Amtrak riders have long been able to enjoy cans of carbonated beverages whilst traveling via railroad. The cans of soda set riders back $2 a piece. But, here’s the thing: the U.S. Treasury has been spending $3.40 on each soda. Cheeseburgers on the rail cost $9.50, but Amtrak is spending $16.50 on them. The price differential has made it so that Amtrak has lost $833 million of taxpayers money on soda and cheeseburgers over the course of the last decade. [Washington Examiner]
