY, the beach tagger was mistaken. Clearly, she was on a power trip. Who High Fives their coworker when getting someone else in trouble? Let’s be real.
Fourthly, I think another travesty of this situation is that the children had to witness all of this. Chris is not whining about the amount of things he had to carry, or the broken arm etc. He was merely setting the scene and trying to emphasize they were just trying to get to the beach (With tags they paid for) and had more obstacles then usual.
Fifthly, I find it amusing that in the 27 years I have been going to the shore (where I have worked and visited the beaches of OC, Sea Isle, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Strathmere, Cape May,) that 99% of people I know complain about Beach Tags and 100% complain about the manner in which the Beach Tags are checked yet there are so many dislikes on this article. Furthermore, the arguments against it either are a. fabrications, b. don’t make sense or c. are personally attacking the writer (is that the best you can do?)
To the 18 dislikers, write a comment with some validity and maybe verify that you are not connected to the Avalon lifeguards, Beach Patrol, or government in some way.

a few weeks ago i walked onto the beach with my mom and sister. I showed the beach tag girl my bag(where my beach tag was) and she stopped me saying that it was last years bag. I had realized i had made a mistake and said sorry about that, my mother is 10 paces behind me and has at least 8 season beach tags. Well my mom shows her our lanyard with the tags on it and the inspector says, “hmph well ya look at that, you dont have 8 tags because half of those are last years!” my mom than counted this years tag up to 8. The inspector than said rolling her eyes and in a sarcastic tone, “well than have a nice day!”
Another day our friends came down for a day trip and didn’t buy beach tags. So when they were confronted by the inspector she made them by 4. Well a few minutes later my aunt informed them that you only had to buy tags for people 13 and up and our friends had to 8 and 10 year old children. She then went up to the inspector explaining the circumstances and the beach tagger exclaimed “absolutely no refunds!”
Again we understand that everyone should have beach tags to keep our beaches clean, but this should be dealt with in a more kind, respectful manner. So Chris I understand where your coming from and many other people do also.

I’m in Avalon right now for 2 weeks and these lifeguards are out of line. I’ve seen multiple incidents of them screaming and cursing at fathers with children on their arms for being up to their KNEES in water. Its the freakin Jersey shore, where waves max out at 3 feet on a rough day. These trust fund baby lifeguard smarta**es need to chill out.

I want you to sit on a lifeguard stand or beach tag check for a day. Then you can talk. There are rules and the lifeguards enforce them. Some might not make a whole lot of sense but they didn’t make them. Also, I suggest you should look at the wave forecast for the next couple weeks. Hurricane surf is expected… you also missed the solid week of high surf, rip tides, and undertow in which there were problems that the guards handled very well. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about. The summer is a long one…2 weeks isn’t nearly enough time to start passing judgements.
P.S. Many of the lifeguards families struggle to put them through college. Sure, there are some kids who are loaded… but there’s just as many who need every cent they make to help their families out.
Think before you share you’re incredibly wise thoughts….’smarta**’

And as far as her children running ahead of her ? What parent hasn’t had that happen? Unexpected situations happen. Are public “servants” THAT inflexible, and do they have NO common sense?
While I agree that there are 2 sides to every story, there are enough accounts here and elsewhere that suggest that the 14-year old clearly copped an attitude rather than try to understand the situation. What would be expected?
Rational and reasonable behavior, which is clearly lacking. In my opinion, if Chris’s wife has a medical condition, she might even have a lawsuit on her hands.
As adults, we are all teachers, which can be challenging in a world that continues to breed selfishness and disrespect at every turn. I believe that he was trying to actually help this child out…not by scolding her, but helping her realize that you won’t go far in life as an aloof, disrespectful soul.
It is our responsibility to be the change we seek. And, whatever happened to being compassionate and caring about other people? There are still those of us out here that believe that this is our life’s work. Pay it forward.
For those of you who have commented most recently, perhaps it would help if you had such teachers…mainly because none of you can actually read (or write for that matter)! Chris did not need to buy a tag…he openly states in the article that he had a season tag and it was, in fact in his possession that day….as was his wife’s.
And who said anything about not following the rules? READ WHAT IS WRITTEN!!! He plainly said he had FOLLOWED THE RULES by buying seasonal tags for the past 11 years! How is that not complying?
But selective enforcement of the rules (these are actually laws, folks) is not acceptable – ever. You may think it is a small matter here, but it opens the door to major violations of our rights. That is discrimination and is often used in a retaliatory way by governments (and their employees).
Selective enforcement at ALL levels is wrong and inexcusable in this country. People should sue when they are discriminated against by such governmental weapons.
There is a story here about flexibility and common sense…2 things that this article plainly states are rapidly disappearing from our society – because we don’t stand up for we believe in and we continue to follow government who certainly does not have our best interests at heart.
They are too busy feeling important and lining their pockets. As the Avalon beach washes away, instead of pumping sand in, how about if we just put up an iron curtain?

the woman went on the beach without a tag. she probably admitted that during questioning by the issuing officer. therefore she admitted to being on the beach at some point without the proper beach tag. that means she was guilty. tough. deal with it and grow up. it doesn’t take law school to figure that one out. as lizzie said…there’s another side to this story. they probably got off easy with just a citation for not having a tag

Moreover, there is precisely zero evidence that Chris’ wife had a condition that warranted any kind of public accommodation. She went to the beach, with at least one kid (Chris’ story is truly beginning to unravel here as the posts keep coming in, so we’re not even sure how many children were there) and was clearly well enough to be ahead of her husband. Finally, even if there were a medical condition, there is no legal requirement that those with medical conditions be free from having to abide with basic requirements like having a beach tag.
Maybe I am missing something. I would love to hear your legal theory on this.
September 1st, 2010 at 5:52 pm
considering i was on the beach this day i saw it all.
The tagger actually asked the wife to stay on the beach and wait for her husband to avoid these types of problems. Of course she wouldnt listen because she believes that the tagger APPEARS to be “”14″”
(how are you gonna say she is 14 you didnt even know her name…….)
so she continued disobeying the law and continues down to the beach. GIVING THE WOMEN- benefit of the doubt-, she waits for the husband. WHEN SHE ASKED THE HUSBAND to show the tags.. i have never seen such a rude man in my life by the way.. he yelled at her immediately and refused to even show the tags! Knowing that he had walked all over her she went to tell the lifeguard, for help! the lifeguards have radios to call down to the beach house, as the taggers dont.. which means they HAVE to go to the lifeguard when there is an issue.
which is why i know the high fiving is just a way to make the story sound better..
I know this is the truth because i was there and spoke with the tagger moments after. AND the lieutenants were very patient actually until the man started pointing fingers at them… funny how the story can change so much!
go av taggers keep doing what your doing! ((((your job))))))))))
oh ps. AV GIRL… also a completely false story but i wont get into that right now.
av beach patrol is organized and the best patrol you’ll ever encounter. and 15th street

First of all, it’s a shame you have nothing better to do than bash a 14 yr old girl for simply doing her job. Second of all, I gotta say I love people like you who think that everyone else in the world needs to follow the rules EXCEPPTTTT for YOU! Do you honestly think that you and you’re family are the only ones that accidently didn’t have tags when asked by the tagger? If these taggers had a penny for every excuse and story they get told as to why a person doesn’t have their tag on them that day, they’d all be millionaires. The beach tag system is really not that hard to understand. Each person on the beach must have a tag. Soooo whether youre tag is 50 ft away or in alabama, it really doesn’t matter because you don’t have a tag to get on the beach. If the taggers made exceptions for you, then it would defeat the purpose of the system all together. So sorry that you feel so special and above the rest of the people in town, but the rules remain the same for everyone. You’re a grown man and a father; you should know this. Do you tell cashiers at stores that you left your money with your wife and that she’ll come to the store shortly to pay your bill? That’s never seemed to work for me, but for someone as special as yourself I bet it would. Must be nice to be so superior to the rest of the world.
And you say you’re writing this article because you’re goal is to get more people to bitch, I mean voice their opinion, so that you can change the beach tag rule? Okay well in that case you clearly are not an Avalon resident; if you were, then you would realize how drastically different the environment would be on the beach if beachgoers were not required to have tags. Big deal you have to pay 25$ for a whole summer on the beach. If you don’t like it, go to Wildwood and enjoy all the trash thrown everywhere and the bums sleeping next to you. No one in Avalon is losing any sleep over dumbasses like you not coming back to our beaches. We thank you for not returning and encourage all others like you to do the same.
Happy blogging Chris!!
September 1st, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Not just because of this story, but the scores of tales coming in, finally finding a place to air their complaints. So many simply cannot be wrong. Or ignored. And that is the big problem now facing Avalon.
So now we have 2 “eyewitnesses” who saw “everything” and, lo and behold, attack, attack attack – that it’s all a lie! Everything is a lie! (except their “version”) But their attempts at the “truth” are blown away by their inconcsistencies and obvious connections to the beach patrol.
And is just coincidence that the people who saw the “real deal” are conveniently blabbing now, after the deluge of stories just keeps coming and 80+ comments, 10-1 against the govt stormtroopers? They would have been better keeping quiet, since they have no credibility.
How did he know she was 14, “Avalon Local”? Well, if you read the article, you would have read that it was the lietenant who said that she was 14, not the writer “lying” about it.
One kid? Yeah, he’s going to lie about how many kids he has. Makes perfect sense. And yeah, I’m sure he didn’t show his seasonal tags that he had for 11 years (Again- read the article) but just picked this day to be rude to this “SWEETEST girl you would ever want to meet (thanks, Mom!).”
Cause that’s what people do entering the beach. GIve us a break!
Don’t make us puke with your ludicrous fantasies, “Avalon Local.”
And Waist Deep, you too can’t read or write. Even if she didn’t have a tag, why wasn’t she offered the opportunity to pay 6 bucks for a daily tag? WHY? Because some jackass punk didn’t like her or her attitude? Either fine everyone $80, or offer all the chance to buy a $6 tag. Not both. That’s selective enforcement, that’s discrimination, that sucks! And it should be stopped at all levels of govt, but hasn’t been, which is why govt is so outlandish. THAT IS THE POINT OF THIS ARTICLE THAT YOU ARE MISSING. But people like you think of us as your enemy. And that is Warped and dangerous.
And yes, “Avalon Local”, back to you. In addition to accusing the writer of lying, the wife lying, and their kids lying, you also take odds with other commenters that they too are lying (“15th Street” and “Av Girl”) while defending the Captain. NO CREDIBILITY WHATSOEVER. I’m surprised you didn’t blame George W. Bush and Obama too for lying in this case.
This is the problem with govt and its insulated bureaucrats. They STILL can’t see the problem, and will never change. They feel entitled to do whatever they please, and also feel they have the resources and manpower to intimidate and wear down the citizens who pay for—— absolutely everything.
That is why there is a massive change coming in this country.
Folks- Let’s Keep the TRUE stories coming about abuse of citizens, and don’t be afraid of the powertrippers trumped up lies and smear. It’s what rats do!
PS- The vast majority of the comments are in agreement with the author, yet somehow the dislikes are now ahead of the likes for the article. Play fair Avalonians- only one vote per snob!

Bottom line- the Beach Patrol messed up. Big time. And moron, of course he was bringing his wife’s chair. I happen to know she is scheduled for major back surgery and can’t carry anything.
It’s really a simple scenario. What’s the proper protocol? If someone doesn’t have a tag, does the Beach Patrol a) issue a citation immediately, or b) allow the person in question to purchase a tag? It can’t be both. The CLEAR answer is b…otherwise, the tag checkers wouldn’t carry around tags for sale. Therefor, no citation should have been issued. Therefor (stop me if I’m going too fast) the Lt. and Cpt. and all the rest should never have been involved.
Lastly, you missed the entire point of the article. It wasn’t an anti-beach tag rant. Yes, I believe tags to be unnecessary, but Chris’ family clearly complies and purchases seasonal tags. It’s about the way power tripping fools treat their customers. That’s right, customers. If they, and you, are too arrogant to see it that way, then shame on you.

You will never guess what happened next, the “70″ yr old men at the counter asked “what I thought I was doing?” At which point I explained that my wife would be in to pay for the magazine after she parked the car.
Suprise, the “70″ yr old didnt take this as an acceptable answer and told me I could pay for it know or i couldnt walk out of the store with it.

There’s really no point in writing this article? Just because it won’t stop Chris and his family from vacationing in Avalon doesn’t meant that articles like this don’t have value.
Say what you want about the comments and stories being hearsay. There are too many stories like this out there to all have been made up by mean-spirited people who get their rocks off by torturing 14 year olds.
Any person who has lugged their 100 pounds of beach crap down to the water with, five chairs, bags of toys, a cooler and at least one whining child can relate to the frustration of being harassed by kids barely old enough to drive.
This article isn’t about not want to pay for tags -Chris had them. This article isn’t about not wanting to produce the tags when asked – Chris did so. This article is about unequal treatment and encouraging other stories of injustice from Avalon’s beach nazis.
Sure, it probably won’t keep Chris or his family from visiting Avalon next year. It probably won’t even stop 99% of the people who read it. However, without articles from people like Chris, how is Avalon ever going to know about the poor way its patrons are being treated? Public discourse is the best way to bring injustice to light.
If you can’t see that, than you really are nearsighted.

For those of you who have ever been to Avalon’s beaches, you fully understand the absolutely ridiculous whistle blowing by the lifeguards. We keep you close together, we keep you in at your waist (yes your waist and in most time less), and we honestly do not care about your safety. Want to know why? The answer is simple. That truck that drives up and down the beach. On nearly all other beach patrols in the Jersey shore that truck is to check ocean conditions, how many people are in the water, and to check on the lifeguards and see if they need help, or anything else. In Avalon, that truck cares little about the guards. As a lifeguard in Avalon you quickly learn to keep people in tight and close because of fear of being RIDICULOUSLY punished by the truck. You may get lucky with an embarrassing comment, but most usually a suspension is given. Avalon lifeguards DO NOT CARE about being on top of their game for patron safety. They do it to protect themselves from loss of income and to prevent being literally yelled at like you are 10.
There is good news though. If you are a friend of the Wolfe family. Then, you get a fast track to “Lieutenant” and you can pretty much do what you want. Has any resident or vacationer of Avalon ever wondered why the beach patrol staff is horrible? Look no further than the beach house. The captain Murray Wolfe, has promoted ALL of his children to lieutenant. Also, there are 2 childhood friends of the family that are also lieutenants. All of which are not capable of doing a job well done. Yet no tax payers (and from the looks of those houses you have some pull) seem to ever complain about it. You complain to the lifeguards and we honestly tell you the reason. Go to your city council and complain!
Also, every year in late August Avalon holds the Kerr memorial race. Now, I am no way saying ANYTHING negative towards Kerr. I have heard wonderful stories of how great and kind a man he was from lifeguards and residents alike. Does anybody wonder why Avalon cannot seem to come close to winning a lifeguard race in any other town, yet seems to always win Kerr’s or be close? Does not require much thinking. If you are a member of any surrounding beach patrol, it is an ongoing joke that Kerrs are a joke. Half of the south Jersey shore doesn’t even show up because of this reason. Cheating is rampant and it is ALWAYS disorganized.
If you want Avalon back and have the ability to enjoy your beaches and ocean again, you need to get the Wolfe regime out of control. Your beaches ARE NOT SAFE. Lifeguards DO NOT CARE about your safety, only the security of their jobs. The Avalon beach patrol is a joke and a black mark on the stellar lifeguards up and down the Jersey shore. Next summer when booking your beach trips, think twice about going to Avalon. Do this for both safety and enjoyment.
September 1st, 2010 at 10:02 pm
I’ve only read a few of your feeble minded comments, because I thought I would throw up if I read any more of your insipid drivel. Several things are pretty obvious to anyone who reads your “thoughts” (and in your case I use the term loosely).
First and foremost, take some night courses in basic English composition. You’ll be amazed what happens when you learn little things such as proper grammar and capitalization.
Second, it is apparent that you are another mindless government employee feeding from the public teet. Why else would you be so adamant about defending Avalon?
Finally, do you think you’re slick because you were on the beach that day and “saw it all.” Maybe if you had been minding your own business you would have throw out your empty Funyon bags and Shasta root beer cans instead of leaving them to strangle some poor dolphin. The ugliness of your ignorance is surpassed only by the hideousness of your actions. For shame.

I showed this article to the tagger in question this morning and the response was almost heart breaking. Avalon is a small town and it was not hard to conclude which incident this was. As of this month beach tags have grossed over 1 million dollars for the borough this summer, the tagger in question is greatly responsible for this amount. If you’d like to check the facts on that statement you can walk up to the beach tag booth on 30th street between 10am- 3:30 pm. The responses and statements directed towards this tagger are absolutely absurd and disturbing. I cannot believe that individuals who claiming to be educated, concerned citizens would act this way. The beach patrol does an amazing job protecting the patrons of Avalon and i will continue to support the motives and actions of everyone on the patrol.
September 2nd, 2010 at 6:59 am
Liz in AV & Avalon Local: your movie ticket comparison is so incredibly flawed. We aren’t talking about an exchange of goods taking place in a private business on private property; rather, access to a PUBLIC beach.
The defense of the beach patrol is baffling. The whole ‘they’re just doing their job’ is laughable. If little Miss Attitude had done her job, the scenario would have gone down like this: “Oh, you don’t have tags? You need to buy some before you can go on the beach. Oh wait, your husband has them. Have a nice day.” Instead, a citation is issued for not having tags, by someone who didn’t even witness the incident mind you, because the power tripping officer didn’t like someone’s attitude…even though they, in fact, had tags. Pretty clearly an abuse of power.
Taggers, if the tagger girl was heartbroken reading this story…good. Maybe she’ll grow up and realize that world, and Avalon’s beaches specifically, are not her personal playground, and that absurd behavior will not go unnoticed and unquestioned.

Also, you are required to have a beach tag to go to the beach in avalon. end of story. show your tag, if you dont have one, buy one. Then you wont have trouble and neither will the beach tagger. This is just the way things are, if you dont like it, write a letter to the burough.
i keep my tag right on my bag so the tagger doesnt even need to ask me for it! i just walk on by. All of these problems can easliy be avoided by having a beach tag. Crazy right?
September 2nd, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Also, let’s no forget that they had tags. They got a no tag citation because of a “bad attitude”. At no time was there an opputunity to purchase tags. Unless someone was offered and refused to purchase tags, how could a no tag citation ever be issued?
Lastly, Avalon’s guards rescuing someone last week is nice, but also completely immaterial to this article.

How pathetic these people really are. Who’s life are you protecting buy spending time with a supposed “harasser”. Real good use of your time! Just keep your eyes on the water and protect swimmers….. that’s all you should be doing.
Leave the people who pay your salaries alone!

As far as them checking tags while on the beach, is it that big of a deal? I guess it never crossed your mind that people get to the beach before taggers get to work and people can get on the beach if they have to step away. All you need to do is leave your tag in plain view and they won’t bother you. Pin it to your chair or a towel. I’ve been going to AVL for over 25 years and have never had an issue. I’ve never seen anyone stopped walking down the beach or in the water for not having a tag on them.
I guess your just another one of those people that think that laws, regulations and ordinances that exist for everyones safety, protection and enjoyment do not apply to you. I’m a vacationer, I can do whatever I want!
I look forward to seeing who you turn to next time an unruly group is next to where you always camp on the beach. I guess ABP and the beach taggers are out.
Get over it or go somewhere else, the town doesn’t need you!

Not only are you an elitist ass, you can’t read (Probably why you are a former resident—what happened, you lose your house?)
He had a tag. Period. The snot-nosed kid shot her mouth off. Should have been canned. End of story.
But way to get off point.
Nice to slam the writer, Philly Mag, Philly Post and other columnists, as well as all people not from Avalon. You know what? That includes your MAYOR, as he doesn’t live or work there.
How bout that, genuis?
And nice of you to slam all who rent or patronize hotels (since they don’t own), as well as all who don’t own on the beach (since mid-block owners are slumming it). The hoteliers and real estate companies must just love you.
No wonder idiots like you troll the comments section trying so desperately to kiss ass and be relevant.
Fat, arrogant and lazy is no way to go through life.
Punk.

How dare you insult Chris’ wife (who I know better than you) your comments show how uneducated you are with absolutely no class. His wife did not write the article and is not up for criticisim. I am a home owner in Avalon, are you? I have spent my summers there my entire life, have you? I am a tax payer to Avalon, are you? Any one who can answer yes and is NOT a local (protecting their own) then I am sure you all have a horro beach tag story. Chris’ wife is a highly educated, highly employeed individual who spends her free time volunteering in the community. Yuri, you are nothing but a low class uneducated ass, get a life.

I hope Chris does a follow up to this story. It seems to have pissed off the kool-aid drinking suppports of the ABP.

If you are going to quote one of the greatest comedies of all time (Animal House), at least get it right. Dean Wormer says, “Fat, drunk, and stupid are no way to go through life, son.” One of my favorites of all time by the way.
But let me just take a minute to address your points, because what better place than to hide behind the security of my computer. If this were really a public debate, it wouldn’t be as fun, would it? The truth would have to come out.
1. I never had the privilege of working on the ABP, and sort of regret it.
2. I am a former resident because I grew up there, and moved on to bigger cities and different opportunities that a small town which relies on very respected (by locals) seasonal population doesn’t provide.
3. He had a tag, or his wife had the tag. Or they did, but weren’t in plan view. Or the kids were running and they had the tags. It’s a game of telephone we all read, and sometimes when you play that game facts get misconstrued. What happened has two sides, and if that 14 yr old tagger had anything besides her facebook profile as a pulpit I’m sure we’d hear a different side.
4. I didn’t slam the Philadelphia Mag. I don’t live in the tri state area, but I still read it monthly. I love it, I love Big Daddy Graham, and occasionally I love to hear Mike Missy spin why his ESPN radio station with FM/AM locations on your radio dial is better than my beloved WIP. And I never slammed anyone from not from Avalon. That would be just silly.
5. I am pretty sure the town’s mayor lives in Avalon, but again I’m not the ‘genius.’
6. Lastly, my suggestion to move to the bay was in fact for the benefit of those who patronize hotels and local businesses. He’d have the best of both worlds, his own ocean in his backyard, and can still frequent the island’s fantastic restaurants and shops! And those who rent, stay in the hotels, and buy homes won’t have to deal with the fracas of some (I’ll use your term here) elisist, because he wasn’t given special beach pass privileges.
Think about that for a minute. You and your family are on the way to enjoy a day at the beach, and all you see are lifeguards, 14 year old girls, and an over 40 year old man yelling about how he’s been disrespected by these people because he didn’t follow the rules.
Furthermore, I think the outcome speaks for itself. If he was so sure of his case, of his ‘side’ why wouldn’t you wait for the hearing? He was already down there. He had a chance to put these wild ABP members in their place! A real town hearing! JUSTICE! But, nah. He didn’t have time, instead he banged out ‘his side of the story’ on his blackberry as he was leaving the island. Silly, silly, stuff.

You conceited elitist bigot. HOW DARE YOU!?!? Let’s get a few things straight, dear. I don’t want or need to own some dump in Avalon. I have a double wide on Matthew Avenue in Rio Grande. Ever hear of the place?
As far as Chris’ wife Heather is concerned, I have known her since we went to O’hara together. I think I’ve known her for quite a while, thanks much.
Finally, what the hell is a “highly

Didn’t mean to leave you hanging, there. Some jackass just cut me off on Route 9 while I tried to type this. Must be another jackass Avalonianiter rushing to get to that cesspool.
As I started to ask, what the hell is a “highly employeed individual?” Is that an Avalon thing.
You are mean-spirited, capricious, and arbitrary. For shame. For shame.
September 2nd, 2010 at 11:52 pm
Authority figures aren’t nice to you? Too many laws? Feel violated? If you walk around thinking rules are for other people, you are going to have problems here. No one cares who you are, what you own, who you know. No one cares what you are paying to be here. So did the person before you and so will the person after you. It’s a given. Moreover, don’t tell me you are never coming back. PROMISE ME. Go one island south and act as uncivilized as you want. Go one island north where you can drown tagless. We like the island buttoned up. There are fewer and fewer places where you can go and not worry about being thumped over the head and robbed. There isn’t much that goes unnoticed. We take pride in that.
You need a tag. It’s the law. It’s made in the form of a pin so you may easily attach it to your garment. I can see I need to start going to court. I’m missing out on all the free amusement. People justifying why they became unhinged on a 14 year old. And you’re a parent? Buck up..

You’re a retard. They had tags. Read the article. Pig.

You are a government kiss-ass, which explains your moronic and childish comments. Also, being a wannabe-snob just is so pathetic. You probably have never even owned in Avalon, but this forum gves you that dream, if for a second.
“Owners are permitted to have grills on the deck for their own use.” How dumb are you? Read the ordinance.
Gas grills onm decks are illeagal. Period. Even for malcontents like you. But that law is selectively, and unconstitutionally, enforced. Which is why Avalon’s reputuation is getting torched by the minute.
I’d say stick with facts, but, alas, I remembered an old adage: You can’t win an argument with a fool.

Let’s all remember that the young lady was doing her job as per her training and instructions from superiors.
Let’s remember, this is just another revenue making business or taxation without representation for the local government of Avalon, NJ.
Let’s remember, AVALON is a great town, it is only the CORRURTION of the Local government and employees as well as their HATRED of the visitors who call the town their 2nd home that cause these problems.
Let’s remember, 2 beach badges were produced to the so-called superiors and yet that fraudulently wrote a citation. They should be fined for filing a false statement to the local court system.
FREEDOM of speech applies to both parties here. No threats were made on either side, it appears they had an argument/debate. The true problem resides in the fraudulent Citation of not producing a beach badge, when two badges were produce. The 2nd part to this problem is that there is no accountability for perjury. If you provide a false statement to any law enforcement or acting law enforcement, you can be and/or will be fined by the governing courts if you are caught. However, it appears in AVALON that the local Law Enforcement and/or acting law enforcement is permitted to falsify statements to the courts in their writing of false citations with absolutely no fear of being accountable for their lies. No-one should be above the law, especially those who are supposed to be enforcing it.
See the real crime!

Very familiar with Rio Grande which makes me believe you are a local. As for your facts, Chris’ wife is not named Heather and she did not go to O’Hara. You are lost and confused and should not be texting while driving, against the law in NJ. That is why there are so many fatal accidents on Route 9 because of inconsiderate people like you.
September 3rd, 2010 at 1:36 pm
You want the best example of selective enforcement and what to do about it? I walked on the beach and showed my tag, as I always do, and was met with a sneer and disrepectful attitude. Inexcusable, but I blew it off. But then I saw a wedding party on the beach for pictures. You think they had tags?
We all know the answer. And while I dare not ask the bride/groom about it, there was a distinct absence of tags on their tuxedos and gowns.
All for one and one for all. Except in Avalon, where favoritism and arrogance rule the day.
I have been a seasonal renter for 16 years. After reading this, and being continually disgusted, I just chose to NOT renew my lease. This Labor Day, I will find a place in Stone Harbor for 2011. Vote with your voice—and your pocketbook.
$42,000 out of Avalon’s pockets. Not to mention not patronizing restaurants and stores. All because of an out of control government and Beach Patrol.
How that for putting my money where my mouth is?

1. Certain members of the ABP are certified Class 1 Law enforment officers who go through training and obtain the legal right to issue citations in the State of New Jersey.
2. If you admit that you walked on to the beach with out a tag you can be issued a ticket.
3. Some one has way to much time on their hands
4. Hogan doesnt work for the ABP anymore
5. Its a shame the “writer” got so flustered from a 14 year old girl….sounds like you have some confidence issues as well as possible masculinity problems.

The beach patrol is a disgrace. Murry should be fired. I’ve been surfing and have the lifeguards call everyone one out of the water to check for beach tags. No ball playing near the water or in the water, lifeguards that are well under qualified, and preteen girls acting like they own you.
It seems like both the beach patrol and police try to scare you rather than cater to and help you. We gotta get our act together.

My case was not heard until almost 4PM in the afternoon (last case of the day) . I ultimately won the case (on a technicality), but wasted an entire day of my life in the process. I write this story today, because my friend Smelly is going to court tomorrow in Avalon, NJ for Surfing on the beach in Avalon, NJ. Good Luck Smelly, I hope that you are able to prevail!!!
