Devon Fitness Owner Arrested For Attempted Murder

Valium, wine and a Luger apparently not a good combination

Last Friday, Schuylkill Township police arrested 46-year-old John McCaffrey, co-owner of the high-end Main Line gym Devon Fitness, after an early morning shooting at his home. McCaffrey has been charged with, among other things, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of an instrument of crime with intent to employ it. He’s currently sitting in Chester County Jail awaiting a hearing tomorrow to modify his bail from the current amount, $750,000.

According to an earlier report, which did not connect McCaffrey to his gym, police arrived at McCaffrey’s home to find the bloody male victim in McCaffrey’s arms. That report indicated that McCaffrey told police that he had consumed several glasses of wine in addition to Dilaudid and Valium throughout the course of the evening. As for the shooting itself, McCaffrey reportedly told police that he didn’t know what had happened. Police recovered a Luger pistol.

Police also interviewed an unidentified woman at the scene, who said she was asleep in the house at the time of the shooting. The phone at McCaffrey’s address is registered to Lisa Hoekstra, his partner at Devon. No word on if Hoekstra was the woman that police interviewed. The receptionist at the club says Hoekstra is unavailable for comment.

The victim was admitted to Paoli Hospital. His condition is unavailable.

UPDATE: The attempted murder charge has been withdrawn, though all other charges remain. The formal arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th.
