Andre Agassi to Fund Philly Charter School

Former tennis star and Olympic gold medalist teams with L.A. investors to churn profit, fund charter schools

Tennis superstar Andre Agassi and a group of investors—which includes Citibank, Intel Capital and former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan—have an interesting project. Agassi, who has spent a decade working to raise money and operate Agassi Prep in Las Vegas, is hoping to turn a profit while building and funding charter schools in urban communities across America. First stop: Philadelphia. He and his partners will finance the campus of the Knowledge is Power Program’s Philadelphia Elementary Academy at 12th and Vine streets (which the LA Times hilariously refers to as North Philly). The Scoop thinks this decision seems smarter than the Bon Jovi wig, Andre. [LA Times]
